Baseball Memorabilia

Sports Memorabilia -> Autographs – Original -> Baseball – MLB

Out of all of the sports collectibles, when it comes to the ones that resonate the deepest with collectors, baseball memorabilia is at the top of the list. This is an emotional game, and there are thousands of different things that you can collect. Whether it’s a vintage card from Mickey Mantle, a bobble head of Cal Ripkin, Jr, or a signed card from your favorite player, baseball memorabilia is valuable in many different ways. Let’s take a look at some of the hottest baseball memorabilia that is currently available.

1. Autographed Baseball Cards

These are definitely a fan favorite and whether you remember your collection as a kid, or you are still actively collecting, this type of baseball memorabilia is incredibly popular. In fact, many of these cards can sell for thousands of dollars at auction. When you’re shopping for this type of memorabilia, it is important to get it authenticated before you actually buy, since fakes are common. However, with care, you can easily get a great card to add to your personal collection.

2. Jerseys and Gloves

These items rank right up there with cards when it comes to the most popular forms of baseball memorabilia. Ideally, you should be looking for originals, and it’s even better if they are autographed. However, if your budget is a little on the small side, you can still get an nice commemorative jersey or glove that is a licensed reproduction. Just make sure that you are dealing with a retailer that has been approved by the MLB to ensure that you are getting the best merchandise.

3. Bobble Head Dolls

This is another incredibly popular type of baseball memorabilia and once again, there are a few that will sell for thousands at auction. You’ll want to look for older bobble head dolls that represent famous players, or ones that are specifically commemorating an event, such as a the World Series. While many of these have emotional value only, they still make for a great display item and a wonderful conversation piece.

4. Bats and Signed Balls

You may be able to get your very own baseball memorabilia if you show up at a game and ask your favorite player to give you an autograph. Try to get them to sign a bat or a ball. In most cases, players will stay after a game in order to give the fans a few minutes for autograph signings. Don’t hound the players, but depending on their level of friendliness, most should be willing to oblige you.

Baseball memorabilia is one of the collectibles out there that is a lot of fun to find and it’s easy to start building your own personal collection. If you love this game, and you’re not yet collecting memorabilia, you are missing out on a great chance to express your love of this game and get some valuable collectibles that you can pass on to your children and grandchildren down the road. This is a great family activity and one that kids really enjoy.

Lance Armstrong

h4>Sports-Memorabilia -> Sports-Collectibles -> Fan-Apparel-and-Souvenirs

Lance ArmstrongLance Armstrong is one of today’s most well-known names, both in professional cycling and professional sports in general. Born in 1971, he went on to win the Tour de France 7 years in a row from 1999 to 2005, a record-breaking run that guaranteed him a place in sports history. What makes his triumphs even more impressive was that he managed them after suffering from cancer that the doctors believed would likely end his life. He underwent grueling treatments including chemotherapy and surgery, however, and went on to make his name in the world of sports. He’s won numerous awards, been named Athlete of the Year, Sportsman of the Year, Best Male Athlete and other among numerous titles.

During his career, Lance Armstrong faced allegations of drug use. He was accused of using performance enhancing drugs, steroids among them, but the allegations never proved true. In fact, Armstrong viewed the charges as ridiculous, stating that he was probably the most tested athlete in the world. Due to his previous battles with cancer, his physical testing was much more detailed that many other athletes to ensure that he was well enough to compete, and as a constant check to make sure the testicular cancer which had spread to his lungs and brain and nearly cost him his life, wasn’t trying to return.

After his retirement in 2005, he dedicated himself to the Lance Armstrong Foundation, a foundation he created that supports those suffering from cancer. He also helped found Athletes for Hope, an organization that helps and encourages professional athletes to get involved in charities, and encourages others to volunteer their time and efforts toward charitable causes. He cofounded this venture along with other top athletes like Tennis pro Andre Agassi, legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, racing star Jeff Gordon, pro skater Tony Hawk, baseball player Cal Ripkin, and many other worldwide sports stars.

Lance Armstrong has also participated in other sports since his retirement. He’s driven the pace car in the Indianapolis 500, has competed in two New York City Marathons, in 2006 and 2007. In 2006, a camera followed him the entire time, and he raised over half a million dollars for his foundation through his Livestrong campaign. These products are sold under his name with the Livestrong logo, with the profits going to his foundation to support cancer victims. While he had difficulties in 2006, he finished in the top 250 in 2007 and went on to finish in the top 500 in the 2008 Boston Marathon.

Lance Armstrong could be set to repopularize competitive cycling, because he recently announced that he will compete again in 2009 in an amazing sports comeback. Collectible items will also become more valuable, especially if he dominates the 2009 racing season as he did during the last 7 years of his professional life. Some of the most popular items found on eBay include Tour de France posters bearing his autograph, autographed copies of his books and Livestrong gear that he’s personally worn during cycling competitions or signed.

Baseball Pennants

Sports Memorabilia -> Vintage-Sports Memorabilia -> Pennants-Flags

Baseball PennantsCollecting baseball pennants can be a fun hobby for a sports memorabilia fan, or a fan of a particular baseball team. A collector can choose to collect pennants that were made during a certain year, a certain era, or pennants spanning the entire history of one team. The variety in pennants in colors, materials and designs is so that any collection is bright and varied, and livens up any room in which it’s displayed.

Baseball cards stand as the leader among baseball collectibles, which causes many people to overlook things like baseball pennants, which are just as collectible and can be quite valuable. In fact, as far as an investment goes, pennants hold their value steady more than cards, which fluctuate based on a number of factors. While it’s unlikely that you’ll find baseball pennants that are worth as much as the top value baseball cards, you’ll have a more steady investment and a great-looking item to enjoy.

Baseball pennants are larger than baseball cards, and more easy and satisfying to display because of that, especially for fans of one team. While they take up more room, the space they occupy is typically on the wall, rather than in albums or boxes like cards, so they’re great for people with limited storage space. They serve as decoration as much as simply a collectible display, and are easy to theme a baseball room around, or feature prominently in a room filled with memorabilia from other sports besides baseball.

Thrift stores, yard sales and flea markets are a good place to browse for baseball pennants. Many people acquire them and never realize that they might have value beyond that of a souvenir, so it’s not unusual to find a true vintage pennant in one of these relatively cheap ways! Some older pennants can even be purchased through Major League Baseball and its affiliates, so it pays to check the official sources. And of course you can purchase new ones there, too.

Online auctions like eBay are a great way to find baseball pennants. While you might not be able to find the exact year a pennant was made when you’re purchasing through yard sales and auctions, this shouldn’t deter you from getting a pennant that you love. You can always research it later to try to find the year, if you’re interested in the history of the pennant.

When looking at baseball pennants, especially online, make sure you ask what material the pennant is made from, as this should affect the price and the value. (Also look into purchasing inexpensive pennant protectors so you can display your treasures without worry.) Felt pennants are the least expensive, and the more easily damaged ones, while wool pennants command higher prices and make a better investment. The earliest pennants from the 1940s will probably cost you more than those made later, but you may be able to find a great vintage pennant for much less than you think, especially if the current owner doesn’t realize its potential value.

Mickey Mantle

Sports -> Baseball Memorabilia

Mickey Mantle

When asked to list some of baseball’s greatest players, many people would list Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig and Ty Cobb, but no list would be complete without Mickey Mantle. The Oklahoma native was born to a father who was already a huge baseball fan and actually named his son after Mickey Cochrane, a Hall of Fame catcher in the sport.

Mickey Mantle was an athlete through high school and college, and because of his college football career he developed osteomyelitis, a potentially fatal condition that had only recently been researched enough to find that penicillin could stop its progress. The disease was a crippling disease that could have cost him his leg, if not for proper, quick treatment. Because of this condition he couldn’t serve in the military and some baseball fans looked down on him for not serving in the Korean War instead of playing baseball professionally, as he did.

He was spotted by a Yankees scout when he was just in high school. The scout came back on the day Mantle graduated high school and signed him to the minor league team. He played for the Yankees in 1951 in his first World Series game, then replaced Jo DiMaggio in 1952 after his retirement. Mickey Mantle held the record for the most runs scored and the most runs batted in during the World Series, as well as the most World Series home runs.

Mickey Mantle also was known for hitting the longest home runs, with some estimated at having traveled between 550 and 650 feet. Though Ruth, DiMaggio and two other ball players had been paid more during their careers, in 1961 Mantle became the highest paid active player, with a contract for $75,000.

Mickey Mantle often battled injury during his career, with knee problems and frequent pain. He hit his last home run in 1968 and retired in 1969. He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1974, and the Yankees retired #7 in his honor. Mantle admitted alcoholism late in life and underwent treatment at the Betty Ford Clinic in 1994. In 1995 after the bombing of the Oklahoma City Federal building he worked to raise money for the victims and their families. Soon after, he received a liver transplant to replace the one ravaged by alcoholism and hepatitis. This caused controversy because of how quickly and easily he received an organ when others had been on a waiting list for months and years.

He also created the Mickey Mantle foundation to raise awareness about the need for organ donation and to help families struggling while waiting for an organ for a loved one. Despite the transplant, he died about two months later because the liver cancer had spread before the transplant.
Mickey Mantle memorabilia can be found in shops dedicated to sports memorabilia or in online auctions, where a huge variety is available. There is usually a lot of competition for these items, so be sure to research what’s most valuable at the time before placing your maximum bid.
