WW I (1914-18) Militaria Collectibles
For militaria buffs, the allure of collecting reminders of the grim war to end all wars—World War One—can be irresistible. This was the first modern war, and introduced many of the hallmarks of modern warfare, such as the machine gun, the airplane, the submarine and the tank.Discount & Bargain
World War I saw military technology introduced faster than the generals could figure out how to best use it. As a result, it was one of the bloodiest wars in history. For example, at the first battle of the Somme, the Germans attack was the first in history to face the power of the machine gun. The results were gruesome—bodies piled up so high that there was no room for the dead to fall. In contrast, high above the gruesome trench warfare, the first air warriors evoked images of chivalry and daring.
The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them. Collecting militaria is a fascinating hobby, especially for the history buff. In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian. Militaria tend to appreciate in value, and be appreciated for its historical value.
