Pre-decimal: Copper Australia Australia, Oceania Coins: World Coins & Paper Money
Pre-decimal copper coins are a fascinating theme to collectors of coins of the United Kingdom. Before decimalization, the British pound was divided into 20 shillings. Each shilling was comprised of 12 pence, adding up to 240 pence to the pound. The symbol for the shilling was "s". This is not from the first letter of the word shilling, but from the Latin solidus. The symbol for the penny was "d", from the Latin denarius (the solidus and denarius were Roman coins). The small-value coins of the British Empire, pre-decimal, were minted in copper and silver.Discount & Bargain
Copper coinage was introduced It was during the reign of King James I (1603–1625). James realized, based on his previous experience as King of Scotland, that small denomination copper coins would be accepted. They had been in use in Scotland and on the European mainland for some time. However the English seemed to have an obsession with gold and silver, requiring that pre-decimal coins had their correct values' worth of metal. James decided not to have the pre-decimal copper coinage produced by the Royal Mint. He put the production of farthings into the hands of John Harington, 1st Baron Harington of Exton.
Pre-decimal copper farthings were produced from 1672 to1675 and again in 1679. The front was inscribed with a left-facing bust of the king, with the inscription CAROLVS A CAROLO, which means Charles, son of Charles. The back side featured the left-facing seated Britannia, with the inscription BRITANNIA and the date beneath Britannia.
