From its origins at house parties in the boogie-down Bronx, New York in the late 1970s, hip-hop has grown to be a popular and influential style of music all over the world. Americans who dominate the genre in terms of international sales, but every country has their own local artists. Some of them, like Thaitanium in Thailand, are actually quite good. In spite of the music’s immense popularity it has stirred controversy, especially for the violent and misogynistic gangsta rap style. It has spawned mega stars like Snoop Doggy Dogg and Eminem who have become household music names. It has not, however, caught on with memorabilia collectors.Discount & Bargain
Several institutions have staged exhibits of artifacts, all the way up to the Smithsonian museum, but prices remain fairly low. Thus it may be a good time to start collecting rap and hip hop memorabilia. Hip hop is problematic. What can you collect, actually? Hip hop and rap artists typically use turntables, electronics and microphones, as collectables these items lack the panache of guitars and such. You could purchase autographs, but make sure they’re not the pre-printed kind. If you’re going to spend money, buy from someone offering a certificate of authenticity to be sure you’re getting the real thing.
Concert tickets are available, but far from a proven commodity. Hip hop and rap have not been around long enough to have gained a massive collector following, so items will tend to be affordable. Clothing is often problematic, as it tends to be off the rack sporting gear. Many artists have their own clothing lines, however.
