1992-2001 Militaria Collectibles
1992, stretching from the Bill Clinton era to 9/11, is a fascinating period to collect for the militaria collector, yet highly affordable because its’ so recent. The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them.

While Republicans and Democrats become even more petty and partisan, few bother to notice that Clinton not only continued Reagan’s policy of upgrading the military, he modernized it into the high-tech fighting force it is today, combining the lessons from the US defeat in Vietnam to the high-tech spy wars of the cold war into the most fearsome fighting force the world had ever seen. This period, however, saw the rise of “asymmetrical warfare,” wherein the high-tech and powerful forces were under siege from low-tech guerilla fighters… and the new dark cloud on the horizon, suicide bombers. It seems like just yesterday, and indeed it was. But the period of 1992-2001 shaped the military that would face the twenty-first century, and the war against Islamic terrorists.
Collecting militaria is a fascinating hobby, especially for the history buff. In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian. Militaria tend to appreciate in value, and be appreciated for its historical value.
