November 25th, 2009 — Coin Collecting
If you are into coin collecting, then it should be true that you are also into coin collecting books. If you are a coin collector, then having the right coin collecting books is going to be a basic requirement, because you need to have basic data on the coins that you are collecting in order for you to organize your collection properly. Everyone who is new to the world of numismatics should check out the coin collecting books that are available. Purchasing a book is the first step in coin collecting, before you even purchase a coin. Participating in this type of endeavor is not just about finding coins and putting them away. The concept of coin collecting generally involves collecting specific coins and paying attention to the coins that you are collecting, which is what coin collecting books are really all about helping you accomplish.
Clearly not all coins are going to be worthy of being collected. There are pennies that people think aren’t worth anything that are actually rare, making them worthwhile. Coin collecting books are going to tell you this, but without coin collecting books you would have no idea.
For people that are interested in purchasing coin collecting books but are not sure exactly which title they should be seeking, here is a brief list of what you should be looking for. When you are going about buying coin collecting books, you should consider all of the following things:
- The coin collecting books you choose should give you a historical chronicle for the types of coins that you are actually interested in collecting.
- The coin collecting books that you choose should give you a concrete guideline for when it comes to ranging coins, because you need the information for ranging coins in order to collect coins effectively. Collecting coins without knowing how to range them is a mistake.
- The coin collecting books that you choose should also give you information regarding coins in a way that is very broad in nature. You are going to want a book on coin collecting that discusses the broad concepts associated with coin collecting. Rather than focusing specifically on valuing coins, you should choose coin collecting books that tell you the history of coins, and tell you about different coins of the world and where they come from so that you can learn about the coin collecting hobby while you are engaging in coin collecting and numismatics.
The biggest thing to consider when it comes to coin collecting books is that you want to be learning about this endeavor constantly, so choose books that are going to teach you a lot of information if you want to benefit the most from them.

September 8th, 2009 — 1925 Coin Penny, Coin Collecting
The 1925 coin penny is the 3rd rarest copper coin from Australia. According to records from their Royal Mint, this coin was struck late in the year to make sure that Australian merchants had plenty of pennies during the Christmas season. When collectors take an interest in Australian coins, one of the first coins they usually try to acquire is a 1925 penny. While it’s rare, it’s not nearly as rare as the 1930 penny so it’s much easier to find to add to a collection.
Evidence shows that if you have a 1925 coin penny, it was one of the over 117,000 struck a the Melbourne Mint. After World War I ended with many more losses and more expense than Australia anticipated, gold was valuable internationally, but the told pulled from Australia’s mines was dropping. This spoke of trouble for Australia’s economy, so a great deal of gold was imported from London in 1925. This gold was chiefly used to make sovereigns in 1925 at the Melbourne Mint. The Commonwealth offered a bonus to citizens bringing in British silver coins in June of 1925. To replace these large numbers of British coins removed from circulation, they had to strike Australian silver coins to ensure good retail trade through the Christmas season, but they didn’t produce nearly as many as they had only the year before.
The 1925 coin penny is sought by collectors, not just for its rarity, but because there are minor die varieties found in the coin. Records at the Melbourne Mint show that they were experimenting that year with dies and the hardening of dies, and it’s believed that these experiments led to the die variations often found in this coin.
The 1925 coin penny is sometimes found today by searching through bulk quantities of pennies, though finding one of these coins in fantastic condition is rare. When they are found, they go far behind the capabilities of the average collector, as the price has often been record-setting at collector auctions.
If you’re looking for a 1925 coin penny to add to your collection, online coin dealers and auctions like eBay are a great place to look. While the great condition 1925 pennies are extremely rare and extremely valuable, it’s not that difficult to find one in worn condition or very used condition. While these don’t look as good, of course, they’re still quite an addition to a serious world coin collection, or a comprehensive Australian coin collection.
When shopping for a 1925 coin penny, you might find a $1 auction and think you’ve stumbled onto a great deal for the coin you’ve been looking for, but read the fine print carefully. Because of the rarity and value of a fine condition coin, some sellers sell 1925 penny replicas for very little money. If you’d like to have a great condition replica, this is an option. But you can probably find a used 1925 penny for a reasonable price, so you might want to hold out for a genuine coin.

September 6th, 2009 — 1925 Coin Penny, Coin Collecting, Rare Coins, US Coins, Wheat Penny

Probably one of the easiest coins to acquire for a coin collection is the wheat penny. This coin was a United States penny minted from 1909 to 1958. The coin goes by many names, including the Lincoln Wheat Cent and Wheatie, and was worth 1 cent at the time it was minted. While few are worth more than that today, some uncirculated mintings have gone for thousands of dollars at auction.
Most of us who had grandparents or parents who kept pennies in jars have been able to search through those coins and find at least one wheat penny or two. The front of the penny looks indistinguishable, at first glance at least, from the pennies minted today because they still bear the bust of Lincoln on the front (or obverse) side of the coin. The back of course is different, because the two wheat stalks that were on the reverse of the wheat penny were replaced with the Lincoln memorial in 1959.
The change in the reverse design, however, isn’t the only different between the wheat penny and the modern penny. And there are even variations among wheat pennies, depending on the year the penny was minted. Some of the wheat pennies produced in the beginning featured the initials of the sculptor, Victor David Brenner, on the reverse side of the coin below the wheat stalks.
This was a cause of controversy, however, and in 1918 the initials VDB were moved to the front of the coin. You must look very closely at a wheat penny from those early years and you’ll see the tiny initials on the bottom of Lincoln’s bust, below his shoulder. The coins produced before the change was made in California are more valuable than most other types of these pennies, because less than half a million were produced by that mint before the public complained enough about the prominent initial display to have it changed.
These early pennies are called “VDB” cents due to the placement of the initials. If you happen to find a 1909 wheat penny with those initials on the back below the wheat stalks that was minted in San Francisco, California, even if the coin is in poor condition, it could be worth hundreds of dollars. Mint coins with that configuration can go for much, much more. VDB cents minted in Philadelphia hold much less value, because more were produced. The 1914-D coins are also typically quite valuable.
A wheat penny with a minting error can also be valuable, such as the 1922 penny that looks plain because the die was full and couldn’t imprint the coin, and one produced in 1955 which appears minted twice, known as the doubled die coin.
If you can find lots of wheat pennies for very little money, you might enjoy looking for these different variations. Someone without an interest in the wheat penny who puts several up for auction in a lot might not even be aware that they’re selling a gem.
