The first step when you are dealing with collectible memorabilia is to figure out how you want to collect, organize, store, display and preserve your memorabilia. What keepsakes are you intending to hang onto for the long haul, and which memorabilia keepsakes would you rather sell or give up? Once you have figured out all of that, the next thing that you can do is choose the ways that you are going to store or to display your memorabilia. This is going to involve hunting down resources that will allow you to keep your mementos safe for many years to come.
The difference between storing and displaying
Once you have chosen the heirlooms and the other memorabilia items that you are interested in keeping, the next step for you is going to be to decide which you want to store and which you want to display. When you are making these important decisions, some of the following questions might be helpful for you to ask yourself:
- Do you like this particular item enough that you want to put it up on display? Not every one of your meaningful items is going to be pleasant enough for you to look at it every single day.
- Is this something that you can safely display? Some items, especially those that are older or that are made from fragile materials, may simply not be well suited for displaying because certain items cannot handle being exposed to light, to air, to moisture or to dust, and these are things that displaying could potentially involve.
- Do you have enough room to display the particular item? You are going to want to keep in mind that your goal is going to be to surround yourself with the most meaningful keepsakes, but you need to achieve this without feeling overwhelmed or cramped or cluttered in the process.
As a basic rule of thumb, you are going to want to pick just a few favorite items that you can comfortably and safely display, and then simply plan on storing the rest.
Safe Storage
You are likely going to find that much of your memorabilia will need to be stored because you have limitations in display space. Choosing the best types of storage solutions for memorabilia is going to be a truly important step in avoiding both deterioration and damage. Recommendations for storage are going to depend on a wide variety of factors including the age of the item, the materials it’s made of and what type of climate you are living in. In general, it is best to choose a space that is climate controlled and that keeps your items safe to ensure that they are protected while you are storing them.
