Right now, collecting rare memorabilia is on the rise, and this particular practice gains even more attention when it comes to collecting rare memorabilia that once belonged to a great singer, actor or actress or some other famous individual that has recently or even not so recently passed away. Why this is so important is because when somebody who is famous passes away, it makes the already rare memorabilia surrounding that person even rarer, since items are now harder to come by and can no longer be produced.
There are a number of different pieces of rare memorabilia that you can collect, such as autographed photographs, autographed pieces of memorabilia, apparel, signed CDs and discs, posters, props and instruments from the stage of a show, signed set lists, props from television shows and movies and so on and so forth. There are really an endless variety of different pieces of rare memorabilia out there – What makes them so rare is whether or not it is easy to find more.
Once a celebrity has passed away, the memorabilia that is signed by them becomes much rarer because no more autographs can be obtained. This is something that you are going to want to consider if you are collecting rare memorabilia. As pieces becoming increasingly rare, they are going to be more expensive and harder to find. If you can get your hands on them as they become rarer, then you will be the one profiting from their worth, rather than being the one struggling to find the pieces of rare memorabilia that you are looking for.
There are a lot of websites on the internet that are offering authentic collections of rare memorabilia pieces from different famous people all throughout the world and the media. It is important when shopping for rare memorabilia that you are cautious of scammers and people that are trying to take your hard earned money. Make sure that any rare memorabilia that you buy is authentic by any possible means before you make the purchase so that you can protect yourself from possibly being ripped off.
There is a large online market for rare memorabilia, just make sure that you are buying legitimate rare memorabilia rather than knock-offs. When you find collectible rare memorabilia online, you should be dealing with authentic dealers that you can trust, or websites where you are protected such as eBay, where if you are ripped off you can get your money back through insurance. It is really important that you protect yourself, because buying a piece of rare memorabilia can be really rewarding, but getting ripped off is anything but.

If you are looking for a great collector’s item that is in high demand, one of the hottest items you can find are Marilyn Monroe pictures. These photographs are always popular, but you may not always be getting the real thing. Here are some tips to help you get the best Marilyn Monroe pictures that are authentic. Make a smart investment be an informed buyer.
-
Certified Authentication
Ask for a certificate. A reliable seller that has an actual photo of Marilyn Monroe will typically be willing to provide you with at least some form of authentication. Unless they are the original owner of the picture or took it on their own, somewhere along the line there should have been a certificate issued. While not having a certificate does not mean that the item is fake, it should give you pause and make you rethink the purchase a bit.
-
Reasearch
See how many identical Marilyn Monroe pictures there are. Many times, someone will claim to have an authentic, only of it’s kind of photo, but with a little research you can determine on your own if that claim is valid. Do a photo search on Google, and see if you can find an identical picture. If you can, chances are the picture being sold is not authentic or at the very least, is not an original.
-
Color Over Black and White
Look for color Marilyn Monroe pictures. By far, the pictures that are the most valuable for Marilyn are the ones that are in full color. They are more expensive, but you are getting more value for your money. However, black and white photos can also bring in a high asking price, especially if they are originals or from a private collection.
-
Careful With Sigantures
Be wary of signatures. While there are many authentic Marilyn Monroe photos out there that are indeed signed, there are a lot more reproductions. If you do find a seller with one of these and a certificate, definitely take advantage of the deal. These are incredibly rare. Most likely however, you will be dealing with a reproduction and the picture may actually be worthless.
-
Buyer Beware
If the deal seems to good to be true, it probably is. If someone is claiming to have an authentic Marilyn Monroe picture and they are selling it for a pittance, chances are it is not an authentic original. Steer clear of these deals and save your money for the collectibles that are truly valuable.
There is nothing wrong with buying a reproduction of a Marilyn Monroe picture, especially if you are aware of it. In most cases, a photo like this is bought only to enhance a private collection and not for an investment. However, if you are looking for a picture as an investment, you do need to do plenty of research to make sure that you are getting a good deal before you put your money on the table.
With care and effort, you can find a great original Marilyn Monroe picture that will enhance your personal collection and provide you with a nice little investment.

September 17th, 2009 — Celebrity, Celebrity Autographs, Grace Kelly, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, Original Movie Memorabilia, Pictures, Princess Grace, autographs

Grace Kelly, who became Princess Grace of Monaco, is a film legend and one of the most recognizable names the world over. Her life seemed to be rather like a fairy tale, at least once she began acting. A leading lady who starred opposite huge stars like Jimmy Stewart, William Holden and Cary Grant, Kelly married Monaco’s Prince Rainier and became a Princess, loved not only by her film fans but an entire country, and many across the world for the good deeds she did for her second country of citizenship.
An Academy Award winning actress, Grace Kelly had a special friendship with Alfred Hitchcock, who featured her in many of his movies. Dial M for Murder was the movie that really brought her to the public consciousness but she went on to dazzle in Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart and To Catch a Thief, as well as other classic hit movies.
She was 27 years old when she became a princess in 1956, after years of rumors about affairs with some of her leading men, none of which could be confirmed and none of which led to serious public affairs. She wed Prince Rainer of Monaco and became known as Her Serene Highness, the Princess of Monaco, officially, but was known for the rest of her life simply as Princess Grace.
She wanted to return to acting when Hitchcock offered her a role in his film Marnie, but the people of Monaco and the other royalty rebelled against the idea of their princess acting in American films. Rainer had even gone so far, long before that, to forbid her films to be screened in his country. Albert II, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco currently, is the son of Rainer and Grace Kelly.
She was born in Philadelphia in 1929, and seemed to know she was destined to be a star when she was young. Whether or not she predicted she’d grow up to be a princess isn’t known. As Princess of Monaco, she did work to help orphans, and she helped improve the art culture in Monaco. She also spoke out about the importance of breastfeeding.
Grace Kelly also stood up against racism by storming out of New York’s Stork Club in 1951 when Josephine Baker was refused entrance. She left with Baker’s party and never returned to the club. She remained a friend to Baker throughout her life, helped her before she’d made her comeback in the 70s, and even arranged for her burial in Monaco after her death.
Anyone who loves classic films is no doubt familiar with Grace Kelly and her work. She is the first actress to appear on a US postage stamp, and a commemorative Euro from Monaco features her profile. Stamps, coins, films and other memorabilia have value to a Grace Kelly fan, whether it was her acting talent that impressed a collector to want to surround themselves with items from her era, or her whirlwind and fairytale-like rise to become Monaco’s beloved Princess Grace.

September 15th, 2009 — Bo Diddley, Celebrity, Celebrity Autographs, Guitars, Memorabilia, Music Memorabilia

Bo Diddley is a legend, both for his guitar playing and his role as one of the first influences in modern rock ‘n roll. Born Ellas Othas Bates in Mississippi in 1928, he later became known as the “originator” because he was one of the first to move from playing the blues to playing rock ‘n roll. He started out playing violin and trombone in his church’s orchestra, but became captivated by the guitar and rhythmic gospel music.
Inspired by the music of John Lee Hooker, he started playing the music he loved with his friends, sometimes performing on street corners or for tips in night spots. He became a regular at the same club where Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker regularly performed in 1951 in Chicago. Then in 1954, he put together a band and made some demo recordings. One of those songs, Bo Diddley, became a #1 hit R & B single in 1955.
The Bo Diddley beat was a distinctive rhythm he often used in his music, a rumba-like beat he became known for. He was also recognized for his innovations with the guitar. His music often followed the same chord throughout the song, but had unusual rhythms and changes that made it dynamic. He often played an unusual looking guitar shaped like a box that he built himself in 1958. He also played the violin on some of his recordings. The songs he wrote were often witty takes or humorous versions of folk music.
When he appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1955, Bo Diddley got himself banned from ever appearing again by going against the show’s wishes. He had been asked to sing a Merle Travis song, but instead sang his hit “Bo Diddley.” Despite Ed Sullivan’s anger and pronouncement that he wouldn’t last six months, Diddley had hit after hit through the 50s and 60s, and released 11 albums.
Bo Diddley wasn’t just a pioneer in musical styles or types of guitar, but in other areas, too. He was one of the first musicians to set up his own recording studio at his home. And he was also one of the first men to have women in his band. A woman led his band for the last 25 years he performed, in fact.
He went on to perform with well known acts, and receive numerous awards and distinctions from the musical community and from his fans. Bo Diddley appeared in a small part in the 1983 film Trading Places, and made commercials for Nike. His songs have been covered by a variety of acts over the years, and his birthplace has even been given a Mississippi Blues Trail historical marker to honor his contribution to the art form.
He’s only been gone since June, 2008, so his contributions to musical world continued until recently, even though he was less active in the months and years leading up to his death. eBay is a wonderful place to find Bo Diddley memorabilia like old vinyl albums and recordings.

Andy Warhol paintings today are housed in museums, owned by private collectors and released as prints for public consumption. He was born Andrew Warhola in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1928. Though he died in 1987 from complications after gall bladder surgery, his name is still well known today. He’s known as the father of Pop Art, an artistic movement that began to take shape in the 1960s. He also published books and made dozens of short homoerotic films that were often premiered in gay movie theaters.
The famous phrase “15 minutes of fame” was coined by Warhol, who himself was fascinated by celebrities and pop culture. He began his career in the 1960s as a commercial artist and illustrator, and met with resistance when he attempted a career as a serious artist because of his vast commercial work. When his artwork provided the debut of pop art on the West Coast in 1962 in LA, the Andy Warhol paintings on display featured Campbell’s Soup cans, dollars bills, Coke bottles and his very famous brightly-colored portrayal of Marilyn Monroe.
Andy Warhol paintings often depicted celebrities like Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor, and were less paintings than reproductions of their photos in almost Day-Glo colors. His artwork was produced via silk-screening which allowed for mass-production, and allowed anyone in his studio, which he called The Factory, to be able to create it.
Andy Warhol paintings became popular very quickly, but they were also controversial because of the method he used to make them and their subject matter. Some of his artwork featured stylized pictures taken right from the headlines, like a picture of a mushroom cloud and civil rights protesters being attacked by police dogs. Anything in American pop culture was fair game for Warhol’s analysis.
With the rise in popularity of Andy Warhol paintings came public discussions about whether or not pop art was really art at all. And two days before Robert Kennedy’s assassination, one of Warhol’s “factory” workers shot him and an art critic at his studio. Warhol nearly died as a result, and few doubt that the shooting affected his life and work from then on.
In the 1970s, Andy Warhol paintings were often of pop culture celebrities like Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, John Lennon and Liza Minelli. His work became more popular again in the 1980s even as it was more openly criticized as being shallow and without depth or a true understanding of its subject.
Andy Warhol paintings, though, as many critics realize now, were meant to be not just pieces of art but an accurate reflection of the “surface” pop culture, with what appeared to be merely surface treatments of its subjects. He was also criticized for being in the “business” of art. But he described making money as art, and good business as the best art of all.
Andy Warhol paintings cost thousands of dollars, but his books, prints of his paintings, his avant-garde short films and other memorabilia can be found online in auctions and specialty shops.

September 13th, 2009 — Celebrity, Movie Memorabilia, Roy Rogers Toys
Roy Rogers toys weren’t just the popular playthings of a generation who viewed Roy as an authentic cowboy and a real American hero, they’re a representation of an entire generation. They stand today as an example of mid-20th century culture and one of the few stars America has even known who managed to live without scandal his entire life.
While Western toys were popular before Roy Rogers was a household name, once he became an icon in the 1940s, Roy Rogers toys dominated the marketplace. Some of the most popular toys branded with his name were Western-style cap guns that kids used to play “cowboys and Indians.” While cap guns were already a popular item, a Roy Rogers cap gun held special meaning because it was associated with Rogers, and somehow had to have belonged to one of the good guys.
Leonard Slye started his career when he moved to California at age 18 to become a singer. After four years of struggling he formed the group Sons of the Pioneers and found success. The songs were sparse and Western, like “Cool Water” and “Tumbling Tumbleweeds,” and America began a love affair with Rogers that lasted until his death in 1998 and beyond. His big movie break came while working on a movie with Gene Autry, the widest known cowboy star of the day, who had a dispute on the movie set and walked off. It was then that Slye’s name was changed to Roy Rogers (after Will Rogers), he was given Autry’s part, and he became a movie sensation. By the early 1940s, Rogers was so popular that Roy Rogers toys began flying off the shelves.
When he married actress Dale Evans in 1945, they formed Hollywood’s first power couple, becoming a household name together and performing a popular radio show in the 1950s that featured Western actor Gaby Hayes and two of the most popular animals in the world, Roy’s horse Trigger and his dog Bullet. Roy was seen as an American hero and idol, with Roy Rogers toys and other items becoming one of the earliest merchandising successes in the world. Many were available from cap guns to action figures, lunchboxes, hats, cowboy gear, even books, comic books and a popular comic strip were part of the extensive merchandising surrounding Rogers.
Roy and Dale were known as “King of the Cowboys” and “Queen of the West,” and even those not familiar with them today have probably heard their theme song, “Happy Trails (to you).” Many people who collect Western memorabilia and vintage toys look for Roy Rogers toys, but because of his popularity it’s rare to find mint or unopened toys. Most were well-played-with when they were new, so the important thing is to make sure it’s an authentic Roy Rogers brand toy, and to find out whether or not it has ever been broken and repaired. Online auctions are probably the easiest place to find the toys as close to their original condition as possible.

September 11th, 2009 — Celebrity, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia, The Three Stooges

The Three Stooges, years after they made their last film together, are still wildly popular with both adults and children alike. Their films are available on DVD and appear on television, they’re referenced in pop culture, and even have music dedicated to them, like the popular song The Curly Shuffle. The last surviving Stooge, Curly Joe DeRita, died in 1993.
Curly Joe was also the last Stooge to join the act that that began with Moe Howard and his brother Shemp, and performer Larry Fine, in 1925. The three performed as part of a vaudeville act called “Ted Healy and His Stooges.” They weren’t called the Three Stooges until they broke out on their own, years later. They played Healy’s bumbling assistants who were abused each time they interrupted Healy’s performances, which was the point of the act.
In 1930, the three Stooges appeared in their first film, Soup to Nuts. Though the film wasn’t a commercial success, the trio was offered a contract without Healy. Healy complained, stating that they were his employees so the contract offer was withdrawn. The three left Healy once they learned what he had done, and went off to form their own traveling act. Later, Moe and Healy came to an agreement and were booked together again, but Shemp reportedly didn’t like Healey’s methods, so he left the act.
Moe suggested another brother to fill Shemp’s shoes, the youngest of the 5 Howard brothers, Jerry, who would become Curly. In 1933, Healy and the boys were given a contract by MGM where they appeared in shorts and films. In 1934, they split with Healy for the same reasons Shemp had left the act to find work on his own a year before. It was 1934 when the name The Three Stooges stuck. They performed in short subjects for Columbia, a total of 190 in all, and 5 feature films.
Curly’s health took a turn for the worse in 1945, thanks to overeating and heavy drinking, and in 1946 he suffered from a stroke that forced him to retire. Shemp came back as part of The Three Stooges, and his third film actually featured a cameo from Curly. Hold That Lion! became the only film to feature the four original Stooges, because of that brief appearance. Shemp was supposed to return only temporarily, but in 1952, Curly died at the age of 48.
Shemp appeared with The Three Stooges in 73 short films and a comedy, then in 1955 Shemp died of a sudden heart attack at age 60, only 3 years after Curly’s death. Joe Besser replaced Shemp for two years, but didn’t want to travel, so the last Stooge, Curly Joe DeRita joined Moe and Larry in 1959 to continue the act. Once Larry suffered a stroke in 1970, the Stooges never performed again.
Three Stooges movies, especially some of their less-aired shorts, are great Stooge collectibles that can be found on eBay, as well as candid shots of the original Howard brothers and longtime Stooge Larry Fine.

September 11th, 2009 — Bruce Lee Movies, Celebrity, Memorabilia, Movie Memorabilia
Bruce Lee is a revered name in the martial arts community, and Bruce Lee movies are classics among action and martial arts fans. Lee was more than actor, he actually developed a martial art form called Jeet Kune Do, and popularized the sport in various films and television appearances in the 1960s and 1970s. Born in California in 1940 in both the Year of the Dragon and the hour of the dragon, according the Chinese Zodiac, Lee ended up being raised in Hong Kong when the family moved back to China when Lee was 3 months old. But Bruce was sent back to the United States when he was 18 because he’d recently been in trouble after getting into a fight. He held two small boxing championships at the time. He met his wife at the University of Washington and married her in 1964.
They had two children, Brandon born in 1965 and Shannon born in 1969. Both became actors like their father. Shannon retired from acting after some low-budget film appearances in the mid 90s, and Brandon Lee, perhaps at the peak of his popularity, died during the filming of his film The Crow at the age of only 28. The parallels between his death and his father were a source of interest and speculation at the time, because Bruce Lee died young as well, at age 33. And of all the Bruce Lee movies, the final one was completed after his death, just as Brandon’s movie, The Crow, had to be finished.
The first Bruce Lee movies were actually black-and-white short films he appeared in while very young. By age 18, he’d appeared in 20 films. His early introduction to the world of acting and films was thanks to his father, Hoi-Cheun, who was a famous opera star in China.
After a demonstration in a Karate Tournament in 1964, he impressed the other martial artists and ended up landing small roles on television in shows like Batman. He went on to appear in films and television shows, even pitching his own show called The Warrior which many, including Lee, believed was later changed to become the popular series Kung Fu with David Carradine. Lee even auditioned for the lead role, but the studios didn’t believe that the viewing public would be won over by a Chinese lead actor. Upset at his treatment in the US, the first Bruce Lee movies were made in Hong Kong.
Bruce Lee went back to Hong Kong and became a box office sensation, going on to write, direct and choreograph. He gave Chuck Norris his start in films by casting him in Way of the Dragon and fighting him a legendary martial arts sequence. Bruce Lee movies and his martial arts philosophies went on to change the way Kung Fu and all of China were viewed in the west. His movies are available on DVD and still enjoyed today, and he is still seen as one of the most amazing martial artists that ever lived.

September 10th, 2009 — Celebrity, Celebrity Autographs, Original Autographs, autographs
If you are seeking celebrity autographs, there are a few options available to you. For some however, if you don’t live where there are a lot of celebrities, it can be a little difficult to get the celebrity autographs you want. However, there are still quite a few options that are available, even if your favorite stars haven’t been with us for many years. Here’s how you can find the best autographs.
1. Professional Dealers
This is probably the easiest way to get celebrity autographs. They are typically found in towns like Los Angeles and New York City, where there is a high concentration of stars. These specialty stores sell merchandise as well as photos that have been signed by your favorite stars. When you’re in a hurry or looking for a popular autograph, this is probably the best way to get one. You may need to pay a bit more however, since many of these dealers do charge premium prices.
2. Online Auctions
This option works best for those that do not live in an area where celebrity autographs are easily found. You will have access to the best dealers online as well as regular people that are trying to monetize their personal collection. If you are looking for a rare celebrity autograph, or if you just like to have a wide selection, this is the best option for you. Prices for autographs at online auctions do vary, and the most popular stars will usually bring the highest prices. However, there are exceptions to every rule and with careful shopping, you can find a great deal.
3. Get one on your own
This option works best for those that live in Los Angeles or New York, or have access to a steady stream of celebrities. However, you can get one on your own even in your own town, if there is a special book signing or if you just happen to bump into a star on the street. Most are more than willing to give you an autograph, but it is important to remember that they are people too and like their privacy. Always be polite if you approach a celebrity for their autograph. In most cases, you will be able to get one for free, so this is a great option if you are on a budget.
4. Auction Houses
If you are seeking very rare celebrity autographs from stars like Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, or even Elvis, the best place to look would be at a professional auction house such as Sotheby’s. These auction houses help private clients with their collections and this is the best way to get a really valuable autograph. Be prepared to spend quite a bit more for these, but you will have the added benefit of knowing that the resale value will be quite high.
These are just a few ideas to get you started on your hunt for celebrity autographs. If all else fails, and the star is living, you can always write to their agent to ask for one. Be advised however, that most will be reprints and not originals if you do decide to go this route.
