September 22nd, 2009 — Stamp Collecting, stamp collection, stamp collector
With the wide availability of different stamps from all over the world, there is an enormous selection from you to take from when it comes to buying postage stamps online. The following tips should help you when it comes to expanding your stamp hobby by purchasing and even selling your postage stamps online.
- Choosing recent stamps when you buy postage stamps online tends to make it easier for you to get your hobby started. This is because more recent stamps are generally more readily available as well as less expensive, and they can also generally still be found in high quality condition as well.
- You are going to want to decide when buying postage stamps online if you are interested in collecting cancelled stamps or mint stamps. Mint stamps are pristine stamps that have never been used, and they are generally capable of earning you more money when you sell them. Cancelled stamps on the other hand have been used and have been stamped already by the post office have already served their purpose, which is something that some collectors are going to prefer.
- When you buy postage stamps online, you are only going to want to buy a complete stamp. If you find that one particular stamp is proving to be difficult to find, then you are going to risk having to buy another complete set later on in order to get the single rare stamp that you are looking for.
- You should be aiming to focus on one particular type of stamps when you are buying postage stamps online. Some collectors begin their collections by buying only a specific type of stamp, such as stamps that feature planes or birds. Other collectors decide to find stamps that come from a specific country or a specific state. Some collectors on the other hand only collect stamps that come from a particular time period.
Regardless of whatever types of stamps you decide that you want to collect, it is important that you know that stamp collecting should be about enjoyment first and foremost. You should enjoy collecting your stamps rather than thinking purely about making any money on this particular hobby. Stamp collecting can certainly be profitable, but it should be enjoyable first and foremost and only profitable after the fact. When it comes to buying postage stamps online, you should focus on finding the stamps that you enjoy first and foremost, before you focus on the stamps that will earn you a serious profit. This is going to ensure that you always get enjoyment out of the hobby, even if it does not always turn a profit for you.

September 20th, 2009 — European Stamps, Germany Stamps, Third Reich Stamps
When it comes to collecting stamps that were produced during the second world war, many collectors gravitate towards what are known as “Third Reich Stamps.” These are stamps that were produced in Germany from a period between 1933 and 1945, when the Third Reich was in power in that country. If you are interested in collecting war memorabilia, or you are just looking for rare stamps to collect, these are certainly valuable in many cases.
To determine whether or not you have an authentic Third Reich stamp on your hands, there are a few things that you should pay attention to.
1. The Colors
Most Third Reich stamps are either green, red or brown. The backgrounds of the stamps will have the most color, while the designs are usually white or simply not colored at all. This creates a contrast effect and provides a backdrop for the artwork that is used. Many other countries used the opposite effect, where the background of the stamp was pale in color and the designs featured color, but Third Reich Stamps are usually different.
2. The Designs
This is where there is a lot of variation. Some Third Reich stamps will feature Hitler or prominent people from the Third Reich, while others will have sometimes strange designs that depict Egyptian figures. Other designs from this time period also feature soldiers, and as the country deteriorated into war, symbols such as the swastika were used in greater numbers. You can actually track the war through the stamps that were issued, and see where the country was headed during this time.
3. The Commemoration
Many Third Reich Stamps were issued in commemoration of certain events and these are probably the most popular. They will typically contain the anniversary of a date that was important to leaders within the Third Reich, or of specific victories. These are typically the kinds of stamps that are collected by those that have a specific interest in the war with Germany during this time.
If you find a Third Reich stamp and you are wondering whether or not it is legitimate, pay attention to the colors that were used and rely on the above tips to help you determine whether or not it is authentic. Always look for stamps that are in good condition, have never been used, or still contain the original adhesive. These are the most valuable, in addition to the ones with specific dates.
You may also want to get an appraisal or have an expert examine a Third Reich stamp before you buy it. There are counterfeit stamps running around, and you may end up wasting your money if you are not careful and go through the authentication process. If you are buying a stamp at auction, the organizers or seller will usually provide you with additional information about the history of the stamp as well as its value. You can use these figures to help you determine whether or not this is a stamp that should be added to your collection.

September 18th, 2009 — Rare Stamps, US Postage Stamps, United States Stamps
United States stamps are fun to collect and you will have many different varieties from which to choose. If you are looking for a hobby for your kids, or you are just interested in US history, these stamps are a great link to our past and a valuable way to learn more about this country. If you want to collect United States stamps, there are a few things to remember. These tips will help you build up a very valuable collection.
1. Consider the Era
Stamps have been produced in America from the colonial period and there are numerous stamps from this time period that can still be found today. Colonial United States stamps are rare finds indeed, as are Confederate stamps. Whether you are interested in collecting for a specific year, or you just need to know which ones to look for, the older the better is true in the majority of cases. Keep your eyes open, you never know what you may find.
2. Think outside the book
There are many valuable United States stamps that were never actually used as stamps. These back of the book stamps, such as Duck Stamps are still quite rare and many of them will bring in thousands of dollars at auction. Although it is always nice to find stamps that were meant for circulation, you should also consider collecting at least a few back of book stamps as well.
3. Special Events Matter
Stamps that are designed to commemorate special events are always quite valuable. For example, the first flight United States stamps are highly sought after and commemorate the Wright Brothers and their contributions to the aviation industry. There are also United States stamps that were printed in honor of certain presidents as well as other public figures and important events that occurred throughout the history of this country. Learning about these stamps can be quite an education.
4. Condition Matters
By far the most valuable United States stamps are the ones that are in pristine condition and were never actually circulated. However, these are rare and may be priced out of reach of the average collector. You can still find some great stamps however if you keep your eyes open. In fact, in many cases, you can get a collection or lot of stamps at auction and discover a rare find right inside.
5. Errors Aren’t a Bad Thing
Although you would think that a United States stamp that was printed poorly or had an error would be worthless, the opposite is actually quite true. There is a huge market for oddity stamps, stamps with errors on them and what collectors refer to as “freaks.” Keep an eye out for stamps that may not look just right – you may have a gold mine on your hands.
FDCs are also very popular stamps and there are literally thousands of United States stamps that are considered to be collectible. Start building your collection today and see what rare finds you can come across.

September 18th, 2009 — Rare Stamps, Stamp Collecting, US Postage Stamps
When it comes to finding stamps of great value, US postage stamps are usually the most popular. In fact, many of these stamps may be worth more than $100k, and frequently will go well above that. When you are shopping for collectible US postage stamps, it helps to know what to look for so that you can make a good purchase. Here are some signs that you have a winner on your hands.
1. The gum is still intact.
For stamps made after the last part of the 19th century, there should be gum attached to the back. Adhesives were introduced in US postage stamps during this time period and if you can find one that still has the original gum, that is quite a feat indeed. This can make a difference of several thousand dollars in terms of overall value.
2. The stamp was never used.
While some highly collectible US postage stamps may still have value if they are used, you should always look for stamps that are still in their original books, or were never actually used. If you can find uncirculated US postage stamps, they are worth even more money.
3. The overall condition is very good.
Used or not, the US postage stamp you are trying to collect should be in the best possible condition. Stay away from stamps that are torn, missing pieces or in general bad condition. It is better to have a postmark on one than it is to have half a stamp. Always try to buy the stamps that are in the best condition first since they will generally be worth much more money.
4. The hinge is still intact.
The small piece of paper that was used to connect US postage stamps together is known as a hinge. If you can find a stamp that still has its hinge, it is generally worth more money than those that don’t. However, the hinge should be firmly attached and not hanging lose. If that occurs, the value will go down.
5. The historical figure depicted on the stamp.
This can be a big determiner in the overall value of a US postage stamp. For example, stamps depicting famous presidents such as Abraham Lincoln are generally more valuable. The same is true for famous founding fathers, like Benjamin Franklin, or even present day celebrities.
6. The stamp has a mistake.
This is actually a good thing, as long as it occurred when the stamp was manufactured. Error stamps are actually worth quite a bit of money and many collectors will limit their collections to only these odd creations. If you find a stamp that just looks a little wrong, do a little research on it. It may be a very valuable US postage stamp.
Whenever you are collecting US postage stamps, the overall condition should be your guide. While damaged stamps may be cheaper to collect, they just don’t have the same value as those that are in perfect shape.

September 12th, 2009 — Rare Stamps, US Stamps, Z Grill
Collecting stamps from around the world is a popular hobby for many, but there are also many valuable stamps that are hard to find. US Stamps in particular can be very rare, and there are quite a few that collectors would give their eye teeth for. Here is a quick guide to most collectible US stamps that are currently available.
1. US Franklin Z Grill – 1867 US Stamp
This one may be hard for the average collector to find since only two were ever made. While all Z Grills are considered to be collectible, these two stamps are by far the most valuable. One recently sold at auction for just under $1 million.
2. Hawaiian Missionary Stamps – 1851 US Stamp
The first stamps that were issued by what would later become the state of Hawaii are considered to be incredibly rare and will fetch upwards of $225k at auction. The first series were missionary stamps. They got this name from the multitude of American missionaries that were stationed in the islands during that time period. These were the same stamps that they used to write home and report on their efforts at spreading the gospel.
3. Abraham Lincoln – 1867 US Stamp
This is a very rare stamp indeed, but you may be able to find one since there are least more than two in existence. It features the Z Grill and is considered to be collectible due to the Civil War that was raging at the time and the history behind the stamp. If you are lucky enough to come across one of these, it can easily sell for more than $200k if it is in good condition.
4. Shield, Eagle and Flags – 1869 US Stamp
This stamp is so valuable that even one that no longer has gum on the back can still be worth more than $3500 if the rest of the stamp is in good condition. These are a little easier to come by for the average collector. Keep your eyes open however for one that is both unhinged and has gum since this can be worth more than $200k.
5. The Declaration of Independence – 1869 US Stamp
One of these used will sell more for more than $800, but if you can find one that is still intact, it can be worth a lot more. Many of these stamps, in mint condition, will sell at auction for more than $200k. Again, this is an easier stamp to find since more of them were issued.
US Stamps offer more than just a valuable collectible. Each one has a rich history tied to it that links us to our past. If you are just starting your collection, it is fun to see just how many rare stamps you can come across, and you never know just what treasures you may find. This is a great hobby for kids, and you can teach them a lot about the United States through these rare and valuable stamps.

September 7th, 2009 — Antique Postage Stamps, Old Postage Stamps, Rare Stamps, Stamp Collecting
When it comes to collecting stamps, most collectors dream of being able to find the perfect antique postage stamps. By far, these are usually the ones that are the most valuable and in many cases, they are the most visually interesting. If you are ready to get serious about collecting antique postage stamps, there are a few things you need to know to make sure you get started off on the right foot.
When you think about antique postage stamps, you may automatically start thinking about stamps that are least a hundred years old or so. However, there are many stamps that are considered to be antiques, and they are just 30 years old. As an example, the postal service started issuing non-denominational stamps during the 1970’s and many of these are considered to be incredibly valuable today.
There is also more to an antique postage stamp than the price it can fetch at auction. Many of these stamps have their own story to tell and they are great additions to any collection. For example, the stamps made during the French revolution are highly collectible, but they also illustrate the struggle that was going on during that time period. Look beyond the value of a stamp that you can find in a book and start focusing on the intangible value it may have.
If you are trying to find antique postage stamps, the best place to start looking is at garage sales, second hand stores and collector stores. These are the best places to find hidden deals. In fact, since stamp collecting has become so popular online, you’ll be able to find many different antique postage stamps that are available right online. This is a great option for those that live in an area where stamp collecting may not be a common hobby.
Keep in mind that many antique postage stamps will have seen better days, but it is possible to get a great deal every now and again. Try to find unused antique postage stamps if at all possible, and keep an eye on the overall condition of a stamp before you buy it. A ripped stamp will not be as valuable as one that is in mint condition, unless it is a highly collectible item.
If you are stuck as to which antique postage stamps you should be looking for, we recommend subscribing to a stamp collecting news paper, or browsing through online auction sites. These are gold mines of information and will help prepare you to spot a great deal when you see it.
For those that are completely new to stamp collecting, the thrill of the hunt is what interests so many in antique postage stamps. You never know what you may find and the next stamp you come across may be worth several thousand dollars – or more. You can have a lot of fun collecting antique postage stamps and it is a great hobby to share with children, especially if you involve them in the search.
