Twoonies, or two dollars, were introduced in Canada in 1996. These coins worth two dollars get their name from the nickname of the one-dollar coin, Loonies, combined with the “T” from the word “two.” Hence, Twoonies are worth two dollars to the Loonies one-dollar value. These Canada two dollar coins are also often called Toonies instead of Twoonies. Like they did with the term Loonie, the Royal Canadian Mint acquired exclusive rights to the use of Toonie for their two-dollar coins.
