Movie scripts are a fascinating aspect of movie memorabilia collecting. Not only do they make excellent keepsakes of your favorite movie, they give you insight into how the movie was created. Around 200 cast, crew and technicians work on any given Hollywood project. About 500 copies of the script get handed out. When the show is over, may are either worn out or thrown away, with some being handed back to the studio. The studio keeps a few copies and bins the rest. As a result, scripts can be an extremely rare form of movie collectible.

Prices on scripts may vary greatly. One thing that dramatically affects a script’s value is whether or not is an original scrip actually used by the studio or production company. These are scripts used by cast, crew and producers, and typically show some wear and tear, as they were used in actually making the movie. Most scripts from the 1920s or 1930s are in very bad shape because of the poor quality paper used.
When inspecting a script for authenticity, the first thing to inspect is the type of paper the script is printed on. If the paper is Bright and reflective it is more than likely a recent copy. That type of paper didn’t become available until the late 80’s and early nineties. Be aware studios such as Universal in the sixties and seventies printed scripts on very thin cheap paper and typically used dull pastel colors not available today. Punch holes also tell you about a script’s authenticity. Until the late sixties, scripts had smaller punch holes.
