Still, it isn't the machine crafted lace crochet doilies that capture attention, but rather the stunning handmade antiques that took the textiles and linen world by storm when they first found their way onto table tops and other surfaces within the home. The original lace and crochet doilies were small, ornamental mats that were crafted from embroidery, crochet, lacework or tatting. Before they found their way onto surfaces as ornamental mats, they were popular as small handmade napkins or handkerchiefs used chiefly during dessert courses at dinner time.

 

Because many of the crafting styles that led to the hand creation of these textiles and linens and other lacework antiques are no longer being widely practices, antique lace and crochet doilies are highly sought after as a tribute to what crafters used to be capable of accomplishing. Creating tiny knot work in intricate lace patterns was a true feat, and the results are always a sight to see which is why even today doilies are popular, even though many modern day versions are simply crafted from paper.
