When you are deciding whether or not you would like to add a specific coin to your collection, one of the things that you are going to want to take into account is rare coin values. The rare coin values that you find will ultimately be determined by availability of the coin, demand on the coin, condition of the coin and also the grading for the coin.
Demand and Availability
The demand on a specific coin is going to be capable of significantly increasing the rare coin values. A common coin which is prized highly by collectors is going to have a much higher value than common coins that are sought by fewer collectors. Rare coin values often come from the fact that rare coins have much higher levels of demand in comparison to other common coins.
For example, despite their age, some older Roman and Greek coins are relatively inexpensive in nature simply because they are so abundant. You should also keep in mind that the current availability of the coin is not indicated by the number of coins that was actually minted, as there are situations where coins are destroyed or become lost, affecting the availability of the coin.
Condition
Just a very small difference in a coin’s condition is capable of making a really large difference in its price. Coins that have been used as currency can become worn naturally, and so uncirculated coins are generally capable of fetching a much higher price in comparison to the coins that have been circulated.
For example, a 1913 Buffalo Nickel that was uncirculated has been known to fetch 10 times more in mint condition than a similar coin that is no longer in mint condition because it was circulated.
There are a number of grading services that evaluate the condition of a coin in order to confirm its authenticity and value. There are four factors that are used to find rare coin values, including:
- Strike – Coins that are well struck are coins that have a distinct impression in their metal.
- Visual Appeal – Some coins have a luster that is soft and satin while others are more reflective in their surface. Some coins are actually colorful while others are plainer. Make sure that you are aware of what appeals specifically to you before you make a purchase.
- Luster - Dull coins are not as appealing as bright and dazzling luster. However, coins that have been doctored or cleaned are generally avoided by many serious collectors. If you find a coin that has a bright luster despite having been circulated, it has more than likely been polished.
- Wear - Deterioration can significantly decrease a coin’s value, including hairlines and contact marks. Wear is going to first occur on the coin’s highest points in most cases.

People buy silver bullion coins for a few different reasons. Some buy them because of the precious metal content as an investment and buffer against inflation. Some people buy them because they fear that one day our popular currency will become worthless, and they want to be prepared with the only kind of money that would likely be worth anything in that case. They know they could use gold and silver coins to barter for goods and services if paper money were repudiated. And some buy bullion coins because they’re coin collectors and they want to add these brilliant pieces to their collections.
If you want to buy silver bullion coins for investment purposes, then your true investment in the silver lies in not how many coins you buy necessarily, but how many ounces of silver you end up owning because of those coins. In this case, it doesn’t matter if the coins can be used as currency, so foreign coins which contain high amounts of silver are as good an investment as United States coins, or vice versa, depending on where you live. The age of the coins is irrelevant, too.
Silver bullion coins minted since 1965 contain stamps showing the purity of the silver within them and the silver coins pre-dating this do not, but that makes them no less valuable as an investment. Many people think the only silver bullion coins used in the US are dollars like the 1 ounce American Eagle, which is a popular collector’s coin. But before 1965, several types of coins contained 90% silver, like dimes, quarters and half-dollars. These and coins like the American Silver Eagle, which contains 1 ounce of pure silver, are a good investment and in a worst-case scenario where the value of paper money dropped substantially, these coins could be used as money.
Survivalists who invest in silver bullion coins typically purchas as many coins dating since 1965 as possible. They believe that it’s likely that one day our money system will collapse and the only real currency that one could survive on would be silver and gold bullion. Since the silver content is stamped on each coin produced since 1965 showing that it’s an ounce of pure silver, they believe that it will be easier to get people to accept those coins as payment in the event of a financial collapse. For these purposes, they’ll typically buy $1000 face value bags, or bags in smaller increments, rather than individual coins.
For collectors, the earlier coins are often considered junk coins, because they have little numismatic worth. Silver bullion coins for collectors are typically silver proofs or coins in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, only if they really want the coin and can’t acquire a mirror-like proof. If you’re looking on eBay for collector coins, a popular place to find them, you’ll need to do some research on the individual silver coins so you can tell the difference between BU and proofs, as often they look similar.

Liberty Head silver dollars have been referred to in many different ways over the years. First they were called Buzzard Dollars, because no one really liked the original design of the rather scrawny eagle on the back. The large, heavy coins were also referred to as Cartwheels, and are today most commonly referred to as Morgan Dollars, after their creator, George T. Morgan.
Though when they first appeared in 1878 these coins weren’t popular at all, today Liberty Head silver dollars are one of the most collectible coins in the world, among silver and all other types of coins. When these coins were minted, the dollar coin had been discontinued for 5 years already, with Americans showing a clear preference for paper dollars. The coins were minted because of the large silver surplus created by the purchase of silver from the Comstock lode in Nevada, to keep Nevada’s economy above water. To use the silver, these coins were commissioned.
George Morgan was an Englishman who designed the Liberty Head silver dollars, and despite his post as US Chief Engraver after that, one he held for over 40 years, these coins were the only American ones he ever designed. Because these coins weren’t popular and few people used them, production stopped in 1904. Many of the coins were melted down in 1918 to help Great Britain’s war efforts. Then more were minted in 1921, but only for a brief time before the Peace Dollar was minted to commemorate the end of the war, and quickly became the most popular silver dollar in America.
The Liberty Head silver dollars continued to be melted town, and the public showed little interest in collecting them until about 1972, when a large collection of over 400 bags of the rare Carson City minted dollars was discovered. The collection ended up selling at auction for over $7 million dollars. While all these dollars are collectible, some are more valuable and sought out than others.
The most rare Liberty Head silver dollars are those minted in 1895. Called the “king” of these dollars, some have sold for over $100,000 at auction. What makes these coins particularly valuable is their rarity, and the mystery surrounding them. Twelve-thousand 1895 coins were struck, according to mint records, yet only about 80 have ever been accounted for, and all of those were proofs. None of the regular circulation coins have been recovered. Whether they were ever minted at all comes into question, but doesn’t lessen the mystique of the coin.
Liberty Head silver dollars, aside from the 1895 strike, aren’t particularly rare because millions of these coins were minted. They were larger than typical coins, and the original eagle design wasn’t popular, yet today they’re consider one of the most collectible US coins available. Online auctions are an inexpensive and ideal way to purchase these collectible coins, whether you want to purchase them to begin investing in silver, or to make the Liberty Head silver dollars an important part of your coin collection.

If you’re a coin collector, specifically a Canadian coin collector, you might enjoy looking for a 1971 Canadian fifty cent piece to add to your collection. The trick to this is finding the right fifty cent piece to know whether the coin is worth merely 50 cents, or if it’s a more valuable one that could be worth a little bit more, maybe two dollars or more, depending on the current price of silver. The real value in these coins isn’t the monetary value, though, rather it’s the value for collectors when they find this fairly uncommon coin.
Rarity isn’t the only factor in rating the value of a coin, or almost all Canadian fifty-cent pieces would be worth more. A Canadian fifty-cent pieces, whether it’s a silver minting for collectors only or one designed for general circulation, has much the reputation in Canada as the $2 bill does in the United States. They’re both real money, but some people doubt their legitimacy because they’re rarely seen and not commonly used. The 1971 Canadian fifty cent piece is distinguished from other fifty cent pieces only because it’s a silver half-dollar produced when other half-dollars were alloys.
Ironically, even though some people look at a Canadian fifty cent piece and wonder if it’s a real, legitimate coin, the fifty cent piece was the first coin the Dominion of Canada ever produced. The first domestically minted Canadian coins were fifty cent pieces featuring an effigy of King Edward VII, struck in 1908. The reverse of the coin features Canada’s Coat of Arms. Canada still produced fifty cent pieces today, but they’re still rarely found in regular circulation because most Canadians, when presented with one, keep it because of its rarity. The 1971 Canadian fifty cent piece is, of course, more worth keeping than any of the others because of its silver content.
By 1971, Canadian half-dollars were made from a nickel alloy, with no silver content. But in April 1971 they minted some silver fifty-cent pieces designed for collectors specifically, and not intended for general circulation, even though they bear the same value as other fifty-cent pieces as far as currency is concerned. Even despite its silver content, though, this fifty cent piece isn’t necessarily a great investment coin—gold bullion coins are for more valuable as investments—but it can be an interesting addition to a collection of coins from Canada or all over the world.
If you’re looking for a 1971 Canadian fifty cent piece, the chief thing you’ll need to ask is whether the coin is a standard half dollar or a silver half dollar. If the seller is unsure and the picture is unclear, you may want to purchase the coin elsewhere, because the fifty cent pieces from various years look virtually identical, giving them each very little value as collectibles. The coins are probably best found in uncirculated condition, usually sold individually rather than in lots, because they were designed as collector items.

This practice has made the word rare almost meaningless on eBay and other online sites. So to find truly rare gold coins, you’ll need to do a little research on the coin that’s offered in the auction, as well as into the seller’s past auctions.
Have a look at the seller’s feedback. Does every auction represented there shout “Rare!” from the rooftops? Also, you can search on the specific coin that’s offered to see which others sellers offer it and what they have to say about it. Then you’ll want to research the coin online to find whether its truly rare, or the use of the word was just an advertising tactic. Truly rare gold coins won’t be found in hundreds or sometimes even dozens of auctions at one time, because of their rarity.

Palladium coins are extremely rare and they are one of the most valuable types of money that you can collect. If you have never heard of palladium before, or if you are curious as to what these coins are, there are a few things you should know. First, palladium is a type of metal that was discovered in 1903. It is very light in color, almost a silver/white shade. The man who discovered it, William Hyde Wollaston, named it after the giant Pallas, who according to Greek mythology, was slain by the goddess Athena.
This form of metal is considered to be a subset of the platinum group, making it very rare. Palladium is often used for coinage and bullion due to the fact that it melts very easily and is much easier to work with than other members of the platinum group. Coins made of this metal will resist tarnishing well and make wonderful display pieces since they are not as affected by open air as other metals.
Many countries have minted palladium coins, and strangely enough, Tonga was one of the first to do so. In 1967 they produced a run of these coins and collectors that are seriously involved in precious metals will always try to find at least one of these coins. However, the most collectible palladium coins in the world are the ones that were produced by the Soviet Union. Other countries that produced palladium coins include Canada, France, and Slovakia.
In addition to Russian varieties, there is another extremely rare palladium coin that is difficult to find. The Royal Canadian Mint produced what they called the Big Bear and Little Bear Constellation coins, with a run of only 1200 coins total. This is considered to be one of the smallest runs in the history of recent coin making. There are a total of four different coins in this run, and each one corresponds to a specific season. Collectors that can get their hands on these are considered to be very lucky.
When you’re shopping for palladium coins, there are a few things to remember. First, the dealer should be reputable. If you are dealing with an unknown, there is always a chance for fraud. Always ask for certification, references and do your due diligence before spending money. If a palladium coin is priced well below the current market value for palladium, this is definitely cause for concern. Remember, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.
In addition to these steps, if you are dealing with a serious investment in a palladium coin, we highly recommend having a third party appraise the piece. This can help you determine the actual value of the coin and the appraiser will be well trained to spot any potential errors that may indicate that the coin is not legitimate. Don’t sink any money into palladium coins unless you are certain that they are authentic. Otherwise, you may find out too late that your investment is worthless.

The Russian ruble collector is likely someone who doesn’t just love coins, but has an interest in Russia’s heritage as a country. One of the problems with purchasing rubles is that counterfeiting has always been a common thing with Russian coins. And not just to produce fake money to use, but rather to simply copy a design for novelty. If you find one of these “authentic forgeries” you’ll probably pay quite a high price, as they’re valuable today. But other counterfeits, like circulated coins, are worth nothing.
The Russian ruble is also represented with paper currency, which saw less counterfeiting than the coins. It wasn’t uncommon for the early rubles of the 15th century to be counterfeited by the people, as they were merely oddly shaped bars of silver and easily reproduced. When coins were minted with designs, forgery became more difficult for common people. But the wealthy often ordered coins reproduced for them to keep as collector items.
One way to spot these collector forgeries in a Russian ruble is to look at the edge. Often there will be markings on the edge that you won’t find on an authentic Russian coin. Because these forgeries weren’t created for the purpose of purchasing goods, but instead to be kept as collector items, they’re usually in excellent condition and are very valuable, though they have no worth as currency.
Another way to detect a forged Russian ruble is to learn a little about the history of Russia and her coinage. With a little bit of reading and research, you can spot which rubles are the most rare and unlikely to be found in large lots where people buy coins, either from collectors or in places like eBay online.
The rarest Russian ruble, for instance, is one that coin collectors might want to own, even though it’s virtually impossible. The silver Constantine is the rarest. Only a few are known to be in existence, and the last genuine Constantine was sold for the largest price ever earned by a single coin in auction.
The value of this coin springs from the fact that the Russian ruble was minted when it was believed that Constantine would take over power after Alexander’s death. But Constantine abdicated the throne, after some coins were already created. For collectors who like the history behind this particular coin and would like it represented in their collection, a reproduction can be found for an affordable price, just to have as a novelty.
A ruble can be a great piece for a coin collector or even someone who collects things representing Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s diverse history. Whether paper rubles or coins, the designs on both show some of the best Russian engraving art created. The ruble isn’t much of an investment for its currency value, as the value is low compared to other world currencies. But as a piece for a coin collector or someone interested in Russia’s history, a Russian ruble can be a valuable part of a collection.

American Silver Eagles have been minted in the United States since 1986. These are the official silver bullion coins of the United States, guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of silver that’s 99.9% pure. A troy ounce is actually slightly heaver than a typical ounce of weight, because it’s not measured by weight but rather by grains. A grain is a unit of measure used where absolute precision is crucial, as in archery to weigh arrow heads, and in ballistics to weigh powder and bullets. An ounce is between 28 and 29 grains, and is a very specific number that goes out to 9 decimal places. A troy ounce is over 31 grains, in a number that goes out to 7 decimal places. A troy ounce is the measurement always used for black powder, precious metals and gemstones.
Silver Eagles have their one troy ounce weight and silver content certified by the United States Mint, and are authorized by the US Congress. A proof version of these coins is produced specifically for collectors. These coins have been produced by three mints. Coins marked with a P were minted in Philadelphia, with earlier coins bearing an S for San Francisco and the most recent silver coins marked with a W on the reverse side, which stands for West Point.
The front or obverse of Silver Eagles is based on the “Walking Liberty” design that appeared originally on half-dollars minted between 1916 and 1947. Designed the Adolph Weinman, it became a favorite and one of the best-loved coin designs in American history, so it was chosen for the Silver Eagles. The back or reverse of the coins feature a heraldic eagle.
The face value of Silver Eagles is $1, but the silver content causes the value of these coins to vary with the markets. Because of the different minting, it’s best to look into reference books to find the value of any coins you’re interested in purchasing. Because these coins have been struck in such huge numbers, the value is often not as high as one might expect, even for proofs. Most can be purchased for $25, with that number fluctuating along with the silver market prices. Some years with lower minting can go for over $100, and the boxed anniversary set issued in 2006 that went for $100 each now commands over three times that, because only 250,000 were created. Some rare dates can cost thousands of dollars, but without an up to date reference book it’s difficult to know which are more valuable.
When looking at Silver Eagles do your research and become familiar with the more rare coins, and those which can be found almost anywhere. As with most things, eBay is an excellent source for Silver Eagles of the more rare varieties. One good strategy for investors is to buy the current year’s Silver Eagles and work your way backwards through the years. This can make the collecting more fun and interesting, and give you time to investigate the more valuable minting and dates.

If you are interested in collecting paper money, Colonial money is one of the hottest tickets going right now. When the first US colonies were formed, the nation and its currency system were still in their infancy. It was decided that paper money would be used, and gradually, currency was printed and distributed for use. Today, colonial money is usually worth much more than its face value, provided that it is original and not a reproduction. Here are some tips on how to tell whether or not you have an authentic piece of colonial history.
1. Check the Signature
Colonial money was always designed to have at least one signature on the note. You may need to look carefully to determine whether or not a signature is present, but if you can’t find even one, chances are you may be dealing with a reproduction. The color of the signature should be in red ink.
2. Is it Numbered?
Colonial money was always numbered to help them keep track of how many bills were in circulation. Once again, if you are dealing with an authentic note the ink color will be red and the number will be very noticeable. Age made have faded the note slightly, but you should be able to tell that the ink was once a red color.
3. Look at the Writing
Typically, colonial money featured a handwritten signature, and some bills may have other handwriting on them as well. This is actually quite important, and is a big clue to the authenticity of the note. If the handwriting is the in the same color as the rest of the bill, there is a very high chance that you are in fact dealing with a reproduction.
4. Look for the Stamp
In most cases, reproductions that are intended merely for home use will carry a stamp that says “facsimile.” This is done to help people get a better idea of the colonial money that was used, but they are not intended to be collector items. While some reproductions may not have this stamp, the majority should.
5. Find the Watermark
Even in the height of the colonial period, when technology still was struggling, watermarks were added to bills to help determine whether or not they were authentic. You can use that same watermark to help you determine whether or not you have authentic colonial money on hand. Hold the bill up to a light source to see if you can spot the watermark. If you can’t chances are you have a reproduction.
6. Take it to an Expert
If you plan on investing in a colonial money note, it is best to have it examined by an expert to determine the authenticity of the note. They will be well versed in the different types of ink, the different plates that were used, as well as how real colonial money should look. There is no substitute for getting an expert’s opinion, especially if you will be investing in colonial money.
