February 9th, 2012 — Wine Storage
Temperature is an unseen factor when it comes to collecting vintage red wine, and so it is a factor that is often neglected. Unfortunately, it plays a very, very large and significant role in bringing out the best or the worst in a bottle of wine, both when it comes to storing wine and also serving it.
Storing Vintage Red Wine
Sadly, many excellent vintage red wine collections are damaged because of moisture and temperature instability. High temperatures can cause a bottle of wine to age more quickly than it is meant to, losing its balance and its flavor in the process. When it is chilled to be too cold, wine can also lose its aromas and its flavors. You need to take care to keep your vintage red wine away from sunlight as well as heat exposure by storing your bottles in wine fridges, wine cellars or rooms that are temperature controlled. If there is a wide fluctuation in the temperature then you could end up damaging not only the wine, but the cork protecting the wine as well.
The ideal range of vintage red wine temperature should be between 50 degrees and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, which translate to 10 degrees to 16 degrees Celsius. White wines, on the other hand, can be stored at lower temperature ranges climbing down as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. There are different storage and serving temperatures for different types of wine and so it is important to know what your collection consists of so that you can set your wine fridges or wine cellar thermostats to the proper temperature and keep your vintage red wine and other types of wine in excellent condition while you age them.
- If you have a wine collection and you do not want to ruin it, then it would be well worthwhile for you to invest in the purchase of a wine fridge or possibly a wine cellar to keep your vintage red wine at the right temperatures.
- Alternatively, you might be able to rent wine storage service from a local winery or wine store if you cannot store your wines at home.
- Never leave a bottle of any type of wine in your freezer. When you freeze wine, it will expand, and subsequently the bottle of wine will explode inside of your freezer.
- It is really easy for a vintage red wine label to become ruined in an environment that is too humid. To keep your wine labels safe you are going to want to put plastic wine protectors on the labels to keep them safer in all temperatures and levels of humidity.

December 26th, 2011 — wine tasting
Wines tasting is something that can essentially be divided into two different categories, people that do it to be professional and people that do it for the purpose of leisure. When it comes to professional tasting, the taster has to be able to evaluate the wine thoroughly, addressing a wide variety of different things including the origin of the wine and whether or not the wine is going to be able to increase in its value if it is cellared or sold, or whether it should simply be drunk right off the shelf.
On the other hand, leisurely wines tasting is about tasting purely for the purpose of pleasure. The wine should be chilled as a white wine or otherwise in its optimum state of condition. Tasting for pleasure is about educational experiences above all else.
Top Conditions - You are going to want to make sure that the wine is consumed in the best conditions because wine tastes the greatest when served in the right condition. The condition should include the right temperature, the right state of your palate and even the right time of day. The best temperature for wine serving is generally 20 degrees Celsius.
Good Health - If you are sick, then you are not going to get the full enjoyment out of the wine. If any of your senses are being impeded then you are not going to taste the wine properly, which is just a waste of a good bottle of wine. Make sure that you are healthy before tasting wine.
Senses Working Together - To have the best possible tasting experience for wines, you are going to want to make sure that your smell, your sight and your taste are all in the best most optimum condition and that they are all tuned into focusing on how the wine is impacting them during the wines tasting. The eyes should play a role in the wine tasting just as much as the mouth, because looking at the wine’s color and texture is just as important as smelling it and tasting it, especially in understanding the subtle differences from bottle to bottle.
What should I be looking for?
When it comes to wines tasting, you should know that a good wine is either going to have an acidic or a sour taste to it. Often times this is well balanced with an amount of sweetness. If you want to make sure that a wine is not off, you should be looking for a smell or a taste of vinegar. If the wine has a smell that reminds you of vinegar, or if you taste it and it has this kind of flavor to it, then it likely is no longer good. Proper wine storage can prevent this from happening, but sometimes wine simply does not last as it was meant to.

December 19th, 2011 — Wine Collecting
As long ago as in the 1700s, it was recognized that wine had a powerful hold on people, and that great friendships could spring from good wine. The art of wine and wine collecting has a truly long and interesting history dating as far back as 4000 years BC. There are hieroglyphics in ancient Egyptian tombs including pictures of wine being consumed by royalty. The oldest known example of a bottle of wine dates back to 325 AD, and it was found in a Roman sarcophagus in the year 1867.
Men and women alike have been participating in wine collecting for many centuries now, especially because there are simply so many different types and qualities of wine to partake in and explore. There are so many unique nuances in terms of aromas, tastes and qualities that collecting wine is just as much a form of art as collecting sculptures or oil paintings. Wine also has a unique ability to become something of a social centerpiece during a meal, and it is capable of promoting friendship and wine collecting has even become a commercial enterprise for people who are interested in buying, selling and trading a unique array of wine.
Australians really seem to appreciate wine, seeing as the country has the sixth largest level of production of wine for the entire world, at least as of 2006. Wine is produced in every state of the country, and there are a wide variety of different growing conditions making it possible for wineries in Australia to produce red wines, white wines, sparkling wines, fortified wines and even dessert wines. What is even more fascinating, perhaps, is the fact that all of these various wine collecting categories also include their own variations depending on what grapes and what production methods are specifically used.
Now you add in the variety of the wines that are produced all over the entire world to this mixture, and it should be relatively easy for you to figure out why so many people dedicate their lives to the world and the art of wine collecting. There is such an incredible array of wines on a global scale that are capable of tempting the palate including wines that come from Ireland, Italy, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France and even the United States. This is just a small list of the countries that produce truly award winning wine varietals.
Just like with collecting any type of art, there is definitely a right and wrong way to approach the practice of wine collecting. The first consideration that you need to make is what you are going to collect. Some people collect for hobby, others collect for investment purposes, and some people collect solely to drink every bottle that interests them. Once you know what type of wine collector you intend to be, you can begin to seek out the right pieces for your collection.

Ordering a bottle of wine at a restaurant can be confusing and even daunting. Many times, what little information available is incomplete or even wrong. To make matters worse, not many restaurants have a wait staff that is knowledgeable about the wines in question, leaving them to be of little help. So what are you to do in a situation like this? Take on the selection process with some of these following tips in mind, which is what you should do.
1 – First and foremost, you should not be fooled into the belief that the most expensive of all the bottles on the list is going to be the best or most worthwhile wine on the list. Many restaurants charge as much as twice the going rate for the wine that they offer by the bottle, so that $15 Chardonnay that you really love could be costing you $30 per bottle if you are not careful.
2 – Second, you should never allow yourself to become intimidated when it comes to buying wine in restaurants. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions if you need to. If the wine list doesn’t indicate the name, the vintage and the grape variety or other pertinent information, don’t be afraid to ask for more information before you choose a bottle.
3 – Third, do not be afraid to stick with what you know, or what you feel comfortable with. You need to know how reasonable the pricing is, so try to recognize some of the wines in the list and compare them to what you remember paying when you bought a bottle from a wine store to get a good idea about the markup on wine in restaurants.
4 – Fourth, if you plan on bringing in your own bottle, make sure that you call ahead of time to ask for permission or to find out what the regulations are for the restaurant so that you do not step on any toes.
5 – Fifth, when you are ordering your wine by the class, check to find out what the bottle costs and do the math to make sure that you are buying your wine in the most cost effective manner.
6 – If it appears to be too good to be true, then it probably isn’t true at all. If something on the menu seems out of place because it’s marked down significantly, it may actually be a ploy for the sommelier to suggest other wines that are similar in style but much more significant in terms of price.
7 – Finally, know that not every sommelier or restaurateur is dishonest. Dishonest sommeliers are actually the exception, and most are honest because they are passionate about what they do, and they genuinely want you to have a good wine experience.

November 13th, 2011 — Wine Collecting
When it comes to collecting wine, collecting wine bottles, or really any other type of collection for that matter, one of the first things that you are going to want to have figured out is your budget. Step one in the process of collecting wine is to set your wine budget.
Wine collecting is a hobby that can quickly and easily get out of your hands if you are not careful. In your personal quest to find more great wines, you could potentially lose sight over just how much money you are spending in the process. If you want to keep yourself from dipping into rainy day funds and savings accounts, it would be sensible for you to begin your wine collecting hobby by setting a workable wine budget.
It is important for you to understand exactly how much of your working capital you are going to be able to allocate for the purpose of wine purchases, and then once you have this wine budget laid out you are going to want to stick to it as closely as you possibly can. Think about this, for example: At an average price of $10 dollars per bottle, the average case cost for wine is going to be $120. If you are going to be buying a case worth of wine every single month, then you will be spending a little less than $1,500 dollars every year. This may not seem like much at all, but how many of us are only spending $10 for every bottle of wine that we buy?
The reason why $10 was chosen for this example is to make the math seem a little easier, with the nice rounding up to $1,500 per month. At $20 dollars for each bottle, and a case purchased every single month, the cost goes to $3,000 per year. At $30 dollars per bottle of wine, and a purchase of one case per month, the cost per year vaults up to $6,000 easily.
At this point, you should get the picture pretty well.
Here is something else that you are going to want to think about: If you are buying a case every month, then you are buying 12 cases worth of wine in a year. In total, then, you are buying 144 bottles of wine in the span of 365 days. In the span of 365 days, drinking 144 bottles of wine means that you are going to drink a bottle of wine every third day, which equates approximately two bottles every week. For some people, this is a lot of wine. For other people, this may be less wine than they normally consume from day to day.
At the end of the day, the thing that is important above all else is how much money you are actually capable of affording to spend on this particular past time.

October 28th, 2011 — Wine Collecting, Wine Labels
Drinking a glass of wine is one of those luxuries that can quickly grow into an obsession with wine bottles, wine varieties and even wine labels. The more that you get into wine collecting, the more you are going to want to document all of the wine experiences that you have. Some people keep a journal marking all of their wine experiences, while other people collect wine labels so that they have something interesting and visually appealing to mark all of their wine-drinking history.
So what is wine label art collecting all about? It is a simple method for documenting all of the unique vintages that you have tried. Once you have finished drinking the bottle, what you will typically do is remove the wine bottle label and slip it into your wine journal. There are a lot of journals designed for just this purpose including the Nomad Wine Journal, which provides spaces for you to put your wine label art, and spaces to write about the characteristics of the wine itself including its flavor and aroma.
The first step in collecting wine label art is to remove the label from the bottle of wine. The steps to doing this successfully with the wine label art in one piece begins by figuring out exactly how the label has been adhered to the wine bottle. European style wines typically use glue for this purpose. Other areas tend to prefer adhesives that are similar to what you find on the average sticker. There are different techniques involved in removing each of these for the best possible results.
For a label that has been glued on, fill the bottle using hot water. Place the bottle inside a container allowing the water to reach above the label, such as a water pitcher. Fill the water pitcher with hot water as well and allow it to soak for five minutes. When the label begins to move around freely, it is ready to be peeled away. Peel it slowly and carefully. You should be able to place it wet in your wine label art journal while it is still somewhat wet, allowing the glue to simply re-adhere to the page of the journal.
When you are dealing with any other adhesive label, the process is similar but much simpler. You would fill the wine bottle with hot water as before, but simply allow it to sit for a period of five minutes. The label should begin to peel away on its own. You should not need to place the wine bottle in a container of hot water. The adhesive should still be sticky once removed, and you should be able to adhere it directly into your wine label art journal.
