When it comes to collecting antiques that tell a story, textiles and linens are an excellent avenue to pursue, especially when it comes to embroidery. Embroidery is a needlecraft similar to hand sewing that involves using colored threads to design an image on linens and other textiles. Embroidery has been used for ages as a means of customizing linens, and it was not unheard of to hand embroider a name or initials on a handkerchief, or to customize a baby blanket with the boy or girls' name and date or birth. Embroidery is still an extremely popular means of customization in modern times, especially now that embroidery can be completed by machines.

Embroidery in the past, however, was completely done by hand. There are numerous different styles and forms of embroidery, some of which involve creating simple outlines or simple single lines, and other which involve creating intricate and unique full color images. A few dips of the thread and needle into the textiles and linens could create unique little threaded flowers; spell out words and phrases, or a lot more.
Because embroidery laden textiles and linens tell stories about the people that once owned them, they make truly excellent antiques to collect. If you are fond of needlecrafts, modern day embroidery or even sewing, there is a lot that you can take away from collecting embroidery antiques. There are many different textiles, linens and other antiques that bear embroidery, including placemats, baby blankets, knife and fork bags, table runners, handkerchiefs and a lot more.
