Revolutionary War (1775-83) Militaria Collectibles
The American Revolution is not only the cornerstone of American history; it was the inspiration for many revolutions against despots all over the world, including the French Revolution. No wonder collectors of militaria prize items from this period.Discount & Bargain
The American Revolution was basically a guerilla war fought by upstart colonies against their colonial master. The magnitude of the victory is hard to imagine now; this was perhaps one of the greatest examples of a David defeating a Goliath in military history. The British, at that time the world’s greatest superpower, were at a disadvantage in several areas, however. For example, their supply lines were incredibly long, whereas the Americans were fighting on their home turf and had popular support. Many legends grew out of this period, some were, true, some otherwise. For instance, what Washington actually said while crossing the Delaware is a lot more colorful than what the history books teach.
The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them. Collecting militaria is a fascinating hobby, especially for the history buff. In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian. Militaria tend to appreciate in value, and be appreciated for its historical value.
