When you think collectibles, maybe you don’t think about old paper booklets. Maybe you should. Given that no one back in their day thought they would ever be valuable, people tended to read booklets and then discard them. That is why today, they have become highly collectible. In order for something to be collectible it needs to be more than scarce, it needs to be of interest. Usually, collectibles are interesting for one of two reasons: they have a place in history, and they can be quite beautiful.

Paper booklets were printed for many reasons, ranging from the big important events of history to the little tiny everyday milestones in the lives of ordinary people. Booklets have been printed since Guttenberg invented the printing press, and have played a pivotal role in disseminating information, ranging from the protestant agitations in old Europe, to Karl Marx spreading his ideas, even including the American Revolution! Booklets can also encompass small moments, like school bulletins from days gone by, or small slices of bigger history, like how-to booklets handed out to GIs in World War Two. Advertising booklets, too, can be collectible, such as the handouts given by car dealers to support the classic muscle cars of the 1960s and 70s.
Even Great museums like the Smithsonian may have humble paper booklets in their collections. Paper booklets, reminiscent of days gone by, offer not only beauty, but point to a moment in history. Thus when you collect paper collectibles, you are getting more than a piece of paper with some printing on it. You are getting a thin slice of history.
