There seems to be a market these days for every type of vintage collectibles under the sun, and Bakelite and antique plastic jewelry vintage collectibles are certainly no exception. These vintage jewelry collectibles include antique and vintage jewelry made from Bakelite as well as from vintage types of plastic include celluloid, Lucite and more. These items have gained a significant amount of respect in the world of vintage collectibles and they are now being sought after much more every year because all generations are beginning to collect these unique vintage collectibles not only in the form of vintage plastic jewelry, but also vintage plastic kitchenware, utensils, flatware and so much more.

Many people do not realize how many of the items that they grew up with in their childhoods were actually made out of what we now perceive to be vintage plastics like Bakelite and Lucite. The handles of your flatware and your eating utensils, kitchen clocks, ice cream scoops and egg beaters, plastic radios, sugar shaker tops, can openers, pot handles, telephones and so many other items were made out of Lucite or Bakelite, and even sometimes the two plastic materials were combined in order to create new items including two tone flatware and stunning costume jewelry. These plastics such as Lucite and Bakelite were primarily made so that the public could be provided with items at less expense, especially when money was tight during the World War II era. Plastics like Celluloid have actually been around since before the 1900s. The Celluloid plastic is a vintage plastic that was originally developed by a man named John Wesley Hyatt in the year 1869 and then it was widely used up until 1917, especially during part of the Art Deco era. Bakelite is a different type of plastic that is not capable of being melted in the same way that most plastics can be melted. Bakelite is actually an early Polymeric plastic that was made from a type of Phenol Formaldehyde Resin that was invented by a man named Leo Hendrik Baekeland in the year 1907, but what he was actually trying to create was a type of varnish, not a type of plastic.

If you have Bakelite plastic or other types of vintage collectibles made from plastic, you should be gentle with them no matter how sturdy they look. You should always buy the pieces that you like and you should always be creative when purchasing vintage collectibles made from vintage plastics. Your Lucite, Bakelite and Celluloid pieces should be stored beautifully so that people can see them and enjoy them rather than storing them away where they cannot be seen or appreciated.

To make a living with ebay collectibles, you need to have a good way to find a stream of products to sell.

Ebay can be a great marketing tool, but an ebay collectibles business will fail if you don’t constantly find more items.

The best advice is to get sellers to call you with items they have that you might be able to sell.

If you are running around to flea markets, garage sales and estate sales trying to find items that will work well for sale as ebay collectibles, you’re leaving yourself very little time to market products. You’re also likely wasting lots of time with items that aren’t relevant to your business so you end up wasting your time.

Additionally, when sellers call you, you have the advantage. If you’re at a garage sale, you’re competing with all the other buyers and collectors for the same items. You’re in a race with lots of others for the same prize.

If the sellers call you, however, you’ve made them think that they may be able to raise some cash by selling their unwanted items to you.

You don’t want to rely on simple luck if you are trying to create an income with ebay collectibles. Trying garage sales is simply relying on luck – if you’re lucky, you’ll get there before other dealers, and you might get a good buy.

On the other hand, if you have a system you can get a consistent stream of new items to post on your ebay pages and create steady income and interest.

Instead of focusing on visiting the flea market, focus your time and energy on getting your phone to ring with people wanting you to buy their collectibles.

First, invest some time into reading up and practicing marketing, salesmanship, and closing the deal. A little time invested in understanding the nature of humans and understanding how sales works can pay off big.

Even though you are technically the buyer, you need to sell the person on the idea that you are a better buyer than anyone else, and that they should accept your offer.

Make up business cards and hand them out to anyone you meet or bump into.  Hand them out to the people near you in the line at the post office or grocery store, and find places where you can post fliers.

Let your friends and neighbors know what you want, and they’ll become some of your best advertisers. Give them cards to hand out.

Put some of your antiques or ebay collectibles on display at the local library or town center and make sure to put your name and phone number in the case.

Run small ads in the local paper saying that you pay cash for collectibles or antiques, and you can buy an advertising sign in the outfield of a local baseball park, basketball gym or soccer field.

Run ads in company newsletters that say you buy ebay collectibles or antiques, or put up a sign in the local pawn shop.

Soon you’ll have people calling you!

Perfume bottles are a highly collectible item, not just because of their uniqueness and beauty, but because they’re easy to store and display. Most people collect perfume bottles, not necessarily because of the value but because they find them beautiful. As long as there have been perfumed oils and fragrances for the body, there have had to be containers to hold them. While an ancient perfume container is a truly rare find, vintage perfume bottles produced over the last hundred years or so are easy to find in places like online auctions.

Perfume bottles from the 16th and 17th century will probably be Venetian and Murano glass, and can be valuable because they’re handmade, one-of-a-kind. Nineteenth-century bottles might be made from porcelain. Bottles made in the 20th century both benefited and suffered from mass-production. Now the bottles were uniform and exactly alike, allowing a perfumery to duplicate a bottle an infinite number of times, as well as produce more product more quickly for sale. But with that came the decline of hand-made, unique bottles.

One of the most famous perfume bottles created during the mid-20th century is the Lalique L’air du Temps, one any collector shouldn’t be without unless you choose to specialize in a certain type of bottle. This bottle features one or more frosted doves on top of the bottle. Empty bottles from the 1940s can go for anywhere from $50 and up at auction.

Other perfume bottles from these early years of mass production can be worth as much, or more. If you’re interested in the bottles solely for their investment value, it would pay to read some books about collecting them and how to judge the price of the items. Always look for bottles in the original box with any tags or charms still intact.

If you want to collect them mostly for the aesthetics, then it’s just a matter of deciding what you like. There are so many different types of perfume bottles that one could never hope to collect even a small portion of them, so it’s necessary to decide a direction, or decide just to collect a smattering of different styles.

You might choose to collect perfume bottles that held a certain perfume, or fragrances by a specific company. Lalique is a great example of a company that put out many beautiful bottles in different designs for its different scents. You might choose bottles that feature something specific, like flowers. Marc Jacobs’ Daisy has a beautiful flower-topped bottle. Or you might choose bottles from specific countries, or those produced during certain years.
