Crown UK (Great Britain) Europe Coins: World Coins & Paper Money
The crown is a standard and historic British coin, and as such is of tremendous interest to collectors. In 1526, Cardinal Wolsey was ordered to alter the standard of the coins to the same standards observed by foreign countries. This was intended to prevent English coin ending up in Europe due to the high value compared to circulating foreign coins.Discount & Bargain
Apart from altering the values of existing coins, new gold coins of a baser metal were issued. The gold `crown of the rose' with the royal coat of arms on the front and a Tudor rose on the back was one of these. It was equal in value to 4s 6d, and was the very first of the `crown' denomination. The crown was continued in subsequent reigns both in gold and silver.
Only two types of crown have appeared during the reign of the present queen. Two crown pieces have also been struck; the coronation crown of 1953, the front side of which is reminiscent of the first crown of Edward VI, since the queen is depicted as riding a horse. The crown dated 1960 reverts to an illustration of the customary profile of the queen's head. With the exception of crowns struck in 1957, '58 and '59 as part of a £10,000,000 order from the Treasury, no other gold coins have been struck during the reign of Elizabeth II. The back of this crown has the St George and dragon design which was originally produced for the 1818 crown.
