Start with your pocket change
Start out by studying coins you pull from your pockets, or failing that, some old coins from your attic, on your floor, or out in public. As a novice coin collector, it makes no sense to spend a lot of your money on coins if you do not understand their nuances thoroughly. Spend a good bit of time getting acquainted with the more ordinary coins. Familiarize yourself with the designs and letterings and images, their types and styles.
Choose the coin types you want to collect
To make the hobby of coin collecting more interesting, choose coins of a type that you have a real interest in. Bullion coins made of gold or silver as an example can attract collecting investors due to the market worth and appeal of Bullion.
Very old coins such as Roman coins, Byzantine coins and Celtic coins are capable of being quite interesting when it comes to collectors that are interested in collecting not only coins of the world, but also coins that come from history and from long forgotten ancient civilizations. There are a wide variety of different types of coins that are available in this market. What this means is that all that you really have to do is to perform a little bit of searching in order to determine what it is that you really want as a coin collector and enthusiast.
Organize your collection and maintain your coins of the world
If you are simply gathering your coins in a haphazard way, then you are not really collecting coins, but rather you are simply hoarding them. Without taking the time to organize your coin collection, you could actually end up missing out on some truly valuable additions to your collection.
You are going to want to purchase either coin collecting software, or a coin catalog that will allow you to arrange all of your coins of the world in a logical fashion. Software programs are designed to help you keep your coins in order using up to date database listings where you can search by mint mark, date, type, denomination, year and other details of the coins that you are collecting.
You are also going to want to buy all of the necessary supplies for collecting coins of the world, as well as for storing and displaying them. This is going to include coin albums, coin display cases, slab coin holders, envelopes, coin tubes and boxes. All of these supplies have unique purposes and uses, so make sure that you are choosing the ones that are going to help you the most when it comes to organizing and storing and displaying your unique coin collection.

You are probably already aware of the fact that a coin is simply a metal disc that has been issued by your local government for public consumption as a form of currency. There are a wide variety of different types of coins, however, and not all coins are currently being accepted as being currency that is capable of being spent as a payment for transactions on a day to day basis. One of the things that you can consider when it comes to coin collecting is coin parts and anatomy, and how different coins are made from different materials and made in different ways accordingly.
So what are the main coin parts, and that is the purpose of each part of the coin?
Sides
The coin has two different sides, the head side and the tail side. Technically, the sides of the coin are known as the obverse side and the reverse side of the coin. In general, the bust image or portrait on the coin and the year of the mintage are both engraved on the coin’s obverse side. The face value for the coin is what is pressed on the other side of the coin, the reverse side.
Rim
The rim of the coin is the raised area that runs all the way along the edge of the coin. The rim of the coin can be found both on the obverse side of the coin and the reverse side of the coin as well.
Legend
The legend on the coin is what you call the inscription or any lettering that you find on the coin such as the country where the coin was issued and the face value for the coin.
Field and Relief
The field on the coin is the coin’s flat portion. The relief on the coin is the coin’s raised portion, or any design elements on the coin that are made during the process of stroking. Some examples of the relief portions of the coin include the legend of the coin, the portrait of the coin and the rim of the coin.
Edge
Contrary to the coin’s rim, which runs along the edge of the entire coin, the edge itself is the true actual edge on the coin. The edge could possibly have a number of different decorative types. For example, the edge may be plain, it could be reeded, ornamented or it could be grooved.
Portrait and Date
Finally, the portrait is the image on the obverse side of the coin, which is typically a bust of a person who is significant such as a president or another ruler. The date of the coin also appears on the obverse side of the coin, and it is responsible for indicating when the coin was actually minted.

Collecting coins is simply a hobby or a passion for some people, but for other people it is truly a science. For at least the past century, people have been taking this hobby much more seriously and now there are a myriad of different coin collecting book options to choose from because people from all over the world are writing guides on coin collecting. The people that write these coin collecting books are doing roaring business within the industry because there is a great amount of importance in having a well written coin collecting book to value your coin collection.
Each coin collector tends to have a favorite coin collecting book depending on what their individual needs are. There are general guides and there are also more specific coin collecting book options such as those that focus on coins from a specific period of time or from a specific country around the world. The best coin collecting books are those that provide images, because these images make it possible to line your coin up with the real thing, determining not only whether or not you have properly identified your coin but also to see what grade your coin is based on eyeballing it.
Some coin collecting books allow you to search for coins by certain features, such as coins featuring a face, or a monument, or a sword and shield. Some people collect coins based on these features, so being able to identify them this way is very useful for some coin collectors. In other words, being able to consult a coin collecting book whenever you need advice or feedback on a particular coin, can be really useful and helpful for most coin collectors.
Having a coin collecting book is truly an asset if you are interested in collecting coins. Not only will it help you identify the coins in your collection, but it will also make it possible for you to place a value on each of your coins so that you can determine what your collection is worth. Having values for all of your coins is not actually necessary if you are just collecting for fun, but it is still really useful to know what you have and what your coins are actually worth, especially if you have any valuable coins in your collection that should be insured for safe keeping.
Coin collecting has managed to become a profitable endeavor. Having a coin collecting book that lets you know what your coins are worth and what types of treasures you have collected is definitely a good thing. It allows you to know how far you’ve come in your coin collection, and also gives you a positive outlook on where you can take your coin collection in the future.

October 19th, 2009 — Coin Collecting, world coins
Most people who begin to collect coins actually do so by collecting regional coins from their own mother country. So for example, if you are from the United States, then you may want to collect United States coins first and foremost. This is because you are already familiar with the coin denominations where you live, making the collection much easier to put together. This is definitely a great way for you to begin when you are just learning how to collect coins, but as your coin collection grows, you may want to create a world coin collection rather than just a local one. World coins are often just as easy to come by, and they offer new facets to your coin collection no matter which world coins you decide to collect.
You will find coins coming from nearly every single country all over the world. You should begin to collect coins based on what information you can find. If you cannot find information on a particular type of world coin, that does not mean that it is rare, but just that it will require some extra work for you to find the worth of the coin. There are a number of websites and other publications that will help you look at the world coins that are available to you and your world coin collection.
When you finally begin to collect world coins, you will discover that there is a whole new world waiting for you. You will learn about the history and the culture that influenced each individual world coin, for example. You are going to learn about each country where you find a world coin and you are going to learn about what inspired those world coins into creation.
There are fewer dealers out there that will have world coin opportunities for you, so world coins are often more rare than United States coins. To some investors, world coins do not make good investments, but to other investors, they do. Collecting world coins is going to require a lot of time, thought and research. You need to read coin collecting books, online guides, websites, newsletters, magazines and anything else that you can get your hands on to read so that you can become well versed in everything that the world coin realm has to offer you. You need to understand how foreign currencies and the United States dollar stack up against one another.
If you are looking for a widely circulated world coin, consider pennies from each country all over the world. These coins are valuable to someone that collects for the sake of collecting but not necessarily for the sake of investing. Collecting world coins with small values is a great way to grow your collection without spending too much money, so consider this if you are just getting your world coin off the ground and want a lot of unique coins without a big investment.

Coin dealers, just like any other type of dealer or business, requires stock that they can sell to the public. Rather than obtaining or acquiring their stock from a factory or manufacturer however, they obtain their coins from the public instead. Classic types of rare coins have to be acquired from more advanced collectors or from auctions but lesser rare coins can still show up just about anywhere including in your normal pocket change. Below are some coins that are often ignored by your average person despite being capable of bringing in real money, should a hobbyist notice it and offer it for sale to people interested in rare coin collecting.
If it weren’t for the diligence of some rapid coin collectors interested in rare coin collecting, many of the coins in the following list would go completely unnoticed. These coins are often found by way of careful scrutiny.
- The 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter, on coins featuring an extra leaf.
On some of the Wisconsin quarters minted in 2004, there is an extra leaf either below the corn husk or at the very base of the husk. The value of these coins ranges from $50 to $100 dollars.
- The 2000-P Sacagawea Dollar from Cheerios
These coins were placed randomly in a number of Cheerios cereal boxes after being packed in protective plastic sheets. These coins exhibit more detail than the later production coins. The value of these coins is as yet undetermined.
- The 5c Doubled Monticello from 1939
This is a 1939 Jefferson nickel, and while this coin is relatively easy to find, locating the doubled die reverse is not going to be as easy. The value for these coins is between $30 dollars and $500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.
- D/horizontal D 5 cent piece from 1942
This Jefferson coin is not the same Wartime silver alloy, but rather it is the previous variety which is a copper and nickel alloy. More than 14 million coins were minted, which was a fairly large mint for the time period. The coins struck from the die with the error are relatively elusive, but still possible to be found. The value for these coins is between $30 dollars and $500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.
This is perhaps the kind of the doubled dies, as it has spectacular doubling. They were originally discovered in coin rolls. Nearly the entire output from the improperly struck die managed to reach to circulation, so you will really never known when one of these true beauties is going to show up. The value for these coins is between $500 dollars and $1,500 dollars depending on the quality of the coin.

If there are people in your life who you think would enjoy beginning coin collecting, then there are some great resources that can help.
Many websites assist parents and friends of those who are interested in beginning coin collecting to learn the basics about coins and what’s available. Once a person, including a child, is educated about coins, they may begin a fascinating hobby that will interest them well into adulthood.
What about the great site about starting a coin collection for four dollars? It’s a simple and fun way to get a child (or an adult) interested in starting a coin collection and excited about what they might find.
Simply collecting pocket change for several months can be another fun method for sharing the love of coins. Without examining it, dump your change into a jar or bucket every day for some time.
When you’ve collected a substantial number of coins, bring the beginning coin collection novice in and have them examine each coin. If you’ve got enough knowledge to help them identify unusual coins, then you can help them divide the promising from the not so promising.
If you don’t trust your expertise, use the simple rule of finding the unusual and looking them up. Look for very old dates, different fronts or backs of common coins, and unusual words on coins.
A beginning coin collecting activity of searching online or studying a basic coin collecting book is a great way to learn about coins and spark some interest.
The website for the U.S. Mint is a great site for the beginner, or even the more advanced collector. It has a wealth of information, news, history, games and cartoons about coin collecting, and even a “collector’s club” for those who are beginning coin collecting or are simply interested in learning about coins.
The MegaPenny Project is a great look at how you can focus your collecting. It has what may be the most in-depth look at a single coin that you can find online. The analysis of size, weight and comparisons makes the subject come to life.
The Ancient Coins for Education project offers teachers and others interested in educating children complete lesson plans centered on an “archeological simulation” where ancient coins become a learning tool once they are discovered by an educator.
Children will not only learn about coins, but will learn about archaeology and ancient life as well.
Another approach to beginning coin collecting is to choose a particular coin and do some in depth research with a child or new collector. The Morgan dollar, for example, is a fascinating coin with an interesting appearance and an unusual history.
There are two different types of Morgan dollars since the coins were struck in two different ways. The finishes are so strikingly different, it’s a pleasure for those beginning coin collecting to work with them.
There are other fun coins to introduce to a beginner, like the new Lincoln Rail Splitter penny. You might also begin with a study into the “heads” and “tails” of coins and how to tell the difference when the front has no portrait.

If you are looking to earn a profit with a unique type of collection, then one of the collection options that you may want to consider is rare coins. When you are collecting coins for the purpose of an investment, then it is probably going to follow that you are interested in unique and rare coins. Rare coins are the types of coins that you can collect that will offer a much greater value. Many people have created quite a rich return just buying and selling rare coins throughout their lives.
The thing that makes coins so valuable in the first place is how readily available they are. If there is an extremely limited selection of a certain coin product, then it may become pricier as a result. If the coins have been destroyed or melted down or if only a limited number of the coins were produced, then these factors will contribute to how expensive the coin will be, and how much you can sell it for as a result.
Rare coins are coins that are capable of bringing in a high yield in terms of investing. There have been collections of rare coins out there that have sold for as many as several millions of dollars even when the initial cost to collect the coins was a fraction of that. The collectors selling these collections clearly made wise choices regarding their rare coin collections and they paid attention to detail, paying off handsomely in the end.
When it comes to collecting coins that are rare of valuable, you are going to need to be really diligent when it comes to watching out for coins that are not real. The greater that the value is for the coin, the more likely it will be that someone has made a duplicate in order to make some money that they do not deserve. It is not going to profit a counterfeiter to reproduce a coin that is less valuable so they tend to counterfeit the more expensive coins so that a single coin can net a much, much larger return. There are books capable of dealing with this subject specifically, and so you should make sure that you have the right resources on hand so that you can distinguish the real coins from the fakes when you are collecting rare coins of any kind.
Rare coin collecting can be a truly wonderful hobby as well as a powerful tool for investing as well. It is vitally important that you keep yourself informed on all of the current trends when it comes to the world of coins. You should enjoy your collection and you should allow it to bring you a great amount of joy and investment profits for many years to come as well.
