You can even have them handed down to you from people you know including family members. One of the ways which is becoming more popular to get the coins collectors want is to attend coin auctions. These are held throughout the country in many different cities. In fact, the major cities throughout the United States might have a few different auctions that they have throughout the year.
The way that an auction works is that you will be able to see coins which you normally will not find at coin shops. Best of all, everything is for sale. This means if you have the funds to be able to purchase the coin, you will be able to purchase it at a price which is below what the market values it at. In some cases you will purchase the piece above the valued rate, but for the most part you will be purchasing these coins at a slightly discounted rate which will allow you to find the coins that you are really hoping to buy.

The ANA (American Numismatic Association) is one of the most trusted associations for coin collectors. It represents the ethics and the standards that all numismatics should strive for. The auctions which are represented by the ANA are well known to have some of the best pieces you can find. Best of all, you will have a very low chance of running into any counterfeits or pieces which are graded incorrectly. This way you will be able to get a coin which is actually worth the price you purchased it for, if not more so.
Seeking Out the Coins
When you go to a coin auction, you will be given an opportunity to look at all of the coins before the actual selling begins. This is your opportunity to take a more in depth look at the coins you would like to purchase. You will be able to ask questions and take the time to look up the coins in your coin book or through the internet on a smart phone or laptop. Many will seek out specific coins that they need or want at the auction and this is the time to find them. This way you will be able to make a better offer when you are bidding on the coins you want.
Bidding at the Auction
Bidding at a coin auction can be intimidating the first time that you do it. You do not want to drive up the price, but at the same time, you do not want someone else to outbid you. There is a strategy which you can employ which will help you to get better bids on the coins you want. Simply pay attention to the bids others are making before making a bid. If there are two people battling for the coin, do not get involved until one has bested the other. If the price has already gone too high for your tastes, opt out of the bid.
