1946-49 Militaria Collectibles
1946-1949 was a brief period of peace before the cold war became intense. Militaria from this period reflects the down-sizing that occurred after the second world war, and the transition to the jet age—and the nuclear age. The term militaria refers to any of the many types of military collectible, such as medals, fatigues, guns, or basically anything that would be used by, or given to, someone in the military. Militaria are divided into two types, authentic original period pieces and reproductions. Why collect reproductions, you may wonder? Typically, reenactment hobbyists—people who recreate famous battles, dressed in full period military costume—use them.

This period saw the United States consolidate its new power as a superpower, and its military transition to the age of jet aircraft and atomic bombs. America’s now-large fleet of aircraft carriers were modernized and updated, and the aircraft carrier became the foundation of American military power to this day.

In the case of militaria, it really is possible to stumble across something that will one day end up in a museum like the Smithsonian.
