Civil War (1861-65) Militaria Collectibles
History, generally, records mostly darkness and conflict, but the American Civil War was one of the darkest, and most dramatic, periods in American history. This makes it very attractive to collectors of militaria. The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them.

The American Civil War is one of the defining moments in American history—and also one of the most popular periods with collectors of militaria. In military terms, this war pitted the superior technology and industrial might of the northern states against the superior generalship of the southern states. Most of the graduates of the military academies were southerners, and like Robert E. Lee, in spite of their vows to the United States, could not bring themselves to take up arms against their own states. Thus not only was the nation divided, and literally, brother fighting against brother, but individuals were torn in their loyalties as well. This particularly popular with re-enactors, who can be seen recreating great battles on the actual battlefields of Gettysburg, Shiloh, Vicksburg, and Antietam.
Collecting militaria is a fascinating hobby, especially for the history buff. In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian. Militaria tend to appreciate in value, and be appreciated for its historical value.
