The history of Korean coins and paper money date back as far as 996 with the Gorveo Dynasty, when this group of Korean citizens innovated coins and paper money, the first iron coins was minted. At the time the Chinese currency circulated through Korean markets, such as grain and linen. Not long after, during the Joseon period, copper coins were minted and widely circulated. Nearly a thousand years later, post division of North and South Korean, the Central Bank of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korean was established in 1947. From there, a new system of coins and paper money currency was issued to the Koreans, which lost its value over time. And in 2001, the Koreans went to the dollar that was established back in 1978.
