From 1859 until 1864 the coins contained 88% copper and 12% nickel. During this time it was called a nickel, or nick, until the five cent piece was issued. In 1864 the composition of the coin was then changed to 95% copper and 5% zinc, reducing the weight to 48 grams from its predecessor of 78 grams. The total production of the Indian Head cent was 1,849,648,000 total pieces.
