When it comes to collecting antiques, textiles, linens and fabrics may not seem like one of the most exciting collections, simply because fabric can easily be found today just as in the past. However, when it comes to fabric, the versions that are considered to be antiques are much different in composition, style and color. Fabric and linens of the past were usually of a much stronger quality, because these fabrics were not mass produced nearly as much as today. The population was much smaller then, and less garments and blankets were needed back then, so fabric was not as widely produced or distributed. For this reason, many linens and textiles or other types of fabric were of a much better quality, and are well worth seeking out now.

There are a number of fabric styles that were popular in the past and can be found in vintage or antique form. Some of these fabric options include chenille, cotton, wool, silk, linen, damask and velvet. While most of these types of fabrics are still being produced today, some will say that the quality has become much less because fabrics must be mass produced in order to keep up with demand. Basic cotton prints are mixed with other fabric blends to create hybrid fabrics, most of which are not very durable and easily become tattered. Vintage cotton or wool on the other hand is sturdy and designed to withstand the elements rather well.
If you have a passion for sewing, vintage fabric and other textile and linen antiques would make an excellent collection to begin. If you are not interested in sewing on the other hand, fabric antiques can be found in many other forms including bed sheets and linens, vintage or antique clothing, quilts, tapestry fabric and so on.
