February 4th, 2012 — Chinese Paper Money, paper money

The Chinese actually invented paper money, and the process of making it dates back to the early 9th century. Collectors are always seeking Chinese paper money due to its rich history and value, and this is a currency that is very unique. Although it is nearly impossible to find many of these notes outside of a museum, Chinese paper money is very popular and if you can get your hands on a note, you may have a treasure on your hands.
Chinese paper money was originally called “Flying Money” because it was so light, and if the owner did not hold on to it, it could easily blow away. The first notes were made from very delicate paper and they were used almost like IOUs. The owner would write down on the note what they were willing to pay for something, and the recipient could then take that to the bank to cash it. This bank draft system is very similar to our own checking system now.
Chinese paper money changed slightly when the Mongols took over. Instead of paper, the notes were then produced from silk and they were backed by a silk standard, much like the gold standard that would later be used in the Western hemisphere. This was a new idea, and in order to use the notes, the owner would have to actually deposit a set amount of silk yarn in the bank.
The silk form of Chinese paper money endured, and was used throughout the world. It has been discovered in far flung parts of the world by archeologists, but it is very rare to find any that are available to private collectors. After this period in Chinese history, the Ming Dynasty changed the currency, moving back towards paper.
The main problem they faced with this new Chinese paper money was that there was only one set denomination. This forced many to rely on coins since the notes were hard to use for smaller purchases. Due to these problems, paper money actually fell out of use and inflation rose. It wasn’t until modern times that paper money would return and become widespread.
We can thank the Chinese for our current paper money system and their innovations which are centuries old are still in use today. Collectors of Chinese paper money will typically be able to find notes for sale from other private collectors or at auctions. The advent of the internet made it easier to locate many of these notes and business is booming on online auction sites.
For those interested in collecting Chinese paper money, it is best to find notes that are in good condition. The most common are the ones from the Ming Dynasty period, but every once in awhile you can find older notes. The paper is very thin, so these notes should be treated with extreme care and sealed off from air and dust. They are an important part of monetary collectibles and should be treasured as such by collectors.

January 30th, 2012 — Coin Collecting
Coins have been treated as a method of currency for as many as thousands of years now. Collecting these little pieces of ancient history has become an extremely popular past time among many people. For many people, the idea of ancient coin collecting has become a true passion as well as a real life hunt for treasure. Because it is relatively inexpensive for a ancient coin collecting hobby to be started, you can collect a myriad of different ancient coins from all over the globe as simply as logging into the internet.
With the large variety of different types of coins that are available, from modern coins to ancient ones, it is important that you select a specific category of coins that you want to collect. You may choose ancient coin collecting or you may choose some other type of collecting depending on what you are interested in.
When getting into ancient coin collecting, what you should do is to gather coins that come from either a certain country, or a specific period of time. There are a number of inexpensive coins that you can fall back to in order to get started without spending a lot. Some examples are:
- The British Half-Farthing, which hails from between 1842 and 1869, and which was criticized for being too small of a denomination,
- The French Rooster Franc,
- The Chinese Gold Panda,
- The Silver Drachma, which was used around the time of the rule of Alexander the Great,
- The Silver Denarius, which hails from the earliest Roman Empire,
There are other ways to grow your collection of coins as well, such as by collecting:
- United States coins, including commemorative coins for example,
- Particular coins, such as coins that fall into a specific denomination or a specific type of coin, such as by collecting only Washington quarters, or only silver half-dollar coins,
- Coins with a specific theme, such as coins that feature animals, or coins that feature vehicles, or monuments, or anything else that you can think of.
- Coins with errors, since even mints are capable of making mistakes, and there are a myriad of different error coins that you can find, including coins with the wrong inscription, the wrong form, the wrong design or the wrong date on them.
Any time you are choosing a coin to collect, it is important that you determine the value and worth of the coin before you purchase it. Determining what the coin is worth is going to allow you to make sure that you get a good deal on the coins that you purchase. You should never spend more for a coin than it is worth on the market, because someone will be asking the market price, and others will be asking more. Just shop around until you find the ancient coin you want for the price it’s really worth.

January 21st, 2012 — Euro Coins, world coins

Euro coins were first put into circulation in 2002 by the European Union. There are 8 coins: 1, 2 5, 10 and 20 cent coins, as well a the 100 and 200 cent coins, which equal 1 and 2 Euros, respectively. Because these aren’t just coins used as legal tender within one country but rather all of Europe, they have a common side that shows a map of Europe, and the other side of each Euro bears a design that represents the country of its origin.
Though Euro coins weren’t circulated until 2002, some were minted as early as 1999. Earlier versions of the 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces bore a map of Europe that made it appear all the countries were islands, as the borders between them were shown as actual breaks in the landmass. The 1 and 2 Euro coins showed Europe as a cohesive nation while still depicting borders between the countries. Each nation chooses its own reverse design, while the common side with its stars, bars and map of Europe remains the same throughout.
Euros coins are interesting for collectors because of this diversity. Some countries choose their national side to be the same on each coin like Belgium has, or each coin can bear a different design, like Italy’s. Belgian Euros actually draw a great deal on the nation’s previous coin designs while some countries like France use monuments and symbols with very stylized designs on their coins.
Additionally, there are certain rules the national designs must follow. The design must contain 12 stars, the year of issue and the engraver’s initials. The national side also can’t show the denomination of the coin because that’s on the common side, nor can it repeat the word Euro unless it’s written in another alphabet, like it is on the Greek coins.
The national side on Euro coins is also locked in until the end of 2008, with no changes allowed unless a monarch depicted on the coins dies or abdicates the throne. The Vatican coins were allows to change their national side when Pope John Paul II died in 1995. They issued a different coin while the throne was empty, then in 2006 they issued coins featuring the effigy of the new Pope, Pop Benedict XVI.
Commemorative coins are released regularly. In 2007 all countries that produce the Euro created a Treaty of Rome commemorative coin that was almost identical to that of every other country. Euro coins have also been designed to make it easy for blind or sight-impaired individuals to be able to distinguish between the coins. Each has a unique edge design that can be felt to identify the amount of currency, and the sizes go up with the value of the coin.
For coin collectors, Euro coins can be a fascinating part of their hobby with so many different coins featuring so many different designs. Online auctions like eBay are a popular place to acquire the coins, which are graded similarly to any collectible coins.

December 27th, 2011 — Coin Collecting
There are thousands of different coins that you will be able to find for your own collection, even if you stick with the country that you live in. There are plenty of different mints and types based on what year the coin was minted and any possible defects the coin may have. It can be difficult for many to narrow down the exact type of coin that they are looking for.
It is important for you to give serious consideration to all of the different coins that you want to add to your collection. If you are a serious coin collector you should think about your collection as a whole before making your final decision.
Sticking With a Theme
For some, one of the most important additions to a collection is an addition that fits within the theme of the collection. Some approach coin collecting in stages, working to collect various coins from certain themes. Some people want to find coins of the same denomination. Others want coins from one specific country, or are looking for coins that were all minted in the same year. Take the time to think about all of the different themes that you have in your collection. You will generally find a cir that fits one of those themes, rounding out your collection as the perfect addition.
Finding the Right Price
Sometimes, the perfect coin for a collection comes in the form of hep erect price. You may be able to find a coin that is simply much lower in price than the prices that you will usually find for the coin. This can be the perfect addition to your collection because you are getting a great price for a great piece, adding immediate value to your collection without having to spend a large amount of money. While this is more to do with budgeting and value than the actual coin, it makes people feel good about their collection and what they have added to it.
Trading
There may be times when you simply do not have the money to add new coins to your collection. If you are serious about coin collecting, however, you are going to attempt to get those coins anyway. Consider trading some of the coins that you can live without to find the perfect coins for your collection. These coins are perfect because they will not cost you anything in terms of new money, making them easy to afford and making your collection interesting despite not having the funds for some new coins.
Truth be told, any coin is going to be able to become a part of your collection. You simply need to think about your collection as a whole to understand what types of coins are going to make you happy. Look at your collect and think about the different coins that make you happy. You will eventually find a coin that speaks to you and will become a perfect addition to your already impressive coin collection.

December 17th, 2011 — Coin Collecting, Gold Coins, Rare Coins
There are many ways in which you can decide the value of a rare coin. There are also many ways in which coins can populate a list. When it comes to rare gold coins, not even the rarest of the coins mean that they are worth the most. This is because they might not be as striking as other pieces. It might also be because they do not hold the right amount of gold within them. No matter what the reason for their place on the list, it is good to know which coins are most popular and why so that you will be able to make better decisions when it comes to your own collection.
For this list, you will get a look at the top three examples of rare gold coins and why they are so valued in the numismatic community. These include the $20 Saint-Gaudens coin which is valued for its stunning beauty as well as the fact that it is rare. Also on the list are the gold coins struck before 1835 and the gold proof coins which were struck in the 19th century. Getting to know these coins will help you to have a better collection.
$20 Saint-Gaudens Coin
The Saint-Gaudens coin was created in order to create a more beautiful national coin. It was commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt from the sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. The coin is more accurately called a double eagle because it is worth twice the $10 denomination of the eagle coin. Of course, today these coins are worth far more than just the $20 that they were originally intended. This price goes even higher when you have one of the first coins to be struck or you have a coin which is in exceptional condition.
Pre-1835 Gold Coin
The United States Mint has gone through many different incarnations of standards for coins. The original coins were distributed based on their actual value. As the value of gold increased, gold coins became more valuable than what they were intended to be. For this reason in 1835 the national government started reclaiming coins, melting them down and re-striking them with a lower amount of gold per weight. The rare gold coins which survive from before the government started reclaiming the coins makes them very valuable as a part of the nation’s history and to coin collections.
19th Century Gold Coin Proof
Proofs have always been collector’s items. This is because they are not intended for circulation. They are only intended to make sure that the coins are being made correctly. Whereas the Mint will strike millions of proofs to sell to collectors today, the proofs which were created in the 19th century were never intended to be sold. This is why for every coin, there was only a handful of gold proofs ever created. These proofs are extremely valuable rare gold coins which will only increase in value over the years. Possessing one of these coins will turn out very well for your collection.
