Marlon Brando Films

If you ask many people to name the greatest films of all time, many will name Marlon Brando films. He’s considered the greatest actor of all time by many movie fans and critics alike. Though he lived to be 80 years old and barely resembled his sex-symbol persona for many years before his death, most people remember him as the young rebel in On the Waterfront, as the head of the Corleone family in The Godfather, or as hard-nosed Kurtz who liked to play Wagner when attacking in Apocalypse Now.

His career lasted over 50 years and included dozens of films, many of them cinematic classics. He was one of America’s first method actors, spending a month in bed to prepare for a role as a paraplegic. Early in his career he was voted Broadway’s most promising young actor, then landed the role of Stanley Kowalski, a role that would start his stellar career, in A Streetcar Named Desire. He went from doing the stage play to eventually the movie, making Streetcar one of the first and most well-known Marlon Brando films.

The Marlon Brando films Streetcar, Viva Zapata!, Julius Caesar and On the Waterfront all had him nominated for an Oscar for his performances, and he won for his performance in On the Waterfront. After that, his career seemed to decline. Some believe that while his film choice did seem erratic, his activism and left leanings contributed more to his problems that the movies he chose. He was blacklisted from large projects because he was an active support of the Black Panthers, a group that aggressively fought for black rights, and he was active in his support of Native American equality as well.

Of all the Marlon Brando films, The Godfather is probably the most well known and still watched today. He won an Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of the Godfather in this movie, but sent a Native American rights activist Sacheen Littlefeather in full Indian dress, not to accept the award for him, but to explain that he was refusing the award due to the film industry’s dismal portrayals of Native Americans in film and on television. He was the second person, after George C. Scott’s refusal to accept his Oscar for Patton, and the last, to refuse the Best Actor Oscar.

Marlon Brando films after The Godfather included Superman, in which he had a cameo as the Man of Steel’s father, and his role as unstable Kurtz in Apocalypse Now. After that role, in which he was much heavier than the studio and filmmaker had expected him to be, his rising weight began to make it difficult for him to find roles. He’d always had a reputation as a difficult actor, but eventually his weight ballooned to 300 pounds and limited his choice of parts. Marlon Brando collectibles include his films, most of which are available on DVD, Hollywood magazines from the 1960s, and ticket stubs from his Broadway performance and films, which can often be found in online auctions.
