The appropriately named Desert Storm, which Saddam Hussein promised would be “the mother of all wars,” turned instead into a very brief, and overwhelmingly one-sided display of American and British military might. For the collector of militaria, it represents armed forces at the peak of their power. The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them.

The first Gulf War, known as Operation Desert Storm, was provoked by Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Kuwait. Ironically, Hussein had been something of an American ally during the Iran-Iraq war, and even received military aid from the US. Adding to the irony, Hussein’s diplomats completely misunderstood the western reaction to their announcement that they might invade Kuwait—because the Americans calmly announced that they would not allow this invasion, rather than jumping up and down and shouting that they wouldn’t, Hussein didn’t take them seriously. His mistake. The war, along with Hussein’s military ambition, was over very quickly.
Collecting militaria is a fascinating hobby, especially for the history buff. In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian. Militaria tend to appreciate in value, and be appreciated for its historical value.
