Movie props are an inspiring, rare and exotic form of movie memorabilia collectible. Props are distinct from set dressing. In order to qualify as a prop, the item has to be used by actors and part of the dramatic action of a scene. For example, imagine a scene that takes place in a library. The books used in the library are considered set dressing. However, if the scene calls for an actor to pick up a book, it becomes a prop at that point. Thus props are exciting collectibles, because of their pivotal role in the movie they were used in.

The difference between props and set dressing is analogous to the difference between actors and extras. Typically, the prop department will have multiple copies of a prop. It may need to be shown in different conditions through out a movie. Even if it only appears in one shot, they will have multiple copies as there will likely be multiple takes. Some props, such as prop guns, are rented by movie productions and thus may have appeared in more than one movie. Others, like the lightsabers from Star Wars, were made specially for that movie.
The cardinal rule of movie memorabilia collecting applies to props as well—always go for quality rather than quantity. More is less, more or less. Pay careful attention to condition, pristine mint condition items hold their value far better in the long run. You may not be buying movie memorabilia props with the intention of reselling it, but if you find yourself ever needing or wanting to sell it you will be glad you kept the props in top condition.
