With the arrival of the Napoleonic Wars, the copper which had provided the material for the Coronet Head (1816-39) was not available for a time due to the supply coming from England. This was only the beginning of troubles for the Mint as public ridicule had lashed out at the Mint’s engravers for making mistakes on the apparel and other features that Lady Liberty proudly displayed. The engravers continued to redesign the Coronet Head (1816-39) until 1839, when they finally decided on a particular design. This coin like many of its counterparts has a great deal of history. However, unlike other coins, this particular one has merely been caught up in multiple situations.
