Many collector of movie memorabilia focus on collecting publicity photos. Often these photos are posed, poised portraits of glamorous movie stars. Sometimes they are stills taken on the set of actual movies. Typically the movie stills that depict scenes from the actual movie are not actually taken from the movie, but instead, these photos are taken separately. When the scene is still set up, but before the camera rolls, the movie still photographer jumps in and shots the still. These are then used for publicity and promotion. Many collectors of movie memorabilia photos also collect autographs.

If you are just starting to collect movie photos, be selective. Choose a theme according to what you like best, as no one can predict what movie photos will be considered collectible in the future. One possible theme is celebrity glamour, which involves photos that typically feature an actor or actors in character. You can choose between color photos or black-and-white photos of your favorite movie or movie star, no matter the movie era or genre.
