If you have been thinking about starting a Entertainment memorabilia collection, then there are some very important guidelines you should keep in mind. Remember whether you collect for the investment, or for your own enjoyment. Regardless of which, you should still only buy that which you truly enjoy. While there are definitely trends in the varying collectors markets, it can be difficult to call any of them a sure bet when looking from an investors point of view. While many segments of the memorabilia market has shown growth, there are never any guarantees. By collecting that which you truly enjoy, you build yourself a bit of a defense against lack of market appreciation. If you collect things solely for worth, and they do not appreciate, you are left holding something you cannot even have a personal worth in.
Another general principle to consider when it comes to collecting memorabilia is that you should be attempting to buy the best pieces that are available within your price range. Although it may be tempting for you to consider acquiring as many items as you possibly can in the shortest possible period of time in order to get the ball rolling on your collection, you should be taking your time and trying to buy one really great piece every year rather than trying to buy a number of pieces that are more mediocre in terms of quality.
Quality versus quantity is something that should be your mantra when it comes to collecting memorabilia. In a period of ten years’ time, your collection is going to command a much greater level of respect if you contain just a few really exceptional pieces rather than a larger number of pieces that are merely average in nature.
When it comes to going shopping, one of the most important things that you are going to want to keep in mind is provenance. When you do some due diligence on the material’s source as well as the story that surrounds it, then you will be better able to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud, and there is plenty of fraud out there. There is a magazine known as Forbes Collector Magazine which reported in the year 2004 that as many as 75% to 90% of all autographs that are sold on eBay are fraudulent according to experts. You need to know your source, and you need to choose reputable auction houses and dealers when purchasing memorabilia to collect.
Many of the pieces of memorabilia that are being sold online come with a letter of authenticity, or a certificate of authenticity. Make sure that this is really a legitimate piece of evidence that your autograph is real, by tracing the history of the COA or LOA rather than just accepting it to be fact.

September 19th, 2009 — Guitar Picks, Music Memorabilia
When you think of guitar picks, do you think of those tiny rounded triangles of plastic that probably cost about a penny to manufacture? Guitarists used to file down materials like wood, bone, stone, amber, ivory and even metal or shell to get the size, thickness and shape they wanted. D’Andrea Picks created the first plastic picks in 1922 out of a piece of celluloid with a tortoise-shell look that looked very close to the real tortoiseshell in the picks commonly used in Greenwich Village at the time.
The most popular shape for guitar picks was the shape first used in those original picks created by D’Andrea picks. D’Andrea was also the first company to create custom picks for certain guitarists. One of the first guitarists to make pick imprinting popular was Nick Lucas, back in the 1930s. One of the most popular and recognized custom guitar picks today are those that bear the logo of Fender Guitars.
Throwing guitar picks into the audience has become a popular thing for musical artists to do at concerts, much like crooners of old would throw their scarves, or the towel that was around their neck to mop their sweat. Any item touched by a celebrity has value in the eyes of a fan, especially one that was worn around their neck or held in their hand. So even a plain guitar pick tossed out by a favorite artists becomes a priceless collector’s items to an enthusiastic fan.
But many artists used personalized guitar picks, which make them even more fun. The band’s name, their logo, or the guitarists name might be on the pick. Artists also autograph picks, or put their faces on them in some cases. These, when thrown out into a crowd or signed at an official gathering and sold, make the items even more special.
One of the first big acts to throw custom guitar picks into the audience was the rock band Cheap Trick. Rick Nielsen, the brightly-colored, ball-cap-wearing guitarist would throw hundreds of custom picks into the audience during a concert. Now, most acts have started throwing their personalized picks into the audience.
Collectors love guitar picks for several reasons. They’re small and easy to display, there’s a huge variety of colors and styles available, and they’re inexpensive and fairly easy to acquire. If you can’t make that concert in the hopes of catching a personalized pick that your favorite act throws in to the audience, then check the band’s or the artist’s website. Many sell their personalized picks online. And if they don’t, you can look in any online auction site like eBay and probably find dozens of them available.
If you’re looking for an autograph from one of your favorite musical artists, guitar picks are easy to carry for them to sign. Though they’re small, autographed guitar picks are quickly becoming a favorite among musical collectors. If you’re not lucky enough to meet your favorite for a signature, autographed guitar picks are popular items on eBay and through autograph dealers.

September 16th, 2009 — Bon Jovi Posters, Music Memorabilia, Rock and Pop
One of the biggest rock bands of the 1980’s is still popular today and as such, many people are still trying to find their posters. Whether you are a new fan of the group, or you remember a certain poster that you had of them back in the 1980’s or 1990’s, it’s a lot of fun to see if you can track down a Bon Jovi poster for your own private collection. These may not be incredibly valuable when it comes to actual price, but when it comes to emotional value, they are very valuable indeed to many collectors.
Before you purchase a Bon Jovi poster, here are a few things to think about.
1. What is the overall condition of the poster?
In order to make sure that you will be getting the best value for your money, you’ll need to make sure that the Bon Jovi poster is in good condition. Try to find one that does not have rips or tears, or any tape marks on it. If the poster is used, that may be pretty hard, but you can come across some every once in awhile. Ideally, the poster should not be used, but those can be nearly impossible to find.
2. Is the Bon Jovi poster autographed?
In order to get a poster that is really valuable, it’s a good idea to see if you can find one that has been autographed. These can be worth thousands, depending on the condition of the poster and when it was signed. If you’re serious about collecting this type of memorabilia, it’s best to hold off and wait for that autographed copy. You may end up paying a little more for it initially, but it will be worth more over time, especially if you keep it in good condition.
3. Is the poster original?
This has become quite a problem lately, thanks to the wide availability of wide format printers and graphic artists. In order to make sure you are getting an authentic Bon Jovi poster, you may need to research the seller and ask to see a copy of the back of the poster before you buy it. If the price seems to be a bit low, or if the seller has several copies of the same poster for sale, chances are it is a reproduction and although you may find it valuable personally, it’s overall value will be nil.
4. When was the poster made?
The newer Bon Jovi posters aren’t worth as much as the ones that were produced when the band first made it big. In order to make sure you are getting a great deal, look for older posters from the 1980’s. They are not the easiest to find, but you will be able to score a great deal if you do come across one.
Start shopping for your Bon Jovi poster and see if you can’t uncover a rare deal – or even a signed copy for your collection.

September 15th, 2009 — Bo Diddley, Celebrity, Celebrity Autographs, Guitars, Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia

Bo Diddley is a legend, both for his guitar playing and his role as one of the first influences in modern rock ‘n roll. Born Ellas Othas Bates in Mississippi in 1928, he later became known as the “originator” because he was one of the first to move from playing the blues to playing rock ‘n roll. He started out playing violin and trombone in his church’s orchestra, but became captivated by the guitar and rhythmic gospel music.
Inspired by the music of John Lee Hooker, he started playing the music he loved with his friends, sometimes performing on street corners or for tips in night spots. He became a regular at the same club where Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker regularly performed in 1951 in Chicago. Then in 1954, he put together a band and made some demo recordings. One of those songs, Bo Diddley, became a #1 hit R & B single in 1955.
The Bo Diddley beat was a distinctive rhythm he often used in his music, a rumba-like beat he became known for. He was also recognized for his innovations with the guitar. His music often followed the same chord throughout the song, but had unusual rhythms and changes that made it dynamic. He often played an unusual looking guitar shaped like a box that he built himself in 1958. He also played the violin on some of his recordings. The songs he wrote were often witty takes or humorous versions of folk music.
When he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1955, Bo Diddley got himself banned from ever appearing again by going against the show’s wishes. He had been asked to sing a Merle Travis song, but instead sang his hit “Bo Diddley.” Despite Ed Sullivan’s anger and pronouncement that he wouldn’t last six months, Diddley had hit after hit through the 50s and 60s, and released 11 albums.
Bo Diddley wasn’t just a pioneer in musical styles or types of guitar, but in other areas, too. He was one of the first musicians to set up his own recording studio at his home. And he was also one of the first men to have women in his band. A woman led his band for the last 25 years he performed, in fact.
He went on to perform with well known acts, and receive numerous awards and distinctions from the musical community and from his fans. Bo Diddley appeared in a small part in the 1983 film Trading Places, and made commercials for Nike. His songs have been covered by a variety of acts over the years, and his birthplace has even been given a Mississippi Blues Trail historical marker to honor his contribution to the art form.
He’s only been gone since June, 2008, so his contributions to musical world continued until recently, even though he was less active in the months and years leading up to his death. eBay is a wonderful place to find Bo Diddley memorabilia like old vinyl albums and recordings.

September 14th, 2009 — Celebrity, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia

Andy Warhol paintings today are housed in museums, owned by private collectors and released as prints for public consumption. He was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928. Though he died in 1987 from complications after gall bladder surgery, his name is still well known today. He’s known as the father of Pop Art, an artistic movement that began to take shape in the 1960s. He also published books and made dozens of short homoerotic films that were often premiered in gay movie theaters.
The famous phrase “15 minutes of fame” was coined by Warhol, who himself was fascinated by celebrities and pop culture. He began his career in the 1960s as a commercial artist and illustrator, and met with resistance when he attempted a career as a serious artist because of his vast commercial work. When his artwork provided the debut of pop art on the West Coast in 1962 in LA, the Andy Warhol paintings on display featured Campbell’s Soup cans, dollars bills, Coke bottles and his very famous brightly-colored portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol paintings often depicted celebrities like Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and were less paintings than reproductions of their photos in almost Day-Glo colors. His artwork was produced via silk-screening which allowed for mass-production, and allowed anyone in his studio, which he called The Factory, to be able to create it.
Andy Warhol paintings became popular very quickly, but they were also controversial because of the method he used to make them and their subject matter. Some of his artwork featured stylized pictures taken right from the headlines, like a picture of a mushroom cloud and civil rights protesters being attacked by police dogs. Anything in American pop culture was fair game for Warhol’s analysis.
With the rise in popularity of Andy Warhol paintings came public discussions about whether or not pop art was really art at all. And two days before Robert Kennedy’s assassination, one of Warhol’s “factory” workers shot him and an art critic at his studio. Warhol nearly died as a result, and few doubt that the shooting affected his life and work from then on.
In the 1970s, Andy Warhol paintings were often of pop culture celebrities like Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Liza Minelli. His work became more popular again in the 1980s even as it was more openly criticized as being shallow and without depth or a true understanding of its subject.
Andy Warhol paintings, though, as many critics realize now, were meant to be not just pieces of art but an accurate reflection of the “surface” pop culture, with what appeared to be merely surface treatments of its subjects. He was also criticized for being in the “business” of art. But he described making money as art, and good business as the best art of all.
Andy Warhol paintings cost thousands of dollars, but his books, prints of his paintings, his avant-garde short films and other memorabilia can be found online in auctions and specialty shops.

September 13th, 2009 — Beatles Memorabilia, Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia, Rock and Pop
Out of all of the rock groups that rose to prominence in the 1960’s, none took the world by storm quite like The Beatles and since then, Beatles memorabilia has been a hot commodity. There are fans that have built up incredible collections throughout the years and when something does come up for auction, the reaction is usually incredible. If you are just getting into collecting Beatles memorabilia, there are quite a few different things that you can collect.
First, there are the limited edition LP’s, or the rare ones that still have all of their original covers and artwork. These are a rare piece of Beatles memorabilia that are still affordable for most collectors. If you do find an LP, it’s best to keep it safe and not to play it, since it can reduce the overall value. Look for an LP that is not scratched if at possible, and ideally, it would have never been used. The cover should be easy to read and in very good shape as well. If you can find this kind of Beatles memorabilia, you’re really in for a treat.
Next up, you can find Beatles memorabilia in the form of rare recording, both audio and video. These are a lot of fun to collect and many people have found that their private selection of audio tapes or even old videos are worth quite a bit of money. From pieces that were actually filmed by fans to old studio copies that are worth a mint, this is a great type of Beatles memorabilia that is very popular.
The 1960’s also brought in the advent of merchandising and Beatles memorabilia is no stranger to this. You can find literally thousands of different types of merchandising collectibles, from lunch boxes, to maps, posters, thermoses and everything else under the sun. These are generally worth less money that the usual audios or LP’s, but every once in awhile you can come across a great find. Look for merchandising collectibles that are either still in their original packaging, or those that are in very good shape.
Last but not least, autographs and photos are probably the most popular and valuable type of Beatles memorabilia. If you are just interested in getting an autograph for your own personal collection, they are not that hard to maintain and some may not be that expensive. However, for the true collector, it can take years to find the right Beatles memorabilia and autographs, especially if you are trying to build up a collection of all four, or even one that may include the legendary “fifth Beatle.”
The Beatles touched the hearts and minds of many generations and there are few groups that could lay claim to such a worldwide phenomenon. Whether you were a fan back then, or you’ve become a fan now, collecting Beatles memorabilia is a great way to express that appreciation of a group that changed the face of the music industry as we knew it.

September 9th, 2009 — Jazz Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia, Opera Memorabilia, Rock and Pop
Music memorabilia has always been popular, and although we associate it primarily with today’s rock and pop musicians, the practice of collecting items for musicians and groups dates back many hundred years. In fact, in Japan, before mass printing was used on a wide scale, it was common to have artists actually create posters of popular figures. Now, it’s a lot easier to collect and afford music memorabilia and it is more popular than ever. Let’s take a look at some of the best kinds of collectibles that are available right now.
Rock, Pop
By far, this is the most popular form of music memorabilia. You can find items from your favorite artists and bands very easily and there are many different types of items that you can collect. The most popular forms are t-shirts, posters, signed photographs as well as special collectibles that can usually only be found at concerts. While many of these items are more novelty items than actual collectibles, if they do carry an original autograph, they will be worth more money. The star that signs it will also determine just how much a piece of memorabilia may be worth.
Country
It may not be as universally loved as rock or pop, but country music is quickly growing in popularity. As a result the music memorabilia for country artists is also becoming more valuable. Once again, the most popular forms are tshirts and posters, but you can also find a few unique items on sale every once in awhile. Signed cowboy hats are very popular, and many stars are putting out their own lines of clothing, boots and hats, as well as special collector’s editions pick-up trucks.
Opera
When you think of the opera, one of the last things that springs to mind is memorabilia, but you may be surprised to learn that there is a very dedicated, albeit small, group of people that do collect opera memorabilia. This market trends towards signed programs or pictures. Many of these items are only available at high-end auctions.
Musicals
In the past fifty years, Broadway musicals have become a very important part of American culture, and you can find many different types of music memorabilia for this genre. Since props are so integral to performances, at the end of a run, many will be signed by the cast and auctioned off. Lobby cards, posters, programs and special autographed pictures of the stars are also very popular.
Jazz
Even though the jazz movement is small, the fans are die-hard and there are many great unique forms of music memorabilia connected with this movement. For example, B.B. King released a collectible, signed guitar that sold very well. Most of these items are directly related to the music and posters are generally not as common, unless they are signed.
If you’re trying to find music memorabilia, the best places to look are at music stores, second hand shops and of course, online auctions. Flea markets and garage sales are another great place to find unique items that may even be rare.

September 9th, 2009 — Ballet Memorabilia, Ballet Posters, Music Memorabilia
For a budding ballerina, there is nothing quite like the inspiration that can come from looking at a ballet poster. These works of art inspire, and for collectors, they are a way of enjoying and expressing a love for this amazing form of expression. If you love ballet, or if you are just looking for a graceful collectible, ballet posters are an excellent solution.
When you are shopping for a ballet poster, it is important to find out a few things first.
1. What performance is the poster from?
For example, a ballet poster that features a historic performance by Rudolph Nureyev or Margo Fontaine is going to be worth a lot more than a poster featuring dancers from Hoboken. Look for this information, which should be contained at the bottom of the poster. If you don’t see it, you may want to ask the seller for more information. However, most legitimate ballet posters will always contain not only the performance but the date that it was held. While a poster featuring dancers from Hoboken may be special to some, it is important to make sure that you know what you are getting before you buy it.
2. Who are the dancers featured?
Once again, we fall back into the fact that certain ballet posters that feature well known dancers are simply going to be more valuable. This is particularly true for those that follow a specific dancer’s career and collect memorabilia items celebrating certain accomplishments or performances. The poster should indicate the dancer that is pictured, but if it doesn’t, you may be able to tell simply by looking at it who is pictured.
3. Does the poster come with a frame?
This is more of a logical question, but the type of frame that contains the ballet poster can have a big impact on its overall value. For example, a gilt edged frame will be worth much more than one that was purchased at a local dollar store. Always try to find posters that are either already in valuable frames, or that will fit the frame you already own and would like to use.
4. What condition is the poster in?
Older posters will typically have a bit of wear and tear, but in many cases, you’ll be able to find a truly rare item that may have a rip or two. Always figure in the overall condition of a ballet poster, especially if you are buying from a private collector instead of a store. Look for small marks, folds or anything that may bring down the overall visual appeal of the poster, as well as the value.
A torn ballet poster may have sentimental value to some collectors, but it is always a good idea to try to get the best quality one that you can find. Posters do wear quite a bit, especially if they are not framed, so you can expect most vintage ballet posters to have a little bit of ear.

September 8th, 2009 — Grateful Dead Posters, Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia, Rock and Pop
Grateful Dead fans, often called Dead Heads, and music memorabilia collectors can pay hundreds or thousands of dollars for items like handbills and Grateful Dead posters. Anyone not familiar with the band or the unique style of images and posters used during the band’s run might be surprised at the value of some of the items, but it comes as little surprise to collectors. While not everyone might enjoy Grateful Dead music or memorabilia, almost everyone has heard of them. And fans are particularly loyal, even though the Grateful Dead was never a popular “mainstream” band and never quite achieved the fame of many of the same bands around during its heyday.
The Grateful Dead’s lead guitarist Jerry Garcia became a well-known name in music because of his talents and his outspokenness. The group formed in San Francisco in 1964 with their original name, The Warlocks, and continued on until Garcia’s death in 1995. Grateful dead posters from their early period, particularly concert posters from the 60s and 70s, are the most rare and valuable posters available from the band.
They drew their following because of their unique type of music, which combined several different styles, and their psychedelic leanings. Drug use in the 60s among those who went to see San Francisco bands was the rule, not the exception, and because some of the bands openly used drugs, it became a sort of culture among bands and fans, and a symbol for the counterculture of the time. The Grateful Dead embraced that psychedelic stoned attitude, and became popular among those who felt the same.
Grateful Dead posters are a visual delight for fans of the 60s counterculture and all things psychedelic. Often the concert posters are dominated by the large vintage lettering, and others often feature skeletons symbolizing, “The Dead,” as the band was often called by its fans. Some of the more valuable posters feature skeletons and roses, and one features a multi-colored skull wearing a top hat—a poster that can bring from $250 to $500 at an auction.
The band came out of the same area, and was part of the collective group of bands that became popular called the San Francisco Sound, with groups like the then Jefferson Airplane (later known as Jefferson Starship, and then just Starship) and Santana. One of their most widely known songs is probably “Touch of Gray.” Fans delighted in the way the band would play for the sheer love of it “jamming” like few other bands at the time did. Grateful Dead posters from those early concerts are harder to find because the focus was so much more on the music than memorabilia at the time, not many people worried about getting them or saving them.
If you want to find vintage Grateful Dead posters online, then auctions like eBay are an excellent source. Even posters with tiny tears around the edges and minor damage can be valuable, so don’t overlook those as collector pieces.

September 7th, 2009 — Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia, The Eagles Shirt
Band and concert shirts are one of the most popular forms of music-related collectibles, so the Eagles shirt is a highly collectible way to celebrate a band with an almost 40-year history. The Eagles formed in 1971, and have influenced rock music and the music industry since. Their Greatest Hits 1971-1775 has sold 29 million copies in the US, making it the best-selling album of all time in the United States. It was also the first album to hold the distinction of going platinum, according to the certification created in 1976 by the record industry. These songs are still played today alongside modern music.
The 4 albums following their Greatest Hits all went to #1, and they managed to outsell every other American band. Even though the band broke up in 1980 and didn’t reunite until 1994, they still sold 1.5 million copies of their records each year during that period. Their reunion in 1994 resulted in the album Hell Freezes Over which contained live songs and some studio tracks and unsurprisingly went to #1. They’ve been enjoying continued success ever since. The Eagles shirt, whether a vintage shirt from their early days or from their most recent appearances, is one of the most popular collectibles from this staple of American music history.
While the makeup of the band has changed over the years, current members are Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit. They released a new album in 2007 called Long Road Out of Eden, their first full studio album in 28 years. And according to lead man Don Henley, it will probably be the last album they ever release. Their world tour to support the album, which started in March 2008, offers the Eagles shirt alongside other band memorabilia, making it a great collectible especially if the album truly is the last they release.
Their most recent album and tour is unique, not just because it’s supposed to be the last, but in the manner the band released it to the public and the sales experiment it represented. It was set up so that during its first year of release in the United States it could only be purchased through the Eagles’ website, and Wal-Mart and Sam’s Clubs. Those living in other countries can purchase it through traditional means. The album opened at #1 in the US, UK, Norway, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Australia, and became their seventh release to hit platinum status at least 7 times over. Because it’s the last album, if for no other reason, the Eagles shirt commemorating Long Road Out of Eden will become a popular band collectible.
The Eagles shirt is typically easy to find in online in auctions. Concert shirts are more valuable than other shirts, even if they’re official Eagles merchandise. And always read the auction carefully to make sure you’re getting an authentic tour or band shirt, as opposed to one made by another manufacturer, in the condition you expect.
