If you have been thinking about starting a Entertainment memorabilia collection, then there are some very important guidelines you should keep in mind. Remember whether you collect for the investment, or for your own enjoyment. Regardless of which, you should still only buy that which you truly enjoy. While there are definitely trends in the varying collectors markets, it can be difficult to call any of them a sure bet when looking from an investors point of view. While many segments of the memorabilia market has shown growth, there are never any guarantees. By collecting that which you truly enjoy, you build yourself a bit of a defense against lack of market appreciation. If you collect things solely for worth, and they do not appreciate, you are left holding something you cannot even have a personal worth in.
Another general principle to consider when it comes to collecting memorabilia is that you should be attempting to buy the best pieces that are available within your price range. Although it may be tempting for you to consider acquiring as many items as you possibly can in the shortest possible period of time in order to get the ball rolling on your collection, you should be taking your time and trying to buy one really great piece every year rather than trying to buy a number of pieces that are more mediocre in terms of quality.
Quality versus quantity is something that should be your mantra when it comes to collecting memorabilia. In a period of ten years’ time, your collection is going to command a much greater level of respect if you contain just a few really exceptional pieces rather than a larger number of pieces that are merely average in nature.
When it comes to going shopping, one of the most important things that you are going to want to keep in mind is provenance. When you do some due diligence on the material’s source as well as the story that surrounds it, then you will be better able to protect yourself from being a victim of fraud, and there is plenty of fraud out there. There is a magazine known as Forbes Collector Magazine which reported in the year 2004 that as many as 75% to 90% of all autographs that are sold on eBay are fraudulent according to experts. You need to know your source, and you need to choose reputable auction houses and dealers when purchasing memorabilia to collect.
Many of the pieces of memorabilia that are being sold online come with a letter of authenticity, or a certificate of authenticity. Make sure that this is really a legitimate piece of evidence that your autograph is real, by tracing the history of the COA or LOA rather than just accepting it to be fact.

If you are a fan of John Wayne, and looking to start a John Wayne memorabilia collection, keep reading.
John Wayne memorabilia collections have always been a popular subject, but ever since his 100th birthday was celebrated on May 26 of 2007, the concept of beginning a John Wayne memorabilia collection has become even more popular for many people. John Wayne was born as Marion Robert Morrison, and he was a man that truly symbolized the concept of rugged manliness and masculinity. He has become an American icon that is here to stay. He is well known for having a truly distinctive voice, a unique walk and a staggering height at 6 feet and 4 inches. Western heroes such as John Wayne, “The Duke” simply do not exist anymore, and that is why creating a John Wayne memorabilia collection is so appealing to so many people.
There really are a wide variety of different collectibles out there that you can add to your John Wayne memorabilia collection if you are serious about beginning one. One example is a tribute replica John Wayne knife collection that has been made available by a company known as the Bradford Exchange. Every issue of these limited edition knife collectibles features a unique picture of The Duke on a porcelain blade that has been hard fired for durability. The handles of these knives have been adorned with an incredible bronzed three dimensional image of John Wayne, and his signature has even be added to add to the appeal of these blades.
There is another popular item worth adding to your John Wayne memorabilia collection, which is objects that are western themed in nature. Although they may not feature his image, western memorabilia makes an excellent addition to any and every John Wayne memorabilia collection, hands down.
Throughout his movie career, John Wayne did more than 50 years worth of movies, and he has been recognized by everyone as being the ideal type of Western hero. Another example of items that display his heroic acts are gorgeous porcelain collector’s plates that feature images of him in his movies serving as a hero in every way, shape or form. The purpose behind a John Wayne memorabilia collection is to showcase the man, his heroism, his iconic nature and the fact that he will never be forgotten as the iconic western hero figure.
If you are mad about John Wayne and looking for a way to commemorate your love of his movies, his attitude, his unique voice or that walk of his – The best way to do this is to create your very own John Wayne memorabilia collection where you can commemorate the Duke in your own special way.

October 13th, 2009 — Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia
There are many actors, actresses, movie scenes and other film moments that are memorable and popular years after they initially came into the limelight. As a result, many people collect film memorabilia as a way to relive their favorite movie moments, or to commemorate their favorite movie heroes. Although the collection of film memorabilia is not the most popular type of hobby out there, it brings great joy to many people and may bring great enjoyment to you as well.
There are many actors and actresses out there that have developed a significant following over the years. Look at Audrey Hepburn for example. She has a lot of film memorabilia that is well sought after, because people are always looking for things that they can keep and treasure that commemorate her film work and other things that we did with her life. Her image has become a pop culture icon, in fact. Many people continue to try to emulate her style and class even to this day. It should only make sense, then, why so many people are keen on Audrey Hepburn film memorabilia.
It is not enough to simply collect whatever film memorabilia you can get your hands on. What you should be doing is specifically collecting film memorabilia that relates to actors, actresses, movies, special moments in movies or other things that you are passionate about or otherwise care about. If you are collecting film memorabilia purely for resale value, then it may not matter what you buy and collect, but if you care about your collection, you need to only purchase the film memorabilia items that can mean something for you.
We used Audrey Hepburn as an example for film memorabilia, but if you are not passionate about her, or her style, or her movies, then obviously you would not have any special benefit from collecting her film memorabilia. On the other hand, if you are passionate about who she is and what she is all about, then you would benefit from having a collection of Audrey Hepburn film memorabilia. It really is this simple.
If you are looking for a new type of collection and you are passionate about a specific actor or actress, or if you have a favorite movie that you cannot get enough of, then film memorabilia might be a fun collection. For example, some people obsess about popular cult classic movies like Lord of the Rings and Star Wars, and as a result, they collect film memorabilia that relates to these movies. This is a great way to bring a part of the film home with you, and it is also a great way to invest in something that is only going to rise in value over time. Just make sure that you research the value of each piece of film memorabilia to make sure that you do not spend a lot of money on something that is not worthwhile.

September 20th, 2009 — Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Pin Up Posters, Vintage Pin-Up Posters
Pin up posters might not have the popularity today that they once did, but most people will immediately recognize some of the most popular pin up moments from the heyday of beautiful pin up models. Marilyn Monroe was a pin up queen in her day, and any collection of pin ups should feature her in at least a few pieces. Marilyn was a popular pin up girl in the 1950s, considered a sex symbol and the epitome of beauty and glamor. She was more than just an actress, though, acclaimed for a comic performance in Some Like it Hot and her rare dramatic turn in Bus Stop. She was an idol, an icon, and one of the Hollywood legends created during that period.
A collection of pin up posters represents a phase of US history that relied heavily on entertainment in movies and magazines. World War II made entertainment at home necessary to show the country that no matter what, there were good things to look forward to and keep morale from getting too low. Entertainment also served during this period to make things look as normal as possible at home, and try to give the illusion that though we were at war, everything was all right and would remain all right. It took the emphasis off the fact that people were dying elsewhere.
Pin up posters weren’t all about Marilyn, though, she was merely one of the best-known subjects. Betty Grable was featured on perhaps the most widely recognizable pin up of all time, popular during World War II. Almost everyone who’s been exposed to entertainment media in any form, even today, is probably familiar with the shot of Grable. She’s wearing a bathing suit and standing with her back to the camera, looking over her shoulder. The seductive backward look, the high heels and the hands on her hips were all provocative at the time, and helped cement her as a sex symbol and the woman of many soldiers’ dreams. Grable had what were considered to be perfect legs, insured for $1,000,000 by her movie studio. She was even reported to be Hugh Hefner’s inspiration for his Playboy empire.
Pin up posters didn’t always feature sex symbols like Monroe and Grable in photographs. Artwork was another popular pin up subjects. Alberto Vargas fro Peru created so many pin up of beautiful and voluptuous girls that the term Vargas girl is widely recognized and often is used to refer to a drawn or painted pin up girl.
A great place to find original and reproduction pin up posters is eBay, where you can often find the original magazine covers or intact magazines featuring photography, and even artwork by well known pin up artists like Vargas. Originals are rarely in great condition, but they’re still surprisingly available. Just be sure to clarify whether it’s an original or one of the reproductions that are so popular with fan of the genre who don’t want to spend the time or money necessary to track down an original.

September 20th, 2009 — Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Movie Scripts
If you love movies, one of the best collectible items you can find is an original autographed movie script. These are very rare in many cases, but when you do find one for your favorite movie there is always cause for celebration. This is a unique kind of collectible and there is a huge market for this type of movie memorabilia. If you are interested in purchasing movie scripts for your own collection, here are a few things you should know.
1. Has the script been authenticated?
Today, many movie scripts are available on the internet, and it doesn’t take much to find them and print them out. This has led to numerous problems with fraud, but if you are careful, you can avoid this. Ask the seller to provide you with a certificate of authenticity or a receipt that shows their original purchase. If they will not provide you with any form of proof as to whether or not the script is authentic, it’s best to find another seller.
2. How many cast members signed the script?
It’s a common practice to have numerous members of a cast sign the final script and this is usually done at the wrap party or at events after the filming has been completed. The more cast members that sign the movie script, the more likely it is to be valuable. This is particularly true if the script is quite old and most of the stars in it were very famous. While there is a niche market for small and unknown movie scripts, it is best to go with one that has several well known star’s autographs if you are looking for a valuable collectibles.
3. What is the overall condition of the script?
Don’t be surprised if the script is a little worn, especially if it is older. Paper does discolor slightly and there may be a few rips on the sheets of paper. This shouldn’t be a deal breaker unless the script is in very bad condition. If this is the case, you may be able to get a discount however, but generally, the script will not be worth as much if it does have a lot of damage.
4. What type of script is it?
Shooting scripts and director scripts are typically worth more than the first draft of a movie script, unless the author is very well known. Look for scripts that contain shooting notes for an interesting collectible. If you do come across a first edition script from a well known screenwriter, you’ll still be getting a very good value for your money.
Movie scripts are a unique collectible and many like to see how many they can collect. Whether you are seeking movie scripts from specific favorite movies, or you are trying to collect all of the scripts associated with an actor or director, by following the tips above, you can be assured that you will be getting an authentic script that is well worth the investment.

September 19th, 2009 — Lobby Cards, Movie Memorabilia
Most devoted film buffs and film memorabilia collectors have at least a small collection of lobby cards. These cards are released when a movie is released and serve as promotion must like film posters do. Most major releases also have a set of lobby cards released with it. In the UK, lobby cards are commonly called “Front of House” cards.
Lobby cards and film posters are designed to advertise and promote a newly released film. It’s not unusual for films to have several different film posters used in the advertising campaign, and these become valuable to collectors who love that particular film or collect cinema items in general. The posters are the ones you see inside and outside the theaters to advertise that the movie is coming soon or even playing currently inside. These images are used in the pressbooks, websites advertising the film, the DVD package, flyers and ads in newspapers, magazines and even books.
The difference between an official film poster and a poster put out by a third party is easy to spot. The film posters typically don’t just bear the main images and name of the film, but text at the bottom with some information like top-billed cast, the director, and sometimes the release date of the film. Lobby cards are considered tiny film posters. They’re usually released in sets of 8, with each card bearing a different scene from the movie. On occasion, the sets of lobby cards held 12 cards, or 6, but the typical number is 8. And releases from production companies who are having a difficult financial time sometimes came with no lobby card set at all. The 1986 film Manhunter by Michael Mann had no set of lobby cards produced in the United States, a great irony considering the film’s legacy. It was the forerunner of Silence of the Lambs, which won Oscars for both Anthony Hopkins and Jodi Foster and created one of the most memorable villains in cinematic history, Hannibal the Cannibal.
The value of lobby cards depends a great deal on the age of the cards and the film depicted, as well as their condition. While some older lobby cards carry a high price, so do some newer lobby cards that might have not been created in huge numbers. Often, lobby cards aren’t produced in great numbers and then the film will exceed the studio’s expectations, making it much more popular than they expected and creating a demand from film buffs and collectors for merchandise like the original film posters and lobby cards.
By the far the best way to buy lobby cards is in complete sets, though sometimes this can be difficult, especially in the case of very old films. Some old movies see their lobby cards sold individually for hundreds of dollars each. If you’re looking for lobby cards through online dealers and eBay, read the auctions carefully. Reprints are a big business for those who want the look of the classic lobby cards without caring whether or not they’re original.

September 17th, 2009 — Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Vintage Pin-Up Posters
Vintage pin-up posters represent a popular movie and magazine phase of US history. The ultimate pin-up girl was Marilyn Monroe, without whom no collection of vintage pin-ups would be complete. She was the pin-up queen of the 1950s, a sex symbol, and was considered one of the most beautiful and glamorous women of the time. Her comic performances were praised, and her dramatic turn in Bus Stop earned her critical acclaim. Marilyn won a Golden Globe for her performance in Some Like it Hot. But more than a model an actress, she was an icon of the time, and one of the most photographed women ever.
While Marilyn is probably the best known pin-up girl, a number of other models were among the most popular gracing posters and magazine covers. Betty Grable vintage pin-up posters represent the most popular pin-up of the World War II era. Even if you don’t know who she is, you’ve probably seen her famous bathing-suit pin-up where she’s standing with her back to the camera in high heels and a swimsuit, hands on hips, and looking over her shoulder to smile. Grable’s legs were considered the ideal proportion at the time, and were even insured by the movie studio for $1,000,000. Hugh Hefner cites Grable as his inspiration for starting the Playboy empire.
Celebrities who were thought of as sex symbols at the time like Monroe and Grable were often photographed for pin-ups, but artwork is another popular category of vintage pin-up posters. These were usually idealized images of feminine beauty. Many highly collectible pin-ups aren’t photographs at all, but artwork but some of the most well-known artists of the time. Original vintage prints are available in online auctions, and they’re surprisingly affordable, making them great for collectors of all means and budgets.
One of the most well-known pin-up artists is Alberto Vargas from Peru, who was probably the most prolific glamor artist of them all. He started out as an illustrator for Butterick Patterns and the Adelson Hat Company. In 1919, he was discovered by the Ziegfeld Follies while painting a store window. That lead to work painting in the Amsterdam theater and introduced him to the Follies’ stars, all of whom he painted over the next 12 years. Later he worked for Paramount, Warner Bros and MGM. His first calendar of American girls was put out by Esquire under the name Varga in 1940, at Esquire’s insistence, but after they split in 1946 he resorted to using his full name. He put out his own calendar, took lots of commercial work, and did over 150 paintings for Playboy, including two covers.
Many vintage pin-up posters are referred to as “Vargas” or “Vargas girls” when in fact they were created by other artists of the era. When purchasing any pin-up, be sure the description makes it clear that it’s an original vintage item and not a reproduction.

September 17th, 2009 — Celebrity, Celebrity Autographs, Grace Kelly, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Original Movie Memorabilia, Pictures, Princess Grace, autographs

Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco, is a film legend and one of the most recognizable names the world over. Her life seemed to be rather like a fairy tale, at least once she began acting. A leading lady who starred opposite huge stars like Jimmy Stewart, William Holden and Cary Grant, Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier and became a Princess, loved not only by her film fans but an entire country, and many across the world for the good deeds she did for her second country of citizenship.
An Academy Award winning actress, Grace Kelly had a special friendship with Alfred Hitchcock, who featured her in many of his movies. Dial M for Murder was the movie that really brought her to the public consciousness but she went on to dazzle in Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart and To Catch a Thief, as well as other classic hit movies.
She was 27 years old when she became a princess in 1956, after years of rumors about affairs with some of her leading men, none of which could be confirmed and none of which led to serious public affairs. She wed Prince Rainer of Monaco and became known as Her Serene Highness, the Princess of Monaco, officially, but was known for the rest of her life simply as Princess Grace.
She wanted to return to acting when Hitchcock offered her a role in his film Marnie, but the people of Monaco and the other royalty rebelled against the idea of their princess acting in American films. Rainer had even gone so far, long before that, to forbid her films to be screened in his country. Albert II, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco currently, is the son of Rainer and Grace Kelly.
She was born in Philadelphia in 1929, and seemed to know she was destined to be a star when she was young. Whether or not she predicted she’d grow up to be a princess isn’t known. As Princess of Monaco, she did work to help orphans, and she helped improve the art culture in Monaco. She also spoke out about the importance of breastfeeding.
Grace Kelly also stood up against racism by storming out of New York’s Stork Club in 1951 when Josephine Baker was refused entrance. She left with Baker’s party and never returned to the club. She remained a friend to Baker throughout her life, helped her before she’d made her comeback in the 70s, and even arranged for her burial in Monaco after her death.
Anyone who loves classic films is no doubt familiar with Grace Kelly and her work. She is the first actress to appear on a US postage stamp, and a commemorative Euro from Monaco features her profile. Stamps, coins, films and other memorabilia have value to a Grace Kelly fan, whether it was her acting talent that impressed a collector to want to surround themselves with items from her era, or her whirlwind and fairytale-like rise to become Monaco’s beloved Princess Grace.

Andy Warhol paintings today are housed in museums, owned by private collectors and released as prints for public consumption. He was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928. Though he died in 1987 from complications after gall bladder surgery, his name is still well known today. He’s known as the father of Pop Art, an artistic movement that began to take shape in the 1960s. He also published books and made dozens of short homoerotic films that were often premiered in gay movie theaters.
The famous phrase “15 minutes of fame” was coined by Warhol, who himself was fascinated by celebrities and pop culture. He began his career in the 1960s as a commercial artist and illustrator, and met with resistance when he attempted a career as a serious artist because of his vast commercial work. When his artwork provided the debut of pop art on the West Coast in 1962 in LA, the Andy Warhol paintings on display featured Campbell’s Soup cans, dollars bills, Coke bottles and his very famous brightly-colored portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol paintings often depicted celebrities like Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and were less paintings than reproductions of their photos in almost Day-Glo colors. His artwork was produced via silk-screening which allowed for mass-production, and allowed anyone in his studio, which he called The Factory, to be able to create it.
Andy Warhol paintings became popular very quickly, but they were also controversial because of the method he used to make them and their subject matter. Some of his artwork featured stylized pictures taken right from the headlines, like a picture of a mushroom cloud and civil rights protesters being attacked by police dogs. Anything in American pop culture was fair game for Warhol’s analysis.
With the rise in popularity of Andy Warhol paintings came public discussions about whether or not pop art was really art at all. And two days before Robert Kennedy’s assassination, one of Warhol’s “factory” workers shot him and an art critic at his studio. Warhol nearly died as a result, and few doubt that the shooting affected his life and work from then on.
In the 1970s, Andy Warhol paintings were often of pop culture celebrities like Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Liza Minelli. His work became more popular again in the 1980s even as it was more openly criticized as being shallow and without depth or a true understanding of its subject.
Andy Warhol paintings, though, as many critics realize now, were meant to be not just pieces of art but an accurate reflection of the “surface” pop culture, with what appeared to be merely surface treatments of its subjects. He was also criticized for being in the “business” of art. But he described making money as art, and good business as the best art of all.
Andy Warhol paintings cost thousands of dollars, but his books, prints of his paintings, his avant-garde short films and other memorabilia can be found online in auctions and specialty shops.

September 14th, 2009 — Collector Plates, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia
One of the most common types of memorabilia for the entertainment world are collector plates. These decorative items adorn the homes of many, but they may not be aware of just how valuable these small collectibles are. While there are plenty of collector plates that have only sentimental value, you can find some that are actually worth quite a lot of money.
1. Gone With the Wind
This much loved movie produced numerous memorabilia items and collector plates are very valuable. Look for plates that were produced back when the film was released. Although you can find brand new ones today, they are not as valuable as the limited editions that were produced in 1939. The most valuable collector plates will be in perfect condition and may also contain a matching stand.
2. The Wizard of Oz Collector Plates
It is ironic that two of the most collectible types of plates are dedicated to movies that were released in the same year. The Wizard of Oz collectible plates are also incredibly valuable, especially if you can find originals that were put out right after the movie was released. These may be a bit old and the colors may have faded a bit, but many of these plates will sell for more than a few hundred dollars, if not even more, at auction.
3. Sports Heroes
Collectible plates that are dedicated to big sport’s heroes are also very popular and may hold extra value. These plates are usually released at the height of an athlete’s career or right after they accomplish something extraordinary. It is best to try to get these when they are first produced, as later issues may not be as valuable. There are thousands of different collectible plates for sports heroes and chances are you’ll be able to find the one you admire the most.
4. Disney Collector Plates
Once again, the older the collector plate, the more valuable it will be. This is certainly true of Disney plates and you can actually find many incredible deals, if you pay attention. Look for plates that were produced during the 1930’s to the 1950’s for the most valuable items. Today’s plates however may be worth something in the future, so it is best to take good care of them now.
If you are interested in getting into collector plates, there are some great resources to find them. The first place to look is at a local flea market, or even a garage sale. You’ll be surprised at just how many top dollar collector plates are actually discovered this way. Your next option is to visit an antique dealer, as they frequently carry these popular items.
You can also find great collector plates at online auction sites and the variety is usually quite large. However, you’ll need to make sure that the plate comes with a certificate of authenticity, especially since you won’t be able to examine the plate in person, before you make your purchase. This will help to ensure that you are getting an actual collector’s item.
