Buying Wine in Restaurants

winesOrdering a bottle of wine at a restaurant can be confusing and even daunting. Many times, what little information available is incomplete or even wrong. To make matters worse, not many restaurants have a wait staff that is knowledgeable about the wines in question, leaving them to be of little help. So what are you to do in a situation like this? Take on the selection process with some of these following tips in mind, which is what you should do.

1 – First and foremost, you should not be fooled into the belief that the most expensive of all the bottles on the list is going to be the best or most worthwhile wine on the list. Many restaurants charge as much as twice the going rate for the wine that they offer by the bottle, so that $15 Chardonnay that you really love could be costing you $30 per bottle if you are not careful.

2 – Second, you should never allow yourself to become intimidated when it comes to buying wine in restaurants. There is absolutely nothing wrong with asking questions if you need to. If the wine list doesn’t indicate the name, the vintage and the grape variety or other pertinent information, don’t be afraid to ask for more information before you choose a bottle.

3 – Third, do not be afraid to stick with what you know, or what you feel comfortable with. You need to know how reasonable the pricing is, so try to recognize some of the wines in the list and compare them to what you remember paying when you bought a bottle from a wine store to get a good idea about the markup on wine in restaurants.

4 – Fourth, if you plan on bringing in your own bottle, make sure that you call ahead of time to ask for permission or to find out what the regulations are for the restaurant so that you do not step on any toes.

5 – Fifth, when you are ordering your wine by the class, check to find out what the bottle costs and do the math to make sure that you are buying your wine in the most cost effective manner.

6 – If it appears to be too good to be true, then it probably isn’t true at all. If something on the menu seems out of place because it’s marked down significantly, it may actually be a ploy for the sommelier to suggest other wines that are similar in style but much more significant in terms of price.

7 – Finally, know that not every sommelier or restaurateur is dishonest. Dishonest sommeliers are actually the exception, and most are honest because they are passionate about what they do, and they genuinely want you to have a good wine experience.

Collecting Walt Disney Collectibles

aliceOne of the types of Walt Disney Collectibles that is available to you is Walt Disney Classics Collection or WDCC, which was originally introduced in the year 1992 at a collectibles show known as South Bend Collectible Show. Three years of work went into the creation of this collection of Disney figurines that involved the input of numerous Disney sculptors and animation artists. The Walt Disney Collectibles were designed to closely resemble all of the animated counterparts that they were based on. These particular Walt Disney Collectibles offer incredible detail work and the figurines are created out of porcelain. Immediately they became a huge hit among fans and collectors of Walt Disney Collectibles.

The first three figures that were released in this collection of Walt Disney Collectibles were scenes that came straight out of the Bambi movie, the Cinderella movie and the Sorcerer’s Apprentice from the Fantasia movie.

Now to date there are more than 100 different Walt Disney Collectibles in the Walt Disney Classics Collection. They have been produced for over a decade and many have become retired in this period of time. The retirements have become common, creating what is essentially a secondary market for collectors that are seeking out these rare Walt Disney Collectibles. With each and every single retirement, the molds are really and truly broken, and what this does is ensures that additional characters will never be created again using these same molds. Some Walt Disney Collectibles are also issued with numbers as limited editions. It should be noted that the Disney company avoids starting off their numbers with the number one. All of these Walt Disney Collectibles carry a specific back stamp that indicates what year the figurine was produced in. Each of these Walt Disney Collectibles is also going to be issued with a COA or Certificate of Authenticity.

Only a year after the Walt Disney Collectibles debuted, Disney introduced a club for collectors that was designed to be an adjunct to the collection. Members of the Walt Disney Collectors Society pay $50 per year to join and they get a free figurine from the club every year as well as access to numerous additional members only Walt Disney Collectibles, a newsletter, a magazine subscription and an annual catalog of the Walt Disney Collectibles offered by the collection. In 1993, the special membership sculpture was a Jiminy Cricket from the Pinocchio movie. The Walt Disney Collectibles market is managed by Enesco, a licensee by Disney. Some of the more original staff members within Disney still work on maintaining the Walt Disney Collectibles club.

If you are interested in Walt Disney Collectibles, this is a club that is well worth joining. It will give you access to a wide variety of different Walt Disney Collectibles, some of which are truly rare and difficult to get your hands on. If you fancy a challenge, it would be well worthwhile for you to check out what Walt Disney Collectibles have to offer.

Setting a Wine Budget

doublsWhen it comes to collecting wine, collecting wine bottles, or really any other type of collection for that matter, one of the first things that you are going to want to have figured out is your budget. Step one in the process of collecting wine is to set your wine budget.

Wine collecting is a hobby that can quickly and easily get out of your hands if you are not careful. In your personal quest to find more great wines, you could potentially lose sight over just how much money you are spending in the process. If you want to keep yourself from dipping into rainy day funds and savings accounts, it would be sensible for you to begin your wine collecting hobby by setting a workable wine budget.

It is important for you to understand exactly how much of your working capital you are going to be able to allocate for the purpose of wine purchases, and then once you have this wine budget laid out you are going to want to stick to it as closely as you possibly can. Think about this, for example: At an average price of $10 dollars per bottle, the average case cost for wine is going to be $120. If you are going to be buying a case worth of wine every single month, then you will be spending a little less than $1,500 dollars every year. This may not seem like much at all, but how many of us are only spending $10 for every bottle of wine that we buy?

The reason why $10 was chosen for this example is to make the math seem a little easier, with the nice rounding up to $1,500 per month. At $20 dollars for each bottle, and a case purchased every single month, the cost goes to $3,000 per year. At $30 dollars per bottle of wine, and a purchase of one case per month, the cost per year vaults up to $6,000 easily.

At this point, you should get the picture pretty well.

Here is something else that you are going to want to think about: If you are buying a case every month, then you are buying 12 cases worth of wine in a year. In total, then, you are buying 144 bottles of wine in the span of 365 days. In the span of 365 days, drinking 144 bottles of wine means that you are going to drink a bottle of wine every third day, which equates approximately two bottles every week. For some people, this is a lot of wine. For other people, this may be less wine than they normally consume from day to day.

At the end of the day, the thing that is important above all else is how much money you are actually capable of affording to spend on this particular past time.

Anatomy of a Pez Collection

pezOne of the unique differences among different collectibles when you are putting together a pez collection is the anatomy of the dispensers, as the different parts of the dispensers have changed over time. Here are some of the parts of a pez collection:

Head -

The head of the Pez dispenser is the character on the top of the dispenser. Sometimes the dispenser head is an object such as a truck, a cap or a whistle, or a character, such as a witch, Batman or a pumpkin, or perhaps even an animal, such as a dinosaur, a monkey or a giraffe. There is no end to what types of items can be positioned at the head of a Pez dispenser.

Stem –

The steam of a Pez dispenser is the body of the dispenser, or the main portion where the candy is stored. The stem is rectangular in its shape, and PEZ is written down both sides. One side features the lettering spelled from the top to the bottom, and the other side displays the lettering sideways from the bottom to the top. The stem of the Pez dispenser is also where you will find a patent number, the country of origin for the dispenser, and the IMC, which is an injection mold code.

Feet -

The Pez dispenser also has a base, which is known as the feet. They are a flat piece molded out of plastic, resembling shoes. The purpose of these feet is to make the Pez dispenser more stable when it is standing upright. The original Pez dispensers did not have any feet, they simply had squared off bottoms. These Pez dispensers are known as NF or Non-Footed dispensers. Some people affix little Pez shoes, allowing the dispensers to stand upright even if they do not have their own feet. There are two types of feet, thin profile feet and thicker profile feet. The thicker feet were not implemented until 1990.

Candy Pusher -

The candy pusher is essentially a finger that is on the back of the head, allowing you to push the candy forward when the head is tilted backward. There is also a flat, small surface on the pusher’s inner side, sitting against a head spring. This presses against the flat surface, allowing the head to remain spring loaded while it is in a closed position, meaning that the head never flops around, not even when the dispenser is upside down.

Inner Sleeve and Candy Button -

The inner sleeve is the candy tray, holding the Pez candy in piece. The candy button is a piece sitting inside the sleeve that pushes the candy upward so that the next piece is ready to be dispensed. These parts of the Pez dispenser are designed to keep the candy coming.

Appreciating Video Game Collectibles

videogameEveryone was young once- And when you were young, you probably played video games. Throughout history, we have amassed quite a collection of video game collectibles. Video game collectibles are video games, video game consoles, video game accessories and video game memorabilia that are vintage or antique, or that are collectible in some other form. Different people have different preferences when it comes to video game collectibles. Some people choose a specific console that interests them, and they collect every game, game guide, accessory and piece of memorabilia that is associated with that console. Some people have a specific game that they like, and they collect every version of that game and the memorabilia that is associated with it.

- A collector interested in console video game collectibles may choose to collect the NES, the original Nintendo Entertainment System. Then they may collect every Nintendo game, every controller, every guide, every piece of memorabilia, and any other related objects that they can in celebration of the NES.

- Another collector may be interested in video games as video game collectibles. Say a collector appreciates the Zelda series of games, so they collect every Zelda game regardless of the console it was released on, as well as Zelda books, movies, posters and other themed items that fall in with the Zelda concept. There are a number of popular game series out there that incite this kind of collecting, such as the Super Mario series, the Contra series, Castlevania, Zelda, Bubble Bobble, Kirby, and many other game themes as well.

- Other collectors choose video game collectibles that are especially rare. Some may collect arcade machines that are no longer in circulation, others may choose vintage pin ball machines. Some collectors may go for the rarest video games, or the rarest working consoles. Different video game collectibles have different meanings to different people – And the people that look for these video game collectibles are just as diverse as the types of collectibles that are out there.

Getting started in video game collectibles is actually becoming easier with the online marketplace, and the appearance of vintage video game stores, where the “old school” consoles and games are still available, albeit in a “used” or “pre owned” state. If you have a passion for video games, and you are looking for something that you can collect while furthering your interest in a passion, then it might be wise for you to consider the ins and outs associated with video game collectibles. There are so many video game collectibles out there, that you can grow your collection the way you want to, and you can enjoy your collection as well.
