The Russian ruble collector is likely someone who doesn’t just love coins, but has an interest in Russia’s heritage as a country. One of the problems with purchasing rubles is that counterfeiting has always been a common thing with Russian coins. And not just to produce fake money to use, but rather to simply copy a design for novelty. If you find one of these “authentic forgeries” you’ll probably pay quite a high price, as they’re valuable today. But other counterfeits, like circulated coins, are worth nothing.

The Russian ruble is also represented with paper currency, which saw less counterfeiting than the coins. It wasn’t uncommon for the early rubles of the 15th century to be counterfeited by the people, as they were merely oddly shaped bars of silver and easily reproduced. When coins were minted with designs, forgery became more difficult for common people. But the wealthy often ordered coins reproduced for them to keep as collector items.

One way to spot these collector forgeries in a Russian ruble is to look at the edge. Often there will be markings on the edge that you won’t find on an authentic Russian coin. Because these forgeries weren’t created for the purpose of purchasing goods, but instead to be kept as collector items, they’re usually in excellent condition and are very valuable, though they have no worth as currency.

Another way to detect a forged Russian ruble is to learn a little about the history of Russia and her coinage. With a little bit of reading and research, you can spot which rubles are the most rare and unlikely to be found in large lots where people buy coins, either from collectors or in places like eBay online.

The rarest Russian ruble, for instance, is one that coin collectors might want to own, even though it’s virtually impossible. The silver Constantine is the rarest. Only a few are known to be in existence, and the last genuine Constantine was sold for the largest price ever earned by a single coin in auction.

The value of this coin springs from the fact that the Russian ruble was minted when it was believed that Constantine would take over power after Alexander’s death. But Constantine abdicated the throne, after some coins were already created. For collectors who like the history behind this particular coin and would like it represented in their collection, a reproduction can be found for an affordable price, just to have as a novelty.

A ruble can be a great piece for a coin collector or even someone who collects things representing Russia’s and the Soviet Union’s diverse history. Whether paper rubles or coins, the designs on both show some of the best Russian engraving art created. The ruble isn’t much of an investment for its currency value, as the value is low compared to other world currencies. But as a piece for a coin collector or someone interested in Russia’s history, a Russian ruble can be a valuable part of a collection.

As a link to the ancient world, coins are an incredibly popular way to capture this history. Thanks to the minting process and the metals that were used, we can still enjoy many ancient coins today. Greek coins are increasingly becoming more popular and their unique designs enhance any coin collection. For those that are looking to collect these coins, but are uncertain as to whether or not they are dealing with an authentic collectible, there are a few guidelines.

1. Check the Wear

An ancient coin will understandably look a bit old. In many cases, you are dealing with coins that were produced thousands of years ago. If the Greek coin you are looking at it is shiny, or has no visible signs of wear, there is a good chance that it is not authentic. Most collectors do not restore these coins since their wear is a sign of their true age. If you do find a coin that is in remarkable condition, there is a chance that it is authentic, but the chances are few and far between.

2. Check the Back

Ancient Greek coins will typically have a name engraved on the back, but it won’t be of a king or of anyone incredibly important. Instead, in this culture, it was customary for the person that actually minted the coin to put their own name on it. This was a unique practice and it offers a great way for the average collector to be able to authenticate a Greek coin. Since the vast majority of these coins bear some sort of engraving on the back, this will help you determine whether or not the coin is authentic.

3. Check the Design

Minting equipment was understandably not as advanced as today’s equipment and that means that very often, the designs on Greek coins will not be perfect. This is actually desirable and if you do find a coin that is too perfect, it is a major sign that it may not be authentic. Take the time to thoroughly examine the coin. If you cannot spot any flaws, there is a very good chance that it is not authentic.

4. Check the Certificate

Many ancient coins that have already been authenticated will have an accompanying certificate. While this can of course be forged, you can follow up with the person that did the appraisal and authentication. If you cannot contact them or they do not have any knowledge of the coin you are dealing with, it is best to save your money and find another Greek coin to buy.

5. Check the Shape

Last but not least, coins made during this period were quite often not perfectly round. Look for a slight deviation on your Greek coin. If it is slightly off, then this is a very good sign that it is authentic. Remember, many of these Greek coins were hand made, one at a time and whenever you are dealing with that kind of process, the chances for imperfections are very high.

Money -> Coins: World

Collecting world coins is a rewarding and fascinating hobby. The first official coins were struck around the 6th century BC in Lydia, though metals used as a type of currency far pre-dates that, to Mesopotamia somewhere between 1500 and 2000 BC. Ancient coinage is fascinating, with most avid collectors doing a great deal of research into the origin and history of each type of coin. Because the coins are ancient, most highly sought after specimens are rare enough to be difficult and even impossible to find.

While some still concentrate on collecting ancient coins, many choose to collect modern coinage. World coins minted in modern times are not only much more readily available to collectors than ancient coins, there’s also a much wider variety available. And while one might think that a truly ancient coin would be valuable, collectors have apparently decided that the most valuable coin in the world was minted as recently as 1933.

The 1933 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle, with a face value of $20, was sold at auction in 2002 for over 7 million dollars. Obviously such a coin is out of the reach of collectors, but it serves as an example of how collecting modern world coins can be an intriguing hobby. In the case of this coin, its history played a huge part in its value.

Over 450,000 1933 gold double eagle coins were minted, but none were ever issued because before the coins could be distributed, President Roosevelt changed laws in response to the Great Depression. Citizens were required to turn in any gold coins they had, and no more gold currency was to be created or issued. The gold double eagles were melted down and used to make gold bullion. Some, however, began turning up. Two were legally preserved, but occasionally others surfaced in small numbers, usually a few or 9 or 10 at a time. All that were discovered were confiscated by the Secret Service, but King Farouk of Egypt had already exported one. This coin is the one that sold for millions of dollars, making it the most valuable world coin ever created.

Some collectors choose one area to collect from while other world coin collectors aim to find one coin from every country or region of the world. Some collectors even choose to trace their ancestry through coins from those countries. The history of a coin, its scarcity, and whether or not there were errors during minting all figure into a coin’s value. It’s a good idea to read about world coins, to discover the interesting histories of some valuable coins, like that of the 1933 double eagle.

World coins are described in collector shops and auctions according to a standard grading system, from best to worst: mint, uncirculated, proof, extremely fine, very fine, fine, very good, good and about good. Look for these words in auction descriptions and carefully examine the scan or photo of a coin you wish to purchase to see the obvious wear.

Coins & Paper Money -> Coins: World -> Europe

Euro coins were first put into circulation in 2002 by the European Union. There are 8 coins: 1, 2 5, 10 and 20 cent coins, as well a the 100 and 200 cent coins, which equal 1 and 2 Euros, respectively. Because these aren’t just coins used as legal tender within one country but rather all of Europe, they have a common side that shows a map of Europe, and the other side of each Euro bears a design that represents the country of its origin.

Though Euro coins weren’t circulated until 2002, some were minted as early as 1999. Earlier versions of the 10, 20 and 50 cent pieces bore a map of Europe that made it appear all the countries were islands, as the borders between them were shown as actual breaks in the landmass. The 1 and 2 Euro coins showed Europe as a cohesive nation while still depicting borders between the countries. Each nation chooses its own reverse design, while the common side with its stars, bars and map of Europe remains the same throughout.

Euros coins are interesting for collectors because of this diversity. Some countries choose their national side to be the same on each coin like Belgium has, or each coin can bear a different design, like Italy’s. Belgian Euros actually draw a great deal on the nation’s previous coin designs while some countries like France use monuments and symbols with very stylized designs on their coins.

Additionally, there are certain rules the national designs must follow. The design must contain 12 stars, the year of issue and the engraver’s initials. The national side also can’t show the denomination of the coin because that’s on the common side, nor can it repeat the word Euro unless it’s written in another alphabet, like it is on the Greek coins.

The national side on Euro coins is also locked in until the end of 2008, with no changes allowed unless a monarch depicted on the coins dies or abdicates the throne. The Vatican coins were allows to change their national side when Pope John Paul II died in 1995. They issued a different coin while the throne was empty, then in 2006 they issued coins featuring the effigy of the new Pope, Pop Benedict XVI.

Commemorative coins are released regularly. In 2007 all countries that produce the Euro created a Treaty of Rome commemorative coin that was almost identical to that of every other country. Euro coins have also been designed to make it easy for blind or sight-impaired individuals to be able to distinguish between the coins. Each has a unique edge design that can be felt to identify the amount of currency, and the sizes go up with the value of the coin.

For coin collectors, Euro coins can be a fascinating part of their hobby with so many different coins featuring so many different designs. Online auctions like eBay are a popular place to acquire the coins, which are graded similarly to any collectible coins.

One of the different ways that people have been finding to be quite a lot of fun is to choose all of the different ways that you will be able to collect money. You can choose between paper and coin collecting whenever you choose to collect money. You will also be able to choose between the different currencies of the world. This includes all of the different kinds of world coin collecting that you will be able to enjoy.

In order to be able to enjoy world coin collecting, there are a few things that you will need to know about. Among the different things that you will need to know about is that you will need to know about the currencies for the different countries you want to collect from. You will also need to know something about the history of each kind of coins. Of course, you will also need to know the characteristics of the coins you are looking to collect. This will help you to be able to get everything that you will need so that you will be able to have the best collection you can have.

Learn about the Currency

The first thing that you will need to know about whenever you are looking to get started with world coin collecting is that you will need to know about the currency itself. This means that you will need to know about the different amounts that have been created as well as what these amounts are worth in terms of the items that they can buy. This is important to know in the current market as well as whenever the coin was first printed.

Learn about the History

Every coin has a history. When you are involved in world coin collecting, there is a lot of history that you will need to learn. This is the reason why so many of the people that get involved in it will stick to one country or another. It is simply too much to learn all of the history of all of the coins. You will be able to find out about the history whenever you are looking in places like online, in books or through the different collectors. This will help you to be able to pass along the history to those who buy from you as well as to understand the value of the coins better.

Learn about the Characteristics

There are many different characteristics that you will need to know about when involved with world coin collecting. To get everything that you will need, you will be able to draw on what you know about the history of the coin as well as the changes which have been made. This will help you to know whenever you will be able to get more for the different coins that you are trying to sell and buy.

Whether you’re new to coin collecting or you’ve been fascinated by coins for years, now is the time to invest in a John Quincy Adams dollar roll. If you have a free book offered by the US Mint to house your Presidential Dollars collection, you’ll want at least one loose John Quincy Adams dollar, but the roll is more of an investment in the coins. If you purchase a roll of each Presidential dollar released from the beginning of the program through the end in 2016 (though more presidents will be added, extending the program) you’ll have an amazing variety of dollar rolls that will look impressive in any sized collection.

The John Quincy Adams dollar roll is the latest offering in the Presidential Dollars program. Much like the 10-year 50 States Quarters Program that proved a favorite among collectors, and especially children who enjoyed collecting these coins, dollars featuring United States Presidents are released over a span of time. The 50 States Quarters were released in the order the states became part of the union; the Presidential Dollars are released in the order in which they served the country as Commander in Chief.

Coins in a John Quincy Adam dollar roll, and in all of the Presidential Dollars, are the same composition as a Sacagawea Golden Dollar. But each coin features the name and likeness of the President on the front, along with the years of his term of office, and which President he was—1st, 2nd, etc. Presidential Dollars are unique from any other US coin in the way much of the information typically found on a coin is printed on their edges instead of the face or reverse. “E Pluribus Unum,” “In God We Trust,” the mint mark and the year of the coin are now on the edge of these coins.

Also setting coins in a John Quincy Adams dollar roll and other Presidential Dollars apart from every other coin minted in the United States, the world Liberty does not appear on the reverse of the coin. An image of the Statue of Liberty stands for liberty, instead. The coins have been issued at a rate of 4 per year since 2007.

The John Quincy Adams dollar roll became available this year, in May of 2008, and is the 6th release of these dramatic and beautiful coins. George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Presidential Dollars were released in 2007, and James Monroe was the first release of 2008, followed by John Quincy Adams. Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren Dollars have also been released since then this year, with the four scheduled to be released in 2009 being the next 4 Presidents in order, Harrison, Tyler, Poke and finally Taylor. These coins are great to teach kids about our Presidents.

Your local bank should be able to supply you with a John Quincy Adams dollar roll, but auctions like eBay are great for quickly grabbing rolls of past releases. Keep the roll intact to retain all of its collector value.

You purchase coins at a good rate, hold on to them for a while and then sell them for a huge return. The problem is that it does not always work out this way. As coin collectors start to make more money, they start to branch out. They start investing in things like foreign coin collecting and wind up losing a lot of money in the process. This does not have to be the way. There are ways which you can avoid losing your money.

The biggest problem most people have when investing in foreign coin collecting is that they have no idea what they are doing. Collecting coins which you know nothing about is a dangerous endeavor. This is why you need to learn some history about the coins. You also need to learn some history about the country where the coins originated from. It is also a good idea to be able to spot fakes. As long as you stick to these suggestions you will have a pretty good chance of being able to keep your shirt and even making some money.

Learning about the Coins

The first thing you should know when you are looking into investing in foreign coin collecting is about the coins themselves. This will allow you to find out which years are more valuable than others. In the history of many coins there is normally one years in which less of the coins were created or more were reclaimed by the government or something else happened to make the Mint year so extraordinary. If you know these things you will be able to make better decisions about the coins that you buy.

Learning about the Country of Origin

Often when investing in foreign coin collecting you will need to look at the country from which the coins originated. The coins worth the most come from countries which no longer exist. Take a look at the history of the country as well as the state of the Union. You may be able to discover countries which are about to fold. Finding unique coins from these countries before they fold will turn a nice profit down the road.

Learn to Spot counterfeits

One of the biggest pitfalls which people fall into with foreign coin collecting is purchasing counterfeits. These coins can often be just as old as the original coin. This is especially true of coins which were made valuable centuries ago. In some cases the counterfeits can become valuable, but in most cases you will end up buying something which looks genuine only to lose a lot of money. There are features you can look for which will point to a coin being a fake. Pay attention to these characteristics so that you can make sure that you are getting a genuine coin and not something which was created to fool you.

The first period of time for the history of ancient Greek coins is known as the Archaic period. This particular period of time expands from when coinage first appeared in the Greek World in 600 BCE until 480 BE which was when the Persian wars erupted. After this, the next period of time that existed was the Classical period for Greek coins, and this period endured until Alexander the Great appeared in 330 BC.

The third period is the Hellenistic period, which drew out until the Romans preoccupied the Greek world in the 1st century BCE. The Greek cities extended in order to create their own coins for additional cities under the rule of Rome. These coins were each completely handmade, and they depicted a wide variety of different scenes, buildings, figureheads and symbols.

All of the Ancient Greek coins were created by hand unlike how modern day coins are made. Ancient Greek coins were eventually invented in a kingdom known as Lydia, which is now known as Turkey, during 620 BCE. When the Ancient Greeks began to create Greek coins from the very start, these coins had a number of different figures, inscriptions and symbols that were specifically designed to exemplify the independence of the poleis.

Even though the Greeks were under the command of Hellenistic kings or autocrats, the Greeks were always generally independent in nature. Their coins were a great way for them to substantiate their independence throughout their history. In other words, Ancient Greek coins are a symbol of independence among a people that struggled with independence for many centuries. Ancient Greek coins are made up of historic pictures and symbols and are now perceived as being artistic, lending to the history of a true art. The examples of the oldest Greek coins are capable of including a lot of sanctified temples and buildings, and this permits individuals to understand how grand those buildings once were in Greek history and lore.

Greek coins, then, were a lot more than a simple system of commerce or a collection of carved or stamped metal. The purpose of Greek coins had so much more to do with independence and religious pride, meaning that they are extremely meaningful as history of art, and the history of a people that struggled for independence and flourished for many years despite being under the rule of others, including Hellenistic kings and the Romans. If you are looking for a type of collection that you can be proud to have in your possession, consider collecting Greek coins so that you can learn the history of a unique people and revel in the signs and symbols of their fight for independence. The more you learn about Greek coins, the better you will be able to benefit from collecting these unique coins.

Start with your pocket change

Start out by studying coins you pull from your pockets, or failing that, some old coins from your attic, on your floor, or out in public. As a novice coin collector, it makes no sense to spend a lot of your money on coins if you do not understand their nuances thoroughly. Spend a good bit of time getting acquainted with the more ordinary coins. Familiarize yourself with the designs and letterings and images, their types and styles.

Choose the coin types you want to collect

To make the hobby of coin collecting more interesting, choose coins of a type that you have a real interest in. Bullion coins made of gold or silver as an example can attract collecting investors due to the market worth and appeal of Bullion.

Very old coins such as Roman coins, Byzantine coins and Celtic coins are capable of being quite interesting when it comes to collectors that are interested in collecting not only coins of the world, but also coins that come from history and from long forgotten ancient civilizations. There are a wide variety of different types of coins that are available in this market. What this means is that all that you really have to do is to perform a little bit of searching in order to determine what it is that you really want as a coin collector and enthusiast.

Organize your collection and maintain your coins of the world

If you are simply gathering your coins in a haphazard way, then you are not really collecting coins, but rather you are simply hoarding them. Without taking the time to organize your coin collection, you could actually end up missing out on some truly valuable additions to your collection.

You are going to want to purchase either coin collecting software, or a coin catalog that will allow you to arrange all of your coins of the world in a logical fashion. Software programs are designed to help you keep your coins in order using up to date database listings where you can search by mint mark, date, type, denomination, year and other details of the coins that you are collecting.

You are also going to want to buy all of the necessary supplies for collecting coins of the world, as well as for storing and displaying them. This is going to include coin albums, coin display cases, slab coin holders, envelopes, coin tubes and boxes. All of these supplies have unique purposes and uses, so make sure that you are choosing the ones that are going to help you the most when it comes to organizing and storing and displaying your unique coin collection.
