The Art of Coin Collecting: 5 Things to Look For

Coin collecting is nothing short of an art form, a collection style that mixes the beauty and grace of cast metal and printed paper with a strong sense of history. Coin collecting is like no other collection in the word, full of unique characteristics that drive the coin collecting market.

If you are looking to get into coin collecting you need to make sure that you know how to approach your collection. You need to know as much as you can about coil collecting values and foreign currency – the more that you know about coin collecting, the better. These five different things to look for will help you to keep a strong coin collection.

Value

One of the main things for any coin collecting individual to focus on is value. Coin collecting values continue to ebb and flow, depending on the recent advent of coin finds and the popularity of each coin. Every coin collector must know exactly how much the coins in their collection are worth. They must also understand the actual value of the coins that they are interested in.

Personal Value

While actual value is incredibly important in the world of coin collecting, so is personal value. A collection is an important extension of an individual. Most will simply collect pieces that have a strong meaning or strong pull within them. For some, it is ok to slightly overspend to get the coin that has strong personal value. You need to make sure that you are looking for both coins that are rare and coins that you are drawn to.

Changes in Foreign Currency

Foreign currency changes at a rapid pace, with European countries constantly changing or tweaking their designs. Coin collectors and paper money collectors need to make sure that they know what foreign monies are gaining popularity due to these changes.

Updates on the Counterfeit Market

There is a constant struggle in the coin collecting market that involves coin collectors and counterfeit producers. Individuals are constantly trying to make money off of the market, creating counterfeit monies in an attempt to make quick cash. You must keep updated on the counterfeit coins to look out for to ensure that you do not pay for a counterfeit coin.

Strong Collector Shops

If you are going to get into coin collecting you need to find strong and reliable coin collector shops. These shops work actively to avoid any counterfeit currencies and generally feature fair asking prices for their pieces. Collectors who form strong relationships with these types of shops and their owners will have the best collections.

The world of coin collecting is more complex than many give it credit for. Serious coin collectors must constantly surround themselves with the latest information on values, foreign currency, and counterfeit money. These collectors will have the strongest and most valuable collections of anyone, as they are sure that their collection is correctly valued and authentic.

Teaching Kids with Coin Collecting Values

Coin collecting values are something that many see as too stuffy and too adult for children who have coin collections. Parents like to make sure that their children are happy with their collection and think that worrying about values is simply too much. This is unfortunate, as something like coin collecting values can be incredibly beneficial to children of all ages.

There is something to be said for trying to turn coin collecting into an educational experience. The child already finds coin collecting interesting and may enjoy the education that they do not know they are even receiving from working with their collection. You can and should use coin collecting values as a way to teach your children about more than just coins.

Basic Math

Younger children are going to be able to learn basic math skills as they keep coin collecting. You can have them add up the values of the coins that they have after researching coin collecting values. Have them do these calculations by hand, as it will help to improve their math skills, something that will be helpful in the classroom.

Value

It is important for our children to understand that different things can have different values. Teaching them to research the value of the coins that they have and the value of the coins that they want will give them an introduction into making larger purchases. They will be more willing to take care of their collection when they understand the values of the pieces in the collection.

Investment

It is important for children to learn as much about investing as possible in the earlier stages of life. They will be able to handle investments properly when they get older because of the experience they had with investment now. Teach your child to pick out a specific coin that they want that is out of their budget and monetary reach. Challenge them to save up for the coin that they want, and provide an incentive (beyond the coin itself) for meeting the goal. It will teach your children to save and teach them to plan for larger monetary investments.

Negotiation

Negotiation is an important skill to have, and is something that can be learned through coin collecting. Give your child the opportunity to negotiate with a coin dealer. Before doing so, teach them about basic negotiation and how to be respectful while negotiating for something that you want. The more practice they get in negotiation through coin collecting, the better off they will be negotiating down the road.

At the most basic level, children will be able to enhance their math skills as they work with coin collecting values, trying to calculate the worth of their entire collection. Beyond that, kids will learn the importance of taking care of objects with high value and will work to better understand how value can change. This quickly becomes a simple lesson in investments and strategy, something that is important for people to learn as early as possible.

Coin Collecting and Your Kids

Hobbies can be one of the best things to get your kids into, as there are plenty of different values that can be taken from hobbies like coin collecting and stamp collecting. Coin collecting can be an important tool for giving your children extra education beyond the classroom, but can also be something that is fun for them to do and easy for them to handle.

If you are thinking about getting your child started on a hobby you should consider coin collecting. There are plenty of reasons for you to start a coin collection for them and to encourage them to get serious about their collection.

Letting Them Start

It is important for you to let your kids start their coin collection. While you may give them the seed money to start collecting, let them make their own informed decisions about the coins that they want to purchase. If they want to purchase a coin simply because of how it looks or something that they like about it, let them. This helps to get them interested in their collection and helps them to feel like the collection is their own.

Working on a Budget

Let your children know that their coin collecting is going to be on a specific budget. Let them know that if they want to add their own money into coin collecting, they may, but that you will only provide a specific amount of money every so often for their collection. Giving your children a small amount of money every so often will teach them to budget for pieces that they want, and will help to teach them to save – they will need to save to get the coins that they truly want.

Working on Values

Coin collecting values can teach children a wide variety of things, including simple math skills to investment and strategy skills. Have your children keep up with the value of their coins and have them understand how their value can change. This will teach them basic investment skills that will come in handy in later years.

Keeping Track

Make sure your children keep track of their collection. Have them create a written description of each piece and have them research the coin. Have them keep an updated list of the coins that they have in their collection. This will help to teach them organizational skills that they will be able to put into use in practically every other aspect of their life.

It is important to find a strong balance between making coin collecting somewhat educational and making coin collecting fun. You need to make sure that no matter what, your child enjoys what they are doing with the coins. If they fail to enjoy their experience, the educational opportunity is wasted. These tips and pieces of information will help you to better understand how to approach coin collecting with your kids.

Judging Your Collection Based on Coin Collecting Values

maximinusIf you are serious about collecting coins, then one of the things that you should be putting consideration into when collecting is coin collecting values. The thing about coin collecting values is that they let you know what price a particular coin is going for. In other words, if you are collecting coins as an investment or just for fun, the purpose of coin collecting values is to let you know what a certain coin is going for based on supply and demand. The one thing that you need to know about coin collecting values, however, is that it is never going to be an exact science. Coins are graded for different reasons and different purposes, but it does allow people to assess coins to see what they may be worth. Just keep in mind that you might get different answers from different people depending on who you turn to for grading your coin collecting values.

Placing coin collecting values on your coins is a skill that you are going to want to learn if you really want to be successful in the coin collecting hobby. If you want to make a career out of coin collecting, then you are going to have to be willing to learn how to place values on coins accordingly. You may not need to have this kind of experience in coin collecting values if you are only a hobbyist coin collector, but the more that you know about coin collecting values, the better you will fare in this hobby or industry. If you really are serious about coin collecting, then knowing how to assign coin collecting values is an absolute must. One of the ways that you can get the ball rolling when it comes to coin collecting values is to buy a book on the subject. Keep in mind however, that these books change every year or so, and you need to stay up to date in order to have the best and most accurate coin collecting values assigned to your collected coins.

If you end up coming upon a coin that piques your interest on the spur of the moment, you are not going to want to have to second guess your ability to assign coin collecting values. You do not want to purchase the coin an end up unhappy with it later, nor are you going to want to pass it up only to find out that it would have been a valuable addiction to your collection. Keeping a coin grader or coin trader on retainer is not the most cost effective option, making it ideal to simply learn the art of coin collecting values so that you can value your own coins.

The more you learn about coin collecting values, the better your collection will grow to be. Staying informed about coin collecting values will help make sure your coin collection grows in the right direction.
