4 Tips for Buying Better Auction Coins

Anyone who is serious about buying collectible coins has more than likely attended at least one auction. These are great places to be able to see a wide variety of different coins all in one place. Even better, you will have the opportunity to buy the coins you see at auction. The problem is that after some auctions you might get home and realize that you bought coins for over price or the coins you bought were not actually the grade that they were advertised. This is something no one wants to face. So, what do you do to prevent it?

There are few tips you can follow so that you can you will be able to get better auction coins. If you follow these tips, you will be able to buy the kinds of coins that you know are available at auction.

1. Go to Industry Approved Auctions

The best auctions to go to are those which have been recognized by the industry as being great places to buy coins. The absolute best auctions for you to attend are those which are hosted by the American Numismatic Association (ANA). These auctions are very strict in their standards and will have a zero tolerance policy on anyone who is trying to knowingly sell coins which are fakes or are graded above what they actually are.

2. Show up Early

The best thing that you can do when buying auction coins is to show up early. This is because you will get the opportunity to buy exactly the coins you are looking for. Take your time to look over the stock. Make sure that you know which coins you want to bid on and make sure that they are in the condition that you want them to be in. If you are lucky, you will find coins which are graded below their actual grade.

3. Set a Limit

When you start bidding on auction coins, it is pretty easy to get caught up in the moment. You will start a bidding war with another buyer and before you know it, you have spent way more than you intended. You can avoid this by simply setting limits for each coin that you want to buy. Even if you do not get to buy one coin, it is not license to go wild on another coin. Always stick to the limits that you set so that you will be able to get a good return on the coin that you bought later on.

4. Find Out the Policy

Often at auctions they will have a policy that if you bought something which was claimed to be one grade and it turns out to be another that you can return the coin. Not all auction coins come with this kind of a guarantee. It is a good idea to make sure you know what the policy is before you spend too much on a coin which is graded incorrectly. If they do not have a return policy, spend more time examining the coin.
