It doesn’t matter what age you are, one of the great American pastimes is collecting comic books. If you have a bunch of them lying around and you’ve been saying for years that you don’t want to throw them away because they’re worth a fortune, then you may be right. Yet, not all comics are worth something. Just because they’re old doesn’t make then a good investment. There are several ways to see if all of those stacks of paper are gold birdcage liner.
One of the main reasons why comic books are seen as such an investment was actually because of WWII and recycling. Back when there were all of the paper drives to help with the war effort, parents would throw all of these old comics away. We live in a market economy and we all know that supply has a direct correlation to price and demand. Since so many of these old comic books were tossed out or recycled, there were so few of them, which made them really rare but ever since comics were seen as a huge investment, people started saving everything. This drove up the supply which decreased the worth and demand. It’s simple economics.
You may have a bunch of old smelly comics sitting around that are worthless and you’ve been hanging onto them for years for absolutely no reason. The easiest way to check is to just go online. This is the best way to determine your comics’ value. You can use search engines like Google or Yahoo or go to a more authoritative resource like Mile High Comics and you can type in the name issue number and determine what local retailers are buying it at. You can also use auction sites like Ebay to sell them if you think your comic is worth more than the local buyer is willing to pay for it.
Comic book collectors also need to be realistic. If a comic has water damage, dog eared pages, or is in relatively poor condition due to the wear and tear of time, this will most defiantly affect the value. Also realize that just because a price guide, like Wizard, tells you that the comic book is worth a ton, doesn’t mean that’s what you’ll get. A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
Use some of these helpful tips if you think you might be sitting on a gold mine. You may have been right all of these years so check into what they’re worth. And even if they end up not worth money, there’s always the intrinsic value of a childhood association that’s worth more than any amount. You can always hang onto them. If you don’t have the space you can always consult self storage and find an affordable and safe place for your prized investments with a local storage facility. Even if they’re not worth anything to someone else. They might mean the world to you.
