Collecting Wine Label Art

reservaDrinking a glass of wine is one of those luxuries that can quickly grow into an obsession with wine bottles, wine varieties and even wine labels. The more that you get into wine collecting, the more you are going to want to document all of the wine experiences that you have. Some people keep a journal marking all of their wine experiences, while other people collect wine labels so that they have something interesting and visually appealing to mark all of their wine-drinking history.

So what is wine label art collecting all about? It is a simple method for documenting all of the unique vintages that you have tried. Once you have finished drinking the bottle, what you will typically do is remove the wine bottle label and slip it into your wine journal. There are a lot of journals designed for just this purpose including the Nomad Wine Journal, which provides spaces for you to put your wine label art, and spaces to write about the characteristics of the wine itself including its flavor and aroma.

The first step in collecting wine label art is to remove the label from the bottle of wine. The steps to doing this successfully with the wine label art in one piece begins by figuring out exactly how the label has been adhered to the wine bottle. European style wines typically use glue for this purpose. Other areas tend to prefer adhesives that are similar to what you find on the average sticker. There are different techniques involved in removing each of these for the best possible results.

For a label that has been glued on, fill the bottle using hot water. Place the bottle inside a container allowing the water to reach above the label, such as a water pitcher. Fill the water pitcher with hot water as well and allow it to soak for five minutes. When the label begins to move around freely, it is ready to be peeled away. Peel it slowly and carefully. You should be able to place it wet in your wine label art journal while it is still somewhat wet, allowing the glue to simply re-adhere to the page of the journal.

When you are dealing with any other adhesive label, the process is similar but much simpler. You would fill the wine bottle with hot water as before, but simply allow it to sit for a period of five minutes. The label should begin to peel away on its own. You should not need to place the wine bottle in a container of hot water. The adhesive should still be sticky once removed, and you should be able to adhere it directly into your wine label art journal.

Antique Vintage Plastic Collectibles

plasticcollectibleThere seems to be a market these days for every type of vintage collectibles under the sun, and Bakelite and antique plastic jewelry vintage collectibles are certainly no exception. These vintage jewelry collectibles include antique and vintage jewelry made from Bakelite as well as from vintage types of plastic include celluloid, Lucite and more. These items have gained a significant amount of respect in the world of vintage collectibles and they are now being sought after much more every year because all generations are beginning to collect these unique vintage collectibles not only in the form of vintage plastic jewelry, but also vintage plastic kitchenware, utensils, flatware and so much more.

Many people do not realize how many of the items that they grew up with in their childhoods were actually made out of what we now perceive to be vintage plastics like Bakelite and Lucite.
The handles of your flatware and your eating utensils, kitchen clocks, ice cream scoops and egg beaters, plastic radios, sugar shaker tops, can openers, pot handles, telephones and so many other items were made out of Lucite or Bakelite, and even sometimes the two plastic materials were combined in order to create new items including two tone flatware and stunning costume jewelry. There were a variety of different patterns that began to surface when it was discovered that Bakelite plastic and Lucite plastic could be combined, no longer limiting these plastic items to solid colors only. One of the most popular designs was checkerboard, but there were also dot patterns, animal patterns and pearlized designs to choose from.

These plastics such as Lucite and Bakelite were primarily made so that the public could be provided with items at less expense, especially when money was tight during the World War II era. Plastics like Celluloid have actually been around since before the 1900s. The Celluloid plastic is a vintage plastic that was originally developed by a man named John Wesley Hyatt in the year 1869 and then it was widely used up until 1917, especially during part of the Art Deco era. Bakelite is a different type of plastic that is not capable of being melted in the same way that most plastics can be melted. Bakelite is actually an early Polymeric plastic that was made from a type of Phenol Formaldehyde Resin that was invented by a man named Leo Hendrik Baekeland in the year 1907, but what he was actually trying to create was a type of varnish, not a type of plastic.

If you have Bakelite plastic or other types of vintage collectibles made from plastic, you should be gentle with them no matter how sturdy they look. You should always buy the pieces that you like and you should always be creative when purchasing vintage collectibles made from vintage plastics. Your Lucite, Bakelite and Celluloid pieces should be stored beautifully so that people can see them and enjoy them rather than storing them away where they cannot be seen or appreciated.

Collecting Toby Mugs

tobymugsThere are a myriad of different items and trinkets that can be collected, depending on your taste and interests. One example of collectibles that you may have interest in is Toby mugs, a type of ceramic mugs that are sold in Britain. These mugs are created with caricatures on them, and the most common type of caricature that you will find on Toby mugs is of old sailors. Toby mugs have become quite popular within the collecting trade. One of the most popular and most famous of all Toby mugs is one that was created in the late 1940s, and that is seen sitting over the fireplace in the movie known as Twelve O’ Clock High.

These Toby mugs are a unique form of British pottery, and they originally appeared during the 1760s in Staffordshire. They were originally created in order to serve as a vessel used for drinking, but these Toby mugs quickly evolved into something completely different, as people began to collect them as ornamental objects. The most well known central character was a larger man that was seated in a chair and typically holding either a jug of ale or a pipe, and this man was known as Toby Fillpot, which is where the “Toby mugs” name is derived from.

Although it is still uncertain exactly who Toby Fillpot was based upon, this character is one that is truly endearing. Most of the English pubs have had at least one regular visitor that closely resembles Toby. Early Toby mugs were typically modeled after a number of different British characters that are familiar to us all, such as parsons, squires, sailors and town criers for example. Then, during the 19th century, the characters became modeled after a number of other subjects as well including people from politics, literature and history. Most Toby mugs are still manufactured in England, although there are other potteries that exist, and there are even manufacturers of Toby mugs in America as well. The American made Toby mugs are becoming more increasingly sought after as well. Two other manufacturers of Toby mugs are Lancaster Sandland and Royal Doulton.

The different manufacturers of Toby mugs create completely unique takes on the same concept. Toby mugs are regularly associated with bringing about well being, comfort and good times, and this is why many people become fascinated with them and decide to collect them. Toby mugs come in a wide variety of different forms as they have throughout history, and now there are a wide variety of different Toby mugs to choose from when you begin your collection. If you are interested in collecting Toby mugs, there are a lot of different avenues for you to pursue.

Collecting Wine Bottle Corks

winecorksMost people are familiar with collecting wine, and even collecting wine bottles, but one of the types of collections that some people are unaware of is collecting wine bottle corks. Wine bottle corks are often just as unique as the bottles that they are sealing, and people that consider them selves to be wine aficionados can appreciate the importance of wine bottle corks because they are responsible for keeping the wine in good condition, ensuring that it ages properly and has the perfect taste and texture. If you appreciate everything that wine collecting and wine bottle collecting have to offer, then why not consider also collecting wine bottle corks?

Cork has a number of unique physical properties in its natural form, and they make this material a truly ideal one to use for sealing wine bottles. Natural cork has actually been the wine bottle seal of choice ever since Roman times. Cork has a cell structure that is unique and honeycomb in nature. Every sell is sealed and filled with air, and no two cells are connected to one another. Cork has an elastic texture which means that it can be compressed and still returns to its original value upon being released.

What makes this happen with wine bottle corks is the structure of the cells in the cork. As the cork becomes compressed, the air in each of the cells becomes compressed. Then when the pressure is removed, the cork naturally expands back into its original shape and volume.

Cork is also waterproof, which is another quality that comes from the cell structure of the natural material. The individual cells are sealed and this means that they are not connected to one another. There is no chance of capillary action or any wicking when it comes to cork materials.

Cork has individual cells that are filled up with air, and these cells are very extremely poor conductors when it comes to vibration and heat. What this means is that cork has been ideal for a long time for sound proofing and flooring purposes. This may not matter when it comes to wine bottle corks, but wine bottle corks that aren’t collected are often turned into other things such as flooring, gaskets and floats.

Another benefit of cork is that it is relatively light weight in nature. It has a low amount of density because the various cells are filled up with air. Cork has been used for a myriad of unique purposes including fishing floats just as long as it has been used as wine bottle corks.

Another benefit of wine bottle corks is the high friction surface, which means that the cork can be compressed, inserted into the bottle, can regain shape and fill the bottle, and will therefore stay in place in the bottle. When the cork is cut, millions of the cells are ruptured, and this is responsible for forming rough domes capable of sealing onto smooth surfaces like the neck of a glass wine bottle.

Caring for Doll Collectibles

vintagedollThe term collectible refers to just about anything that you can imagine, as long as it is something that can be collected, and something that holds value to someone, somewhere. For example, many people enjoy doll collectibles, so much so that doll collectibles are some of the most popular collectibles out there right now. This is because when you think collectibles, you probably think collectible dolls.

If you are interested in doll collectibles, then the first thing that it is important to do is to educate yourself about doll collectibles as much as you possibly can. One thing that you absolutely need to learn is how you are going to protect the investment that you put into your doll collectibles by learning how to properly care for them. This is going to give you the opportunity to keep your doll collectibles in the most perfect possible condition so that you can sell them or pass them on later as needed.

When you first buy a doll and bring it home, you should not tear the packaging open. If you can possibly help it, you should leave the packaging in perfect, mint condition. You are going to need to remove the doll from the packaging, however, in order to take the steps necessary to make sure that your doll collectibles have a very long shelf life.

The first step to removing doll collectibles from packaging is to remove tape from the bows in the doll’s hair if they exist. Any remaining tape is going to leave a residue that will impact the doll’s resale value later on. Anything that might rust inside the packaging must also be removed. If there is metal in the packaging and it rusts over time, the doll could be completely ruined over time.

Now you should buy acid free tissue paper that you can wrap your doll collectibles in. This is available through hobby stores. The doll’s clothes should be removed before you wrap your dolls in the paper. Then put the clothing back on the doll. The integrity of the doll collectibles fabric will be maintained by doing this. Fabric dyes can dye the skin of your doll otherwise. If your doll picks up odd colors from her clothing, she will no longer be a worthy member of your collection.

Now your doll collectibles’ eyes should be treated. If they move freely or close automatically when the doll is horizontal, then you should use diluted isopropyl alcohol to treat the eyes. Apply a thin layer of the solution before wiping the entire eye area clean using a clean cotton towel. Allow the eyes to dry completely. This will keep them not only clean but also completely dust free as well.

The more you do to care for your doll collectibles, the more they will be worth as an entire collection later in your life. A little bit of prevention now can mean a better collection in the future.

Vintage Red Wine Storage

wineglasTemperature is an unseen factor when it comes to collecting vintage red wine, and so it is a factor that is often neglected. Unfortunately, it plays a very, very large and significant role in bringing out the best or the worst in a bottle of wine, both when it comes to storing wine and also serving it.

Storing Vintage Red Wine

Sadly, many excellent vintage red wine collections are damaged because of moisture and temperature instability. High temperatures can cause a bottle of wine to age more quickly than it is meant to, losing its balance and its flavor in the process. When it is chilled to be too cold, wine can also lose its aromas and its flavors. You need to take care to keep your vintage red wine away from sunlight as well as heat exposure by storing your bottles in wine fridges, wine cellars or rooms that are temperature controlled. If there is a wide fluctuation in the temperature then you could end up damaging not only the wine, but the cork protecting the wine as well.

The ideal range of vintage red wine temperature should be between 50 degrees and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, which translate to 10 degrees to 16 degrees Celsius. White wines, on the other hand, can be stored at lower temperature ranges climbing down as low as 45 degrees Fahrenheit. There are different storage and serving temperatures for different types of wine and so it is important to know what your collection consists of so that you can set your wine fridges or wine cellar thermostats to the proper temperature and keep your vintage red wine and other types of wine in excellent condition while you age them.

  • If you have a wine collection and you do not want to ruin it, then it would be well worthwhile for you to invest in the purchase of a wine fridge or possibly a wine cellar to keep your vintage red wine at the right temperatures.
  • Alternatively, you might be able to rent wine storage service from a local winery or wine store if you cannot store your wines at home.
  • Never leave a bottle of any type of wine in your freezer. When you freeze wine, it will expand, and subsequently the bottle of wine will explode inside of your freezer.
  • It is really easy for a vintage red wine label to become ruined in an environment that is too humid. To keep your wine labels safe you are going to want to put plastic wine protectors on the labels to keep them safer in all temperatures and levels of humidity.

Learning to Collect Books

oldbooksThere are many different people in the world that decide to collect books, and surprisingly enough, they decide to collect books for a whole host of different reasons that are just about as diverse as the books themselves. Classic works from the greats like Homer, Shakespeare, Dante and Dickens can jump right out of the pages, stamping themselves on the minds of those reading and collecting them. The reason why so many people decide to collect books is because great books are capable of inspiring everyday readers as well as people that are dedicated to bookbinding, book production and other parts of creating the books that we love to read so much.

Many editions of our favorite classics have seen publishing ever since the invention of the printing press, which occurred more than 500 years ago. These books were held in such high regard that you can tell from the quality of the bindings and covers how important these books used to be, as well as the illustrations that are used to adorn as well as illuminate each of the pages of text. To own a fine quality leather bound classic novel that is artfully illustrated with engravings or woodcuts is a pleasure of the senses and the mind all at once.

These are just some of the reasons for why people like to collect books, and this includes all types of books including fine books and rare books. There are novice collectors that sometimes find themselves asking what types of works are actually worth spending their hard earned money on – And so this basic principle for collecting should be considered: Simply attempt to collect books that are fine and rare and that are by authors that you have once read or intend to read at some point, as long as there is world enough as well as time enough. Your collection, thusly, will reflect your interests and your tastes, and this is what you should be striving to achieve when you collect books.

Some people that collect books decide to organize the books that they collect following a specific well known illustrator. Other people that collect books decide to collect solely on the materials or the craftsmanship of the book itself and its binding, such as calf skin books, morocco books, vellum books. In all of these cases however, it is especially important that you collect books that personally interest you and excite you, because your book collection should be a product of your own interests and your own desires and not based on perceived value of books to other people.

When you decide to collect books, know that the sky is the limit in terms of what you can collect and how you can form your collection. Do not let anything limit your collection but your own capabilities, interests and imagination.
