In 1865, another coin was created. This coin was the three cent nickel. Although it looked as if it were nickel, the principal metal in the composition of this coin was copper. These three cent nickels continue to be produce in conjunction with the coin’s silver counterpart. The nickel version of the silver coin was only minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. By the year 1873, the silver version of the coin was discontinued. The three cent nickel version of the denomination continued to be produced until 1889 when the whole it was decided that the coin would be discontinued altogether.
