September 30th, 2009 — Antique Bottles, Collectible Bottles, Collectibles, Decorative Collectibles, perfume bottles

Perfume bottles are a highly collectible item, not just because of their uniqueness and beauty, but because they’re easy to store and display. They’re small, smaller than many other types of collectible items, so even those with limited space can enjoy collecting at least a few of their favorites. They can also be quite valuable ranging from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars, depending on the manufacturer and the design. Collecting them is such a popular hobby there are even organizations dedicated to the hobby and a number of books written about collecting different types of bottles.
Most people collect perfume bottles, not necessarily because of the value but because they find them beautiful. As long as there have been perfumed oils and fragrances for the body, there have had to be containers to hold them. While an ancient perfume container is a truly rare find, vintage perfume bottles produced over the last hundred years or so are easy to find in places like online auctions.
Perfume bottles from the 16th and 17th century will probably be Venetian and Murano glass, and can be valuable because they’re handmade, one-of-a-kind. Nineteenth-century bottles might be made from porcelain. Bottles made in the 20th century both benefited and suffered from mass-production. Now the bottles were uniform and exactly alike, allowing a perfumery to duplicate a bottle an infinite number of times, as well as produce more product more quickly for sale. But with that came the decline of hand-made, unique bottles.
One of the most famous perfume bottles created during the mid-20th century is the Lalique L’air du Temps, one any collector shouldn’t be without unless you choose to specialize in a certain type of bottle. This bottle features one or more frosted doves on top of the bottle. Empty bottles from the 1940s can go for anywhere from $50 and up at auction.
Other perfume bottles from these early years of mass production can be worth as much, or more. If you’re interested in the bottles solely for their investment value, it would pay to read some books about collecting them and how to judge the price of the items. Always look for bottles in the original box with any tags or charms still intact.
If you want to collect them mostly for the aesthetics, then it’s just a matter of deciding what you like. There are so many different types of perfume bottles that one could never hope to collect even a small portion of them, so it’s necessary to decide a direction, or decide just to collect a smattering of different styles.
You might choose to collect perfume bottles that held a certain perfume, or fragrances by a specific company. Lalique is a great example of a company that put out many beautiful bottles in different designs for its different scents. You might choose bottles that feature something specific, like flowers. Marc Jacobs’ Daisy has a beautiful flower-topped bottle. Or you might choose bottles from specific countries, or those produced during certain years.

September 29th, 2009 — Cash Registers, Collectibles, antiques

Some of us remember going into the local Mom & Pop shop and having our penny candy rang up on a tall brass cash register. Some of us have seen such registers in dime stores or in antique stores. There are many things to be appreciated about a vintage cash register, not the least of which is the beautiful design. There’s no comparing an old cash register to the computerized scanning registers today. One may be more modern and efficient, but vintage cash registers were beautiful in their own right.
Before there were cash registers, people held their shop money in a variety of ways—each way individual to the store. Maybe they put it in an envelope or a pouch in a drawer, or even in an old cigar box as was common at the time. The cash register seemed to most to be a newfangled and unnecessary device, not worth spending any of that hard-earned money on. This is at least part of the reason why the registers were made with such beautiful cabinets—to entice people to buy them.
Shop owners had to have something that would look handsome in their stores, and be impressive to the customers, so the cash register was designed to be beautiful and give the look of success. The registers became status symbols for the store owner. And more than that, they represented American ingenuity at its finest, when assembly line production was in its infancy.
Cash register collecting isn’t nearly as widespread as collecting china, stamps or coins, but those who do it have a certain passion for their subject. If you want to get started collecting vintage cash registers, you’ll want to look at registers manufactured before 1917 or 1918. The beginning of World War I also started a metal shortage in America that limited the use of brass in cash register design, among other things. So registers produced during this time were plain and boxy, with no real ornamentation. That caught on, and the look from then on was merely functional rather than beautiful.
Early registers like the Ritty are prized by collectors because they were the first and gave way to great strides in the technology that changed cash register design almost immediately. Many collectors enjoy purchasing very old registers and restoring them to functionality. If you can find a beautiful brass register, polish it and restore it, you’ll have a true conversation piece that will look good anywhere in your home. Unlike many antiques and collectibles, a cash register is typically worth more when it’s restored than when it’s in its original condition, unless its original condition is excellent. Restoration should bring the register as close to its original condition as possible.
There are societies dedicated to cash register collection where you can research manufacturers and find which are more collectible, and shops and organizations that can help you purchase original parts to restore these registers. Antique shops and online auctions are great places to find beautiful registers for your unique collection.

September 29th, 2009 — Vintage Punk Clothes
While vintage punk clothes are a popular item today, they didn’t even exist until the 1970s. The punk movement began in the 1970s in London with a small group of about 200 youth who wanted to go against the current trend. The movements was considered aggressive and promoting anarchy, and a music movement that went by the term punk emerged at the same time.
Because of the punk movement and their idea of themselves as anti-fashion and anti-convention, a popular form of punk clothing was that of holey, torn and ripped clothing. It was popular for “punks” to buy clothes from thrift and charity stores, cut them up and reform them into something different entirely, representing limited cash flow, unemployment and the lack of opportunity for those who leave school early, which was considered anti-society and a punk thing to do. Vintage punk clothes are eye-catching and were designed to attract attention and stand out in a crowd.
Vintage punk clothes were shocking in the 1970s, but they’re less noteworthy today with tears, frays and other fashion statements like that as normal as they are. But when punkers began wearing these clothes in the 1970s, it was new, as clothes were always seen as something to keep clean and neat. They were also seen as indicators of character, breeding, education and class.
A popular look was heavy Doc Martens boot, which was rare to see on women at the time, and torn trousers that were open to show tights that were so holey they looked more like ladders. With vintage punk clothes almost anything goes, the more outrageous, torn or even dirty-looking, the better. Safety pins, chains, locks and even sharp razors were used in the clothing either to hold it together in places or as pendants.
Vintage punk clothes aren’t the only holdover from this period, as body piercing became popular among those who considered themselves punk. While piercings had always been limited to the ear lobes for the most part, now punkers began piercing themselves with studs and pins in their eyebrows, cheeks, noses and lips, something rarely seen. Fashion and piercings were unisex, with as many males sporting pierced ears and faces as women. These things that were seen as anti-establishment in the 1970s are all fairly common now, with people of all ages sporting body piercings and tattoos.
Vintage punk clothes can be found in regular vintage and thrift stores, online stores specializing in punk clothes, and online auctions like eBay. While vintage clothes still exist, a popular way to outfit yourself in punk styles that were new in the 70s but are less so today is with reproductions. Many shops specialize in making punk clothing that looks vintage and authentic to order. Or they use vintage fabrics to create new styles that hint at the punk era. Because these styles are still popular in some circles, many stores that cater to the offbeat feature new clothing that resembles, and basically celebrates, vintage punk clothes.

September 28th, 2009 — Collectibles, Grand Pianos, Music, Pianos
The first pianos to be called “grand” were manufactured in 1777, and soon became status symbols that the wealthy and affluent all wanted to own. A grand piano can command a room. Usually, it’s the largest piece of “furniture” in a room, and draws the eye the moment you enter. It turns any space in to a musical one, making it clear that there’s no room for any other purpose but music and grandeur. While grand pianos are beautiful and rather majestic looking, the difference between them and upright pianos goes far beyond mere size and scope.
In an upright piano, the strings are perpendicular to the keys, necessitated by the shape and size of the instrument. The chief benefits to owning an upright piano are the price, which is much less than a grand or baby grand, and the mobility. They’re easier to move, they can be placed against a wall and fit into a relatively small space for such a large instrument. The grand piano, however, takes up a huge amount of space. They’re large and more difficult to move, and pretty much demand a huge room that they won’t overwhelm with their size.
The strings in a grand piano stretch outward the length of the piano. This is what gives the grand piano, and even the baby grand, a much richer sound than an upright. The length of the strings allows for a truer tone and more resonance. Concerts and performances aren’t given on a grand piano just because it looks impressive on the stage—the sound quality is unparalleled. If you want to buy a grand piano, make sure you have a room large enough to do it justice. The ceiling height is an important consideration. A higher ceiling allows for more resonance of sound, while a ceiling that’s too low will only dampen the rich sounds of the piano.
When you decide to purchase a grand piano, you can choose a used or new instrument. This is a matter of personal preference, of course, but a well-loved and often-played instrument brings with it its own sense of history. While the sound of the instrument should be the most important consideration, you’ll want to make sure the wood is in good shape, the finish is true, and whether it’s original or has been renovated. A refinished grand piano can be a beautiful instrument, and better than one in bad condition, but you’ll want to know these details before you make a purchase.
Also keep in mind that grand piano lengths do vary quite a bit. If you’re looking to buy one simply for the appearance, then even a baby grand piano will give you the look you’re after in a smaller amount of space, and for a smaller price. But if the sound is important to you, and it should be, a longer grand piano is a better purchase than a shorter one, whether you’re buying used, antique or new. The longer the strings are, the truer and richer the tones will be.

September 28th, 2009 — Collectibles, Decorative Arts, Decorative Collectibles, Figurines, Glassware, Japanese Art

Japanese art is a type of art that has a very distinctive look. If a painting, a vase, a sculpture or some other type of art is Japanese, particularly if it’s antique art, it usually only takes a quick look for you to recognize the art’s origin. Just as every culture has its own specific properties, the artwork of Japan will always have certain traits in common, no matter what kind of media the artist used to express himself.
Some of the most popular pieces of antique Japanese art are, of course, the paintings. Scroll paintings are distinctively Asian, and come in many sizes and levels of detail. Authentic scroll paintings only dating back as far as the early 20th century cost as little as $200, but some Zen scroll paintings from that period that bear the artists name as well as the temple, and are in excellent condition, can be worth as much as a few thousand dollars.
Another popular type of antique Japanese art is porcelain. Early 20th century porcelain pieces are generally going to cost at least a few hundred dollars, provided they’re in good condition. Vases from the 19th century will generally cost at least that much, if not more. Japanese carvings like those on top of wooden treasure boxes can be worth thousands of dollars. Most likely, though, the exact year of manufacture isn’t known, and they’re more reasonably prices.
Japanese art is full of renderings of Buddha, so many antique pieces feature him in paintings, carvings, or stand-alone statues. These can be valuable, particularly if they’re carved of ivory or stone, and are more than 100 years old. Japanese decorative bronze work is a popular type of antique, too, as they often added detailed embellishments to things like bronze vases or chests.
Most Japanese artwork is easily recognized because of the brush strokes and the subject matter. Landscapes are popular, often featuring cherry blossoms and lots of trees. Wildlife is a popular subject in Japanese art, with cranes being a popular bird. And let’s not forget dragons. Dragons have an important place in Japanese mythology and culture, and are often depicted looking like serpents. Unlike the negative view much of the world holds against serpents, the Japanese thought serpents and dragons to be good luck, and very valuable.
When you’re shopping for antique Japanese art, if a piece you love is out of your price range, you can usually find reproductions of most anything for a more reasonable price. Nothing beats the authentic piece, though, so make sure that the seller is knowledgeable about the piece and Japanese art in general. Unfortunately with many pieces of art, especially paintings, the only way to determine if you’re getting a fair price is to have the item appraised. You might want a piece for its beauty, but be prepared to have it appraised eventually. Many sellers don’t even know the true value of the pieces they have up for auction, so look for similar items online and compare the prices.

September 27th, 2009 — Collectibles, Crystal Chandelier, Glassware
The crystal chandelier got its start in the 1600s in England, when the use of lead glass became common and even popular. Originally used in medieval abbeys and churches to light up the cavernous rooms, the chandelier started out as a wooden cross with spikes at the ends which held candles. The very word “chandelier” is from the French world candle, and means candleholder. Where the chandelier differs from other types of ancient candleholding devices is its location, suspended from the ceiling, usually in the middle of large rooms.
Aside from being a way to light up a room after dark in the years of pre-electricity, the chandelier has its place in our history in a more important way. Galileo Galilei actually discovered the law of the pendulum after watching a suspended lamp swing in the Pisa Cathedral and he realized that each swing took the same amount of time, even though it was shorter than the one before it. Of course, it wasn’t a crystal chandelier that prompted this discovery, but it wasn’t long after the first uses of chandeliers in medieval churches that the direct forerunner of the modern electric crystal chandelier was created.
Leaded glass, otherwise known as stained glass, became a common material for use in places like cathedrals in England in the 1600s. The lead made the glass more refractive, and added sparkle. Rock crystal was actually fairly rare at the time and often during cutting the quartz would break or crumble, ruining its light-refracting properties. So achieving that same sparkle from true crystal proved difficult. The addition of lead oxide softened the glass and made it easier to cut, make the glass crystals sparkle brilliantly. The dozens of pieces of glass in a crystal chandelier of that period would reflect the many candles used for illumination, and eventually became a common fixture in the homes of the wealthy and the upper classes.
In the 1700s, crystal chandeliers became longer and more ornate, and were in demand as luxury objects for the wealthy. The styles became more elaborate, as the crystal chandelier became almost a status symbol rather than a functional way to light up your home or palace. The drip pans below each candle were often made in the shape of bells or flowers, and the arms became more intricate, often in the style of a Grecian urn. While less wealthy households often used chandeliers for lighting, theirs were typically made of things like wood, metal or even tin.
As electric lighting became standard, the charm of the crystal chandelier began to lie in how it looked unlit, as a purely decorative piece. When it comes to chandeliers or any crystal items, Daniel Swarovski’s work is a highly sought after item. In the late 19th century he patented his machine that cut glass and jewelry perfectly. Those looking for a vintage crystal chandelier in online auctions often search first for Swarovskis, which are valuable and still sought out 50 years after his death.

September 27th, 2009 — Collectibles, Personalized Shot Glasses
For the person who has everything, personalized gifts can be some of the most thoughtful, so why not choose personalized shot glasses? There are many advantages to this type of collectible item, both as a gift, and as something you collect yourself.
Personalized shot glasses are relatively inexpensive compared to some other kinds of gifts. A plain shot glass might make a nice, small gift, but a personalized shot glass suddenly becomes much more significant. The thought that goes into a personalized item will always make it stand out to the recipient, and the personalization that’s added, depending on the message or occasion, can add an even more special touch.
As collectibles and gifts, personalized shot glasses may be small in size, but that’s an advantage. How many times have you received a gift that was meant to be displayed, only to wish it were smaller? Especially for those who love to collect, size and space can be real issues. Mugs are a popular collector item, but take up much more room than shot glasses which are easier to display in smaller spaces. Even a large shot glass collection takes up far less room than almost all other types of collections.
Personalized shot glasses can be purchased with almost any logo, saying, name, initial or type of image engraved or printed on. While these can be purchased in a variety of places, often the best bargains are found in online auctions, especially when you’re ordering bulk purchases.
You might wonder why anyone would ever want to order personalized shot glasses in bulk. In a world overrun by too many things and too much stuff, small and more personalized items are becoming more popular. Plastic shot glasses can be ordered in bulk, for instance, with the names of a bride and groom and handed out at wedding receptions as inexpensive wedding favors. Family reunions, birthday gatherings, almost any kind of convention or party, are possibilities for bulk shot glass purchases.
For individual purchases, auctions can still offer great bargains. Some key things to remember when ordering collectible personalized shot glasses are to read the description and instructions carefully. Some auctions will offer personalized items that have already been engraved or printed. Some people enjoy collecting these items for their novelty value, and may have collections featuring glasses with people’s names on them, wedding or anniversary glasses, initial glasses engraved with only one letter and even personalizations that are practically undecipherable. But if you’re looking to personalize something yourself, you must be sure that’s what the auction offers.
Note if the auction is offering a choice of fonts, or just one standard type of printing. Also, look at the images available if they’re on display. If an image you want looks strange in print, it might not look much better once engraved or printed on the glass. Personalized shot glasses can also be purchased without engraving, but bearing emblems of sports teams, celebrities, countries and any type of item you can imagine.

September 26th, 2009 — Antique Crucifixes
Antique crucifixes are an interesting collector hobby, with collections that can range from very rough, early wooden carvings that barely resemble a modern crucifix, to brass or ivory depictions done more recently. While some people collect rather ornate crosses in all materials, a crucifix bears the likeness of Jesus Christ hanging upon the cross. Some churches display only this figure as the cross the figure was once fastened to has been lost through the years.
Whether an empty cross or a crucifix, few symbols stir such emotion in people today. Even those who don’t hold Christianity as a belief immediately recognized the symbol of the cross, whether it’s a cross or a crucifix that bears Jesus’ likeness. Antique crucifixes are often collected by people for their variety of designs and materials, and because it surrounds them items that help represent their faith. Some collect these along with other religious symbols like the menorah, old copies of the Bible, the Talmud or the Qu’ran, while some collect only Christian symbols of religion and faith.
When you’re looking for antique crucifixes, whether while strolling through shops or on eBay, an excellent place to find antiques, you’re faced with the problem of accurately dating a piece. You can be told it’s an antique and it may even look very old, but how do you determine the true age and worth of a piece? It can be difficult, but there are some notable distinctions among the earliest pieces, if you’re lucky enough to find any of this age.
The first crucifixes were created in the 7th century, and are easily distinguishable from older pieces. On these early crucifixes, Jesus word a shroud tunic, or a colbium, and his arms don’t seem to bend under his weight as he hangs from them. The arm are typically straight and show no signs of fatigue. This held until about the 10th century, when Jesus was no longer depicted as wearing a tunic but only a loincloth instead, and the figure of Christ on the cross was made to look more sympathetic and less triumphant, to evoke more pathos.
Antique crucifixes created during the 12th century show his arms stretched and bending under his weight, and the wound that was inflicted into Christ’s side by a soldier is clearly visible. A few crucifixes were created that bore the earlier depiction of a more strong and triumphant Jesus on one side, with the wounded and tired figure on the other.
Antique crucifixes created later emphasize Jesus’ pain and suffering, with detailed wounds and bruising. This trend continued and is still common in Latin folk art today. While Christian writers of the time wrote of a small ledge beneath the crucified person’s feet to keep the hands from pulling free of the nails, few crucifixes show little more than a sloped area beneath the feet, with early crucifixes rarely showing even a slope. Shopping for antique crucifixes will require some research on your part so that you find an authentic crucifix from the time period you’re looking for, and not a reproduction.

September 26th, 2009 — Collectibles, Decorative Arts, Miniature Collectibles
When it comes to a delightful collectible that won’t take up a lot of space, miniature collectibles are the ideal answer. These tiny little works of art require a great deal of craftsmanship and many of them feature amazingly lifelike details. You can find thousands of different kinds of miniature collectibles and because they are so small, you can easily collect thousands of them and still have room to spare. Let’s take a look at the different kinds of miniature collectibles that are available.
1. Glass Collectibles
Glass miniature collectibles are becoming increasingly popular and the way that they are produced is simply astounding. A glass maker will typically blow each piece by hand, carefully shaping and reshaping until the piece is perfect. These glass miniature collectibles are very detailed and considering the amount of work that goes into them, they are still reasonably priced. Many people like to display their collections on top of mirrors for added visual appeal.
2. Crystal Miniature Collectibles
This is a new fad, sparked in a large part by the popularity of Swarovski crystal. You can find these very valuable items at auction, and a few stores around the world carry them as well. They are usually done in very minute detail and most of the subjects are either animals or somehow related to nature. You can occasionally find other styles but by far the most common are the ones that are small crystal animals. These are typically very expensive, but they are also highly collectible.
3. Resin Miniature Collectibles
Resin collectibles are ideal for homes that have small children or for those that have a tendency to drop things. These are incredibly durable and many consider resin to be the perfect material for miniature collectibles. It is easy to work with and easy to hand paint and the level of customization and detail on these works is usually quite high. These are perhaps the most reasonably priced miniature collectibles you can find and it’s always nice to know that they will be able to hold up to the rigors of everyday life in your home.
4. Porcelain Miniature Collectibles
These are an old favorite of many and once again, the craftsmanship that goes into these tiny masterpieces is what makes them so valuable. These are also hand painted, and they are not typically mass produced, so you should be able to find a valuable piece very easily. Typically, a manufacturer will issue a limited run for their porcelain miniature collectibles and they will only make 500 or a 1000 and that’s it. These can be worth several thousand dollars, depending on the subject and the company or designer that made them. Miniature collectibles offer collectors the option of being able to easily store their treasures and display them nearly anywhere. They are perfect for those living in small apartments or for those that have limited space but would still like to be able to collect and display decorative art around their homes.
