Memorabilia -> Television Memorabilia -> 1950-1959

Were you a child of the 1950’s? If so, chances are you remember the 1950’s tv shows that set the tone for our entertainment today. These shows were much loved and back in an era when choices were limited to three channels, the audience for these 1950’s tv shows was vast. As a result, the networks tried to monetize the shows by producing various types of memorabilia. If you missed out on that memorabilia when you were a kid, don’t worry! It’s come back in a big way and there are thousands of collectibles out there just waiting to be discovered.

Some of the most popular 1950’s tv show collectibles were lunch boxes. Kids would take these to school with them and enjoyed showing them off to their friends. It is still possible to find one of these collectibles in decent shape and flea markets are a great place to start your search. Whether you loved Hopalong Cassidy or Roy Rogers, these lunchboxes are highly sought after and many of them are actually pretty valuable.

Next on the list of favorite 1950’s tv show collectibles were the small figurines and toys put out by the networks. These were commonly styled after western heros or popular stars at the time. By far, the western collectibles are the most popular and it is possible to find one of these original figurines at auction for several thousand dollars. If that’s a little steep, you can head online for some great deals from other collectors and antique stores. Online auction are a great place to get 1950’s tv show collectibles.

In addition to these fan favorites, the advertising inserts that promoted these 1950’s tv shows were also quite popular. This was a totally new medium at the time and it is fascinating to look back and see how the shows were promoted and what they entailed. For those that are already collecting advertising, these collectibles hold particular value.

Numerous different types of merchandise were put out for 1950’s tv shows and you’d be surprised by just how many you can find. From six guns, to coffee mugs, tv trays, and everything else in between, if there was a show in the 1950’s you enjoyed, chances are you’ll be able to find collectibles to match it. Some shows were so hugely popular that they spawned giant fan clubs, held massive parades and enjoyed tremendous ratings. These much loved shows may no longer be on the air, but thanks to these collectibles, you can relive your memories and see just how great television was back in the day.

No matter what kind of 1950’s tv show memorabilia you’re seeking, online auctions offer the widest selection. You’ll be able to find collectibles from all over the world. Many private collectors use these services to sell of parts of their collections and antique stores and private dealers also use these services to sell merchandise. If all else fails, check out your local second hand stores, garage sales or flea markets.

While many of us recognize Looney Tunes cartoons from their run on television, they actually ran in movie theaters for 39 years, from 1930 to 1969. They were Warner Bros.’s first theatrical animated series. The term Looney Tunes also refers to the animated cast of characters in Warner Bros. Cartoons. The term is often spelled Looney “Toons.”

The original purpose of Looney Tunes cartoons was to showcase musical “tunes” for the movie-going audience. Early characters had short adventures set to a musical score. Later characters became hugely popular, like the ones that are still popular today even though they’ve been around for decades. Even small children, born long after the heyday of Looney Tunes and that type of cartoon in general recognize the likes of Elmer Fudd and his constant foil, Bugs Bunny. Sylvester and his hard-to-catch snack, Tweety Bird are Looney Tunes characters as are the stuttering Porky Pig, lisping Daffy Duck, and the Tasmanian Devil, who in recent years has gained new popularity and now goes by the shortened nickname, Taz.

Other Looney Tunes cartoons featured characters like Marvin the Martian, who always seemed to want to blow up the earth, Wile E. Coyote and his would-be-dinner, the Road Runner, Foghorn Leghorn, suave but smelly Pepe Le Pew, rootin’ tootin’ Yosemite Sam, Speedy Gonzales and a long list of popular and smaller characters that children and even adults love to watch.

Originally, Looney Tunes cartoons were produced and own by Leon Schlesinger Productions, but were sold to Warner Bros. In 1944. They were most popular animated features in theaters through their run in 1969, with the last theater short being one featuring the character Cool Cat called “Injun Trouble.” Merrie Melodies was another popular animated series, but Looney Tunes used the same characters over and over, where Merrie Melodies typically did not.

The most famous character featured in Looney Tunes cartoons is Bugs Bunny, even though he wasn’t the first. Bugs appeared for the first time in 1940. When the theater shorts were shown on television in the 1950s, Looney Tunes became even more popular. Because Looney Tunes featured scenes that contained mild sexual innuendos, phrases and actions that were being viewed as racist, and violence, the cartoons shows on television in the 1970s were typically edited with this kind of content removed.

Looney Tunes cartoons weren’t produced for the theater going audience from 1969 until 1987, when new cartons were made for theatrical release. None have been made since 2004, but old and new ones alike can be seen regularly on television. Several Looney Tunes characters have appeared in movies now, including Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Space Jam and Looney Tunes: Back in Action.

For collectors, acquiring a complete collection is a fun challenge, but the earliest Looney Tunes cartoons and those aired during WWII are the hardest to find. These are no longer sold or aired because of the way that Germans, Asians, Jews and African-Americans are racially stereotyped in the cartoons.

Ever since the television became a common item in every household across America, television shows have established themselves as a regular part of our everyday lives. We all have personal favorites when it comes to television shows, and we all try to make an effort to follow those favorite shows as closely as possible from week to week. Some of us are so addicted to our favorite television shows that we become serious about collecting television memorabilia so that we can feel as if we own a piece of that television show that we are so fond of.

As a result, we decide to become collectors of the items that remind us of our favorite television experiences. Television memorabilia is fast becoming a common collection item because it allows us to make our favorite television shows more real, by bringing home a piece of the show of our very own. When a show becomes popular, many television memorabilia items are released including companion books to the show. These companion books offer a great inside glimpse into numerous facets of the show beyond what we see on the television, in order to give us a better understanding of the television show and what it is all about. There are plenty of other pieces of television memorabilia that can be collected as well.

For example, many television shows are now being released in unique collector’s edition box DVD sets now. These DVD sets are considered to be collector’s items because they come in specially marked packages and they come with a wide variety of different bonus features such as commentary tracks, behind the scenes, deleted scenes and interviews with the cast. These special edition DVD sets have a special place in the television memorabilia collection of any serious fan.

There are plenty of other types of collections as well. There are plenty of items that can be collected and added to a television memorabilia collection including items that are signed by cast members, items that come from the set of the television show, and costumes that the cast members wore and so on. Some people also collect scripts from the television show and anything else that has played a role in the creation, development or filming of the show because these items are perceived to be valuable to the collector.

Items that are used during the television show filming are often made available to avid television memorabilia collectors. For example, reality television shows will often auction off their props once the season has come to an end, and the proceeds generally are donated to charity. There are plenty of other props that can be auctioned off or sold including costumes, weapons from crime shows, and anything that has been featured in an episode but is no longer needed. Many of these items are autographed and sold, with the profits benefiting charities and special interests, which means that everyone benefits.

If you have been thinking about starting a Entertainment memorabilia collection, then there are some very important guidelines you should keep in mind. Remember whether you collect for the investment, or for your own enjoyment. Regardless of which, you should still only buy that which you truly enjoy. While there are definitely trends in the varying collectors markets, it can be difficult to call any of them a sure bet when looking from an investors point of view. While many segments of the memorabilia market has shown growth, there are never any guarantees. By collecting that which you truly enjoy, you build yourself a bit of a defense against lack of market appreciation. If you collect things solely for worth, and they do not appreciate, you are left holding something you cannot even have a personal worth in.

Another general principle to consider when it comes to collecting memorabilia is that you should be attempting to buy the best pieces that are available within your price range. Although it may be tempting for you to consider acquiring as many items as you possibly can in the shortest possible period of time in order to get the ball rolling on your collection, you should be taking your time and trying to buy one really great piece every year rather than trying to buy a number of pieces that are more mediocre in terms of quality.

Quality versus quantity is something that should be your mantra when it comes to collecting memorabilia. In a period of ten years’ time, your collection is going to command a much greater level of respect if you contain just a few really exceptional pieces rather than a larger number of pieces that are merely average in nature.

When it comes to going shopping, one of the most important things that you are going to want to keep in mind is provenance. When you do some due diligence on the material’s source as well as the story that surrounds it, then you will be better able to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud, and there is plenty of fraud out there. There is a magazine known as Forbes Collector Magazine which reported in the year 2004 that as many as 75% to 90% of all autographs that are sold on eBay are fraudulent according to experts. You need to know your source, and you need to choose reputable auction houses and dealers when purchasing memorabilia to collect.

Many of the pieces of memorabilia that are being sold online come with a letter of authenticity, or a certificate of authenticity. Make sure that this is really a legitimate piece of evidence that your autograph is real, by tracing the history of the COA or LOA rather than just accepting it to be fact.
