Television props are one of the rarest, exotic and priciest forms of television memorabilia. Props are distinct from set dressing. In order to be categorized as a prop, the object has to be used by the actors and be integrated the dramatic action of a scene. For example, imagine a scene that takes place in a living room. The bric a brac in the room is set dressing. If, on the other hand, the scene calls for an actor to pick up a decorative figurine, it becomes a prop at that point. Thus props are exciting collectibles, because of their pivotal role in the Television series or movie they appeared in.

The difference between props and set dressing is very similar to the difference between actors and extras. The prop department has to have multiple copies of a prop. It may need to be shown in different conditions through out a Television. Even if it only appears in one shot, they will have multiple copies as there will likely be multiple takes. Some props, such as prop guns, are rented by Television productions and thus may have appeared in more than one Television show or series.
The cardinal rule of Television memorabilia collecting applies to props as well—always go for quality rather than quantity. More is less, more or less. Pay careful attention to condition, pristine mint condition items hold their value far better in the long run. You may not be buying Television memorabilia props with the intention of reselling it, but if you find yourself ever needing or wanting to sell the item you will be glad you kept the props in top condition.
