January 7th, 2012 — Olympic Memorabilia, Original Autographs, Sports, Summer Olympics, Winter Olympics
When it comes to sporting events, there are few that capture the hearts and minds of the people as much as the Olympics. As such, the popularity of Olympic memorabilia continues to rise. If you are looking for a unique piece of memorabilia that was a part in a world wide phenomenon, valuable and fun to discuss, these are some of the best items to collect. Since the Olympics only happen every few years, it can be difficult to find some of the rarer collectibles, but with careful shopping, you can have some success. Here are some tips to help you on your search and to make sure you end up with authentic Olympic memorabilia.
1. Start with a licensed dealer.
The easiest way to find Olympic memorabilia is to look for a licensed dealer. Many states will have shops that work with the IOCC on releasing certain pieces to the public. Typically, these dealers will carry a mix of rare and common collectibles that will range from pins, to shirts, and even to items used by the actual athletes that competed in the games.
2. Look online.
Online auction sites are a treasure trove that can contain some of the best Olympic memorabilia. This is mainly due to the fact that stores around the world can post their merchandise and you have access to a much wider selection than normal. When shopping with an online merchant, make sure that they have good feedback and a history of providing authentic merchandise. News travels quickly online and generally, if someone was defrauded by a seller, there will be a way to easily find out.
3. Decide what you are looking for.
Your search will be a lot easier if you have a specific date in mind or a specific Olympics. You can narrow it down even further by event for certain types of Olympic memorabilia, or you can keep your options open to help you find more options. This is an important step for any collector to take. If you are looking for autographs, make sure you have the correct name of the athlete as well as the events that they competed in to make your search easier. It is also helpful to decide whether you want to collect summer or winter Olympic memorabilia.
4. Keep looking.
If you don’t find the right Olympic memorabilia the first time you start looking, don’t give up hope. This is a very popular type of collectible and generally you will be able to find many new items on a continuous basis. The best collectors keep checking back week after week until they find the pieces they are looking for. With a little luck and a lot of perseverance, finding the right Olympic memorabilia is easy.
If you love sports, this is a great way to express your devotion and celebrate the achievements of your favorite athletes, or the countries they represent. Finding a rare autograph from a competitor in these games is quite a lot of fun and many are quite valuable.

January 7th, 2012 — Baseball Jerseys, Baseball Memorabilia, Sports Memorabilia

Baseball fan love everything about the game—the atmosphere, the rules, the players, the equipment, and especially the collectible memorabilia like baseball jerseys, the older, the better. Major League Baseball produces tons of memorabilia like bats, balls, caps, cards, logos, banners, and almost any kind of souvenir and collectible item you can think of. This merchandise is available in a variety of places. Some brick and mortar stores specialize in sports memorabilia—even furniture bearing team logos, like a Cardinals couch. Online stores offer a wide variety of products, too, and of course, online auctions are a great place to find anything you’re looking for, including sports memorabilia.
If you’re looking for collectible baseball jerseys, auctions are a great place to look. Often, teams and other organizations will offer old jerseys for auction to raise money for charity. Often these items are signed, or have special significance. This isn’t a discount way to buy the items, but at least the money spent goes for a good cause. Stores that specialize in sports merchandise carry just about every kind of jersey and every other item you could want, too.
If you can purchase memorabilia like baseball jerseys and take it to an autograph signing (or purchase it there, as things like that are typically offered for sale specifically so you can have them signed) then you have a one-of-a-kind piece of sports memorabilia made even more special if the athlete uses your name. The ones bearing only a signature will fetch a much higher price should you decide to sell the item at auction—if your buyers can be convinced the signature is real, that is.
When purchasing baseball jerseys online or just about anywhere, the first thing you want to do is make sure the tag is intact. It’s a common trick among those who try to sell “official” merchandise to cut the tag out so you can’t verify the manufacturer. Chances are fairly high that if the tag’s gone, the item isn’t genuine. These days, with a good printer and software almost anyone can produce sports t-shirts, jerseys, baseball caps, and virtually anything that mimics the look of official merchandise. Look for the MLB tag on the item to ensure that you’re getting a genuine baseball jersey.
When it comes to buying autographed baseball jerseys, there are a number of things you can do to ensure the item is genuine. While it’s always best to get the autograph yourself so there’s no doubt, if you do want to purchase one, ask if any pictures were taken at the signing. All autograph dealers don’t do this, but some very reputable ones will show a picture of he celebrity or athlete signing the item.
Look at the athlete’s autograph from other sources. Make sure the autograph you’re looking at is genuine, and compare the photos carefully. Remember, though, a talented forger can do wonders, so you at least understand the risk when purchasing autographed baseball jerseys from dealers and other sources.

Before you jump into the world of sports memorabilia collecting, there is some basic information that you should be well aware of. First and foremost, you should have an understanding of certain terms that are common when it comes to sports memorabilia collecting. For example:
- Photos, jerseys, cards and related sports equipment, when they have been autographed by an athlete, are known as memorabilia when the signature has been adequately certified by a distributor that is reputable within the industry.
- When you have replica items and authentic items that are not signed, or that are signed but the autographs have not been properly authenticated, then the items are known as collectibles rather than as memorabilia.
You should remember, however, that the two terms collectibles and memorabilia are often referred to interchangeably so sometimes it will be hard to tell whether or not a particular piece of memorabilia or a particular collectible is or is not authentically autographed.
In the field of sports memorabilia collecting, you are going to find a wide variety of different information that suits not only novice collectors but also more experienced collectors as well. It is suggested that you soak up as much information as you can when you are just beginning to build up your collection. Buying and taking care of the items that you acquire when sports memorabilia collecting are two important factors of getting the most out of the items that you collect.
You should make sure that you have an idea of how much you are actually willing to spend when it comes to sports memorabilia collecting. This is going to help make sure to prevent you from purchasing anything on impulse, and it will also help you figure out what types of memorabilia you are actually going to collect. As your sports memorabilia collecting pastime grows over a period of time, you will be able to acquire anything you like, so don’t be afraid to start small if your budget requires it.
You are also going to want to do an adequate amount of information when it comes to sports memorabilia collecting. You are going to want to learn about retailers in sports memorabilia collecting, and you are going to want to figure out what companies actually have signing deals with real athletes in order to determine which autographs are authentic and which are not. This is going to help you buy real, legitimate memorabilia that is not fraudulent.
Make sure that you know a little bit about what memorabilia fraud is when you get into the sports memorabilia collecting hobby. Do not buy anything that does not have documentation that proves how authentic it is. The more prepared that you are when it comes to sports memorabilia collecting, the better protected you will be from being ripped off in this exciting and interested collecting hobby.
