Silver Eagles

American Silver Eagles have been minted in the United States since 1986. These are the official silver bullion coins of the United States, guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of silver that’s 99.9% pure. A troy ounce is actually slightly heaver than a typical ounce of weight, because it’s not measured by weight but rather by grains. A grain is a unit of measure used where absolute precision is crucial, as in archery to weigh arrow heads, and in ballistics to weigh powder and bullets. An ounce is between 28 and 29 grains, and is a very specific number that goes out to 9 decimal places. A troy ounce is over 31 grains, in a number that goes out to 7 decimal places. A troy ounce is the measurement always used for black powder, precious metals and gemstones.

Silver Eagles have their one troy ounce weight and silver content certified by the United States Mint, and are authorized by the US Congress. A proof version of these coins is produced specifically for collectors. These coins have been produced by three mints. Coins marked with a P were minted in Philadelphia, with earlier coins bearing an S for San Francisco and the most recent silver coins marked with a W on the reverse side, which stands for West Point.

The front or obverse of Silver Eagles is based on the “Walking Liberty” design that appeared originally on half-dollars minted between 1916 and 1947. Designed the Adolph Weinman, it became a favorite and one of the best-loved coin designs in American history, so it was chosen for the Silver Eagles. The back or reverse of the coins feature a heraldic eagle.

The face value of Silver Eagles is $1, but the silver content causes the value of these coins to vary with the markets. Because of the different minting, it’s best to look into reference books to find the value of any coins you’re interested in purchasing. Because these coins have been struck in such huge numbers, the value is often not as high as one might expect, even for proofs. Most can be purchased for $25, with that number fluctuating along with the silver market prices. Some years with lower minting can go for over $100, and the boxed anniversary set issued in 2006 that went for $100 each now commands over three times that, because only 250,000 were created. Some rare dates can cost thousands of dollars, but without an up to date reference book it’s difficult to know which are more valuable.

When looking at Silver Eagles do your research and become familiar with the more rare coins, and those which can be found almost anywhere. As with most things, eBay is an excellent source for Silver Eagles of the more rare varieties. One good strategy for investors is to buy the current year’s Silver Eagles and work your way backwards through the years. This can make the collecting more fun and interesting, and give you time to investigate the more valuable minting and dates.

The Many Faces of the Collectible Gold Coin

The gold coin is one of the oldest forms of coins to be used. This is because even before the value of coins was printed on the coins themselves, the coins were valued simply for the weight of the gold which it was made out of. This made sense to trade through the use of gold coins because the gold had value as did the item or service the gold was being traded for. As countries become more established over time the gold coin was created to include more decorations including ornate obverse and reverse faces which held their own value.

The modern gold coin looks very different from the old coins. There are many different reasons for this. One of the biggest reasons for the changes in the ways that coins have been made is that they no longer have to be struck by hand. Additionally, there is value placed on the coins looking beautiful. These gold coins have also been created to commemorate events and people for the rest of the world to remember. While any good numismatist will surely know this information, it is good for all people to know the history of the gold coins and their place in the modern world.

New Striking Technology

Looking at an old gold coin it is easy to see that they were struck by hand. This is because you will see that one side shows more relief than others. This is because no matter how steady the die was, there were still blows which would catch a coin slightly off center. Slight shifts in the die between strikes could also cause double casting and other imperfections. The new methods allow for fewer strikes and more accuracy but slightly less character in the coins which are cast.

Value Placed on Beauty

Since the new coins could be struck faster and with less attempts, it was possible to offer coins with far more detail. This is why the modern gold coin places more value on beauty. Since the coins lost some of the intrinsic value when the modern mint was created, it opened the door to make the coins valuable in other ways. This is how you get coins which are designed by sculptors like the Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle or the English Gold Sovereign which was engraved by Benedetto Pistrucci.

Reasons to Mint Coins

With the ease in which the modern gold coin could be created, it cleared the way to create coins for just about any reason under the sun. These days it is common to find commemorative coins which celebrate human achievement or mourn the loss of those in tragedy. Other coins are made in order to celebrate past gold coins which are no longer in circulation. While some coins are worth millions, all gold coins are still worth at the very least the metal that they are made from. This gives them value no matter what you think about the way they were made.

Learn How to Determine Coin Values

Coin collecting is something which more people are being turned on to every year. The reasons for collecting can be because the collector wants to have a fun hobby. It can also be because the collector wants to have something which is of high value in their possession. No matter what the reason for getting started with coin collecting, it is important that you will be able to understand how to determine coin values. This is because even if you are not looking to collect coins to turn a profit, you do not want to end up with a fake or a coin which is not what it was advertised to be.

It is actually very simple to understand how to determine coin values as soon as you know what it is that you are looking for. Having the right equipment like a 10X power magnifying loop will help you in this endeavor. You will then be able to look for the kinds of things which will cause a coin to drop down the Sheldon Scale. There are three main things you will need to look for in order to determine the value that you see in a coin.

Luminescence

One of the main things which will separate a Mint State coin from an Almost Uncirculated coin is the amount of luminescence or luster the coin has. Only coins which have never been handled by human hands will still have the shine which is present right when the coin is first struck. The less luster the coin has, the less the value of the coin will be. The coin values can drop significantly even if there are no other problems with the coin. This is because the coin will simply not be as attractive to look at.

Scratches

Scratches can happen when the coin is circulated. It can also happen when the coin has been scratched by the machinery when it was struck. This is why there are different levels of the Mint State coins. While all Mint State coins have higher coin values than other grades, you will not be able to get the full value that a flawless coin would have. There is also a distinction between scratches which occur on the obverse (head) rather than on the reverse (tail). Scratches on the obverse have a much more dramatic effect on the value of the coin.

Wearing

Wearing of the coin is when the face or the obverse is when the relief of the coin is worn down. This wearing will have a huge effect on the coin values. Simply look at the amount of distinction there is in different features. The wearing happens when the coins are rubbed against each other as well as when they are affected by the environment they are in. Some coins which were stored in plastic flips from the 80s were worn down because of the PVC which was contained in the plastic. This caused them to go down in value rather than being protected.

The Three Most Valuable Morgan Dollars

There are few types of coins which vary in value more than the Morgan Dollar. The Morgan Dollars were created in 1878 and was minted until 1904. It was minted for one additional year in 1921. While there are other silver dollars which have been minted since, this is one of the best known for its wide varieties of value and the amount of errors which have surrounded the coin. The coin has a picture of lady liberty with part of her neck in profile on the obverse. The eagle is on the reverse.

When looking to buy these US dollars, it is common for people to want to purchase the ones which will be worth the most. This means looking for the Morgan Dollars which come from three specific years. This is due in part to the low mintage as well as the high number of controversy and the amount of mistakes which have occurred during the mintage years. The three most valuable years include the years of 1889, 1893 and 1895. In some years the mint is more valuable and in other years the proof is more valuable. It all depends on the amount minted and their value to the collector.

The 1889-CC Mintage:

The CC version of this coin was only able to produce 200,346 coins. This is a very low number when you consider that the majority of years included a mintage which stood more in the millions than in the hundreds of thousands. Finding one of these coins is extremely difficult to do as most of the collectors which have them are looking to hold on to them as long as possible. They know that the price of these Morgan Dollars is apt to go up significantly before they will be ready to sell.

The 1893-S Mintage:

There were only 100,000 of the 1893 Morgan Dollars which were minted. This is a number which is disputed as many will tell you that there were actually only 77,000 produced. No matter how many were actually minted, it appears that there are very few left available today. It is estimated that some of these coins which can be graded at MS 65 have a value at or above $600,000. There are other reports which value the coins at far less than that. This means you have some haggling in your future.

The 1895 Proof:

There were only 880 proofs which were made of these Morgan Dollars. To give you an idea of how much the proof is worth, the coin which was a part of a 12,000 set minted is worth $80,000. This means anyone who is holding on to one of these pieces has a small fortune waiting for them when they decide that they are ready to sell. The trick is making sure to find the right buyer and making sure to stick to your guns so that you can get the price that you deserve for having one of the rarest of all of the Morgan Dollars.

What You Need to Know About Franklin Half Dollars

There have been many different coins which have been created over the years which have paid homage to the different presidents. While some have been able to get their faces on large currency or large coins, Benjamin Franklin got his face on Franklin Half Dollars. This is not to say that the half dollars are worth only that know. In fact, you will find that the coins have become rather valuable ever since the last coin was minted in 1963. There are some which are more valuable than others. Here is a closer look.

The first thing you will need to know about the Franklin Half Dollars is what you will find on the obverse and reverse. You will also need to know what errors have been made with the series which have caused the coin to become more valuable. It is also good to know what mints were Minting the coin and their significance with the coin itself. While Franklin might not have been alive to see his face on the Half Dollar, he would have been proud to have seen such a brilliant coin created just for him.

A Look at the Faces

There are two faces to the Franklin Half Dollars. The obverse (head) has the profile of Franklin along with his neck and shoulders. The Reverse (tail) has the Cracked Liberty Bell. It is possible to find the proofs which were available for this coin because of the recent run of the coin. It was run from 1948 to 1963. While it might seem that the most valuable of the series is the oldest, it is actually the error coins which are worth the most because they have been reclaimed when possible by the government to get them out of circulation.

Errors in Production

There were a few different errors made in the striking of the Franklin Half Dollars. One of the most notable of the errors occurred when the obverse and reverse dies hit each other with no coin between them. The result is what is called the Bugs Bunny Error. This is an error on the obverse on the 1955 coin which makes it appear that Franklin has a split lip giving him the appearance of pronounced front teeth. Another error occurred on the 1961-P Proof where the Proof was double died.

Minting the Coin

The majority of these coins have been reclaimed by the government so that they could be melted down and reminted. This is because the amount of silver used in the coin made the coin worth more than the amount which was printed on the face of the Franklin Half Dollars. Those who have an error printed 1955-P have a real treasure because it is the kind of error that even the most layman can see that the split lip was not intentional on the face of Franklin. It never should have even seen the light of day before being melted and recast.
