How to Buy Sports Memorabilia

sportsLearning how to buy sports memorabilia and collect sports memorabilia is something that can be both profitable and enjoyable at the same time. Here are some tips, some definitions and some examples that are going to help you to better understand the entire process for learning how to buy sports memorabilia and enjoy sports memorabilia in a collection.

What are officially licensed products?

These are products that have come to be because a professional athletic association has granted permission to a company to display a team logo, name or trademark on a product. An item that is officially licensed will typically have a tag or a sticker that indicates that the item has been officially licensed by a professional athletic association such as the NHL, NASCAR, NFL, NCAA, MLB or NBA for example.

What are limited editions?

When you buy sports memorabilia that is noted as being a limited edition collectible, what this means is that there are only a certain number of that item that were produced or that were autographed. There are typically going to be two different numbers that are displayed on such a collectible, one which is high and one which is low. The high number is indicating the total number of limited edition items that were produced and the lower number is indicating what number yours is out of the total.

With limited editions, the only way that the number is going to be the same in both numbers is if you have received the last limited edition item out of the total number of items that was produced. Most of these limited edition items are going to come with what is known as a certificate of authenticity, which is important even if the item is not actually autographed because what it is doing is letting you know that the item is licensed, limited edition and authentic, and this is something that you should be looking for when you buy sports memorabilia.

When you have the certified signature from a professional athlete on your collectible sports memorabilia, then what you have is a limited edition autographed piece of sports memorabilia. These signatures can appear on baseball cards, pictures, jerseys, balls and any other piece of memorabilia or equipment. The signature absolutely must be certified in order for the memorabilia to be worth anything, so when you buy sports memorabilia, make sure that you are getting the piece verified before you purchase it in order to verify its authenticity.

There are a lot of things that go into how rare or how limited edition an item is including the popularity or talent of the particular athlete, the number of items available to the public, if there is a hologram on the item and the condition of the item, though there are many other criteria as well.

Richard Petty

Sports Memorabilia -> Autographs-Original -> Racing-Nascar

Richard Petty

Richard Petty is a NASCAR driving legend. Known as “The King,” he was one of the most fan-friendly sports figures in the history of racing or any sport, always willing to sign autographs and engage with the fans for as long as they remained after each event. He holds the distinction of winning the NASCAR championship 7 times along with only one other racer, fellow racing legend Dale Earnhardt.

Richard Petty won a career total of 200 races, and few will argue with the claim that he’s the greatest NASCAR driver in history. Racing was in his blood from birth, it seemed, because his father, won the very first Daytona 500 (of which Richard would win 7) in 1959, and was a 3-time NASCAR championship winner. His son, Kyle, is a NASCAR driver, too. His grandson, Adam, died in 2000 while racing.

Richard Petty won his first Daytona 500 in 1964 and his second in 1966, making him the first NASCAR driver to win it twice. He became a drag racer in 1965, while he boycotted the Daytona 500 due to their ban of a certain type of engine. During a crash in Georgia that year, 7 people were injured and an 8-year-old boy in the crowd was killed.

In 1967, back to regular NASCAR driving, Richard Petty won over half of the races he competed in, earning him the nickname “King Richard.” In 1969, Petty switched from Plymouths to Ford, but then went back to driving a Plymouth in 1970 because of the look of the Plymouth Superbird. He won his last NASCAR championship, his 7th, in 1979, after not winning a single race in 1978, in part because he couldn’t seem to “break in” the Dodge he drove.

Richard Petty announced his pending retirement in 1991, stating that after the 1992 season he would retire. He went on a year-long tour around the country, meeting with fans and enjoying his celebrity. His last race was Jeff Gordon’s first career start.

In 1993, Richard Petty crawled back into a race car, driving several laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and then donating the car to the track’s museum. In 2003 he drove a solo lap to commemorate his 7 Winston Cups at the Homestead Miami Speedway. And in 2007, he drove a Daytona car during the pace laps at the Pepsi 400. Petty was as famous for the crashes he survived as he was the races he won, and was famous for his willingness to talk to fans and stand sometimes for hours to be sure none were missed if they were waiting to get his autograph or talk to him.
Richard Petty autographs aren’t hard to come by because of his career-long willingness to sign them. Just be sure to compare any you find in an online auction or shop with known examples of his signature for authenticity. You can find jackets, posters, programs, replicas of his cars and tons of other items at large marketplaces like eBay.

Nascar Collectibles

Sports Memorabilia -> Autographs – Original -> Racing – NASCAR

One of the nation’s favorite sports is racing, and Nascar is bigger than ever. If you’re a fan of Nascar, or you are just looking for a fun collectible, there are numerous different options available. Many of these are very valuable, especially for certain drivers, and the sport is growing all the time. Let’s take a look at the different types of Nascar collectibles that are currently available.

Posters

These are very popular Nascar collectibles, but they are only valuable if they are signed. You can find original authentic autographs if you are a private collector, or if you just want something that commemorates a certain event or a favorite driver, you can find posters with reprinted autographs. The most popular subjects for posters are Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt, but new stars are always on the rise.

Lithographs

These are far more valuable than posters and many of these Nascar collectibles are very detailed and worth quite a lot of money. Look for limited edition lithographs that are personally signed by a driver if you need a collectible that is worth a lot of money. If you’re on a budget, there are mass production lithographs available that are much more economical, but their overall collectible value is somewhat less than the ones with the real autographs.

Trading Cards

These are a popular Nascar collectible with children and in many areas they are heavily traded. A lot of people like to take the card with their favorite driver on it to the track in hopes of getting it autographed. If you can’t make it to the track however, you can still find them for sale. One of the best places to look is at online auction sites, where you can get a wide variety of different cards and drivers.

Photos

These have perhaps the most emotional value for Nascar collectibles, especially if you can get a picture taken with your favorite driver. If you do, make sure to get them to autograph it for you. You can do this by contacting their team once the photo is printed and send it off for an autograph. Most drivers will be more than willing to autograph it for you. Standard issue photos are also quite popular and once again, you’ll want to get them autographed if you can.

Hats and Apparel

While these are classified as Nascar collectibles, they really fall more into the memorabilia category, but to fans, that doesn’t make them any less valuable. You can find these for sale in most department or sporting goods stores. Every once in awhile you can also find limited edition apparel with a signature of your favorite driver on it.

Figurines and Die Cast Cars

Last but not least, die cast cars and figures are also very popular Nascar collectibles. You can find these in most stores but if you buy one, it’s best to leave it in the original packaging to retain its value, especially if you plan on selling it for a profit in the future.

Types of Sporting Memorabilia

sportautographIf you are trying to get into sporting memorabilia and would like a good idea of what types of memorabilia are out there, keep reading. Here you are going to find a basic look at what types of sporting memorabilia are out there so that you can go about finding the right pieces for your own personal collection.

With the assistance of the internet, sports all over the world have become increasingly popular. As a result, people are beginning to collect more and more sporting memorabilia relating to the different types of games. Now that people are learning more about different sports and sports stars, there has been a surge in the popularity of sports information from all over the world that may not ordinarily have become popular without the help of the internet and its method of spreading news and information. Now you can easily find sporting memorabilia for baseball, soccer, football, UFC wrestling championships, NASCAR, tennis and every other sporting event under the sun.

The best way to find the sporting memorabilia that you are looking for is to perform a little bit of research online. There are a wide variety of different sources that will prove to be useful when it comes to finding the sporting memorabilia that you are looking for. There are blogs, information websites, online shops and many other sources for information and details regarding sporting memorabilia and where you can find the pieces of memorabilia that you are looking for.

Keep in mind when purchasing sporting memorabilia that your memorabilia collections need to be preserved in the most perfect possible condition. If you are not well preserving your sporting memorabilia, then there is no way for your sporting memorabilia to gain any value whatsoever. This is the reason for why most serious collectors are putting their sporting memorabilia collections into air-tight containers, moisture proof vaults and so on. This is because they want their memorabilia to gain in value rather than to lose value over time, and this is an important part of getting the most out of any sports memorabilia collection.

This hobby that has to do with collecting sporting memorabilia can involve a lot of really unique and distinct items including foot ball cards, uniforms from sports players, home run record baseballs, record footballs and other unique pieces of sporting memorabilia that will be worth a lot over time from collectors that are serious about the sport. When you are choosing pieces of sporting memorabilia for you to buy, what you need to think about is how much the item is going to be worth over time, and who the item will appeal to. If you buy items that appeal to you, you may never be able to resell them unless someone else finds them appealing as well. Keep this in mind when shopping for different types of sporting memorabilia.
