Tips for a Sport Collection

bobgibsonCollecting a memorability sport collection is something that can be truly exciting as a hobby and also truly profitable. Perhaps you have always had an interest in sports, or perhaps you just love collecting items of value. If you are interested in creating your own sport collection, you need to know where to start as well as how to get the most out of the memorabilia that you buy. Sports memorabilia purchased for a sport collection can be truly worthwhile if you decide to purchase memorabilia with a significant past or a significant price tag attached. Today many adults are collecting the same baseball cards and other memorabilia that they kept in shoe boxes as kids. Have you allowed your sport collection to grow with you, or is it time to start a new one?

People have been building up their own unique sport collection concepts for as long as there have been sports to be fans of. This does not mean that all sport related stuff is worth anything. Do not simply go out and collect anything relating to a specific sport, otherwise you will end up with a lot of merchandise that is not worth the paper it is printed on, or the cloth, or so on. What you are going to want to do is become well versed in the sport, its history, the memorabilia that is popular, what people are looking for, and so on. The more that you research when it comes to building a sport collection, the better you will prosper in the end. There is no way for you to tell how much a certain item is going to be worth until you do your homework to figure out what people are actually going to be willing to pay for it.

If you have a favorite baseball or football team, you should study the history of each player to find out who was the best back in the day. You should also specifically look for players that have unique characteristics and qualifications that make their sport collection memorabilia stand out. Sometimes a single unique skill or unusual event will be capable of driving up the price of sports memorabilia significantly. Make sure to study the coaches, the rookies and other special edition memorabilia to build a sport collection that is truly great.

Another thing to keep in mind when building your sport collection is that you need to make sure you are shopping at reputable dealers because there are people out there that are less than reputable. Make sure that you are dealing with people that you can trust. All sports memorabilia should be capable of being authenticated, and do not settle for anything less. This way, you will be safe, and you will be able to guarantee that your entire sport collection is authentic and worth the money that you paid for it.

Buying Graded Baseball Trading Cards

baseballRegardless of whether you are a die hard fan of sports or just looking to increase your collection of baseball trading cards, you should know that there is a wide variety of options available to you on eBay when it comes to buying graded baseball trading cards. Grading cards is serious business because having a trustworthy system for grading cards is an important thing when it comes to the baseball cards collecting hobby.

The most common grading system that is used when it comes to buying and selling baseball trading cards is the Professional Sports Authenticator or PSA system. If you are looking for assistance in grading your baseball trading cards, then this is a good authentication system on which to base your findings. It ranges from 10 down to 1, with the following specifications:

Grade 10 – Gem Mint Grade - This grade is for baseball trading cards that are as perfect as they can possibly be. Their corners are still sharp, their colors are still glossy, and there is no staining on marks on the card at all. Another characteristic of baseball trading cards that are Gem Mint grade is that their image is properly centered.

Grade 9 – Mint Grade - With this grade, the baseball trading cards only possess minor flaws, such as a slight imperfection in printing or an image that is slightly off center, but the card is otherwise in excellent condition.

Grade 8 – Near Mint-Mint Grade - In this grade, you have baseball trading cards that are excellent but they may have slight fraying or borders that are slightly off-white.

Grade 7 – Near Mint Grade - In this grade, a close inspection of the baseball trading card may reveal slight wear to the surface or corners that are slightly frayed. The image should be mostly glossy.

Grade 6 – Excellent-Mint Grade - Baseball trading cards receiving this grade may have surface wear that is visible or some sort of printing defect without costing any overall appeal.

Grade 5 – Excellent Grade – The baseball trading cards that receive this grade are in excellent condition but may have some minor corner rounding or chipping around the edges, and some noticeable but minor surface scratches may be present.

Grade 4 – Very Good-Excellent Grade - The baseball trading cards in this category may have slight surface wear and some slightly rounded corners but some of their original gloss intact.

Grade 3 – Very Good Grade - The baseball trading cards in this category may have some rounding of the corners and some slight scratching of the surface or scuffing.

Grade 2 – Good Grade - The baseball trading cards in this category may have apparent creases or rounded corners and gloss that is no longer present.

Grade 1 – Poor to Fair Grade - Finally, the baseball trading cards that fall into this category generally show advanced signs of wear including rounded corners, chipped and fraying edges, chipping, pitting and scuffing as well as a lack of gloss on the surface.

Vintage Sports Memorabilia

sportsmemorIf you are looking for a hobby or an endeavor that is exciting and profitable and you enjoy sports of any kind, then you may want to consider giving sports memorabilia collecting a chance. Maybe you have always had a serious interest in a sport team or a sporting event. Perhaps you have collected baseball cards or sports accessories or other vintage sports memorabilia all of your life. Today, many adults are collecting products and sports memorabilia that reflect their favorite players or teams. Some people even take sports memorabilia collecting to the next level by running a business. Whatever your particular passion is, here are some useful tips that will improve your ability at sports memorabilia collecting, buying and selling.

>> Soak up as much information as you can about the industry as well as the team or player that you are collecting vintage sports memorabilia for. Just because something is old, that does not mean it is valuable – So if you are keen on collecting sports memorabilia, you need to be willing to research what will and will not be profitable as a part of your collection. The best thing that you can do is research, research and research before you buy anything. This way, you can ensure that everything you add to your sports memorabilia is worthy of being there.

>> Shop only with reputable dealers regardless of whether you are buying online or offline. You should make sure to find several different reputable dealers that sell authentic vintage sports memorabilia and other quality products. Shop only with dealers that you feel like you can trust, and be absolutely aware of scams that exist online. If a dealer cannot provide proof that something is authentic, do not buy it. Forged signatures are worth absolutely nothing in your sports memorabilia collection. If you ever find yourself working with a dealer that does not seem reputable in any way, it is absolutely vital that you not work with that dealer, lest you be taken for a lot of money for absolutely nothing.

>> Take proper care of all of your sports memorabilia items by protecting them while displaying them. If you have high ticket signed collectibles, then they should absolutely be protected all the time. Keep them in a dry place in your home, above the ground in case of water damage. Do not simply pack your sports memorabilia items away in plastic bags or cardboard boxes, because sealed containers like plexi glass are much more suitable. This will protect your sports memorabilia items from insects and mice. Your vintage sports memorabilia collectibles should always be stored at room temperature and away from direct exposure from the sun and exposure to moisture if you want to keep them in the best possible condition.
