There is something very special about rare coins. No matter where in the world they came from, they usually have a very rich history and collectors will search to the ends of the earth to find that special rare coin that will complete their collection. Many of these coins will go at a premium price at auction, worth far more than they ever were when they were in circulation. Let’s look at a few of the different types of rare coins.

First up, you have rare coins from ancient civilizations. Whether it was an early coin from Mesopotamia, a Grecian coin or a Roman coin, these are usually the most valuable. However, they are also the ones that may be copied. If you see a lot of coins and the seller claims that they are all authentic, but the price seems too low, you may want to rethink your purchase. Truly ancient rare coins are typically very expensive. It is all too easy nowadays to replicate these coins and mass produce them.

Next, look for coins that are oddly shaped or made from rare materials. This shows that they were handmade and are typically older in origin. These are not very easy to find, but Greek coins are the perfect example of this. These rare coins were handmade and will frequently be just a little off of perfect. Some may even include the maker’s signature or mark, and these are very valuable indeed.

Other rare coins that are fun to collect coincide with specific eras in history. For example, many collectors look for coins produced during the French Revolution. Collecting old streets signs is a hobby for many people. If you choose to deal in old street signs, there are some collection tips and tricks that you’ll want to follow.

Avoid collecting modern/current street signs. Collecting them is a crime, as is selling them, so stay away from teens offering you the latest I-15 highway sign. Chances are they’re vandals trying to profit from their misdeeds.

It may be a good idea to decide on a group of old street signs you’ll be working with. For example, you may want to collect a certain type of signs.

Garages are a popular place to display old street signs. Be sure there is an area that is away from tools or cars so that the signs won’t be damaged by a stray rake or the back fender.

Cleaning or not cleaning old street signs is another decision you’ll make as a collector or dealer. Some collectors like their signs to look bright and new, while others want a little dirt or grease as a way to preserve the nostalgia.

If you decide that cleaning is the way you want to go, then be sure to use a soft cloth, very gentle cleanser, and a hose with low pressure.

Develop a relationship with all the departments of transportation and the traffic control authorities in the area. They generally have the responsibility for all road signs, and may have retained some old street signs as they replaced them.  It’s possible that they are not aware of the value of such signs, and may sell them to you for a low price.

Other places to search are antique shops and flea markets. Sellers at the flea markets who specialize in old street signs will likely charge more for their items, since they are aware that they have a good selection of what collectors want.

However, if that’s how to get old street signs that complete the collection or will make you buyers happy, then it may be the ideal way to expand or begin a collection.

Royal Doulton figurines are an incredibly popular collectible and once you see how intricate the designs are, it is easy to see why. These precious statues are manufactured by the Royal Doulton Company from England and there is quite a lot of history behind them. The company has survived through many World Wars and many of the figurines that were produced during those periods of upheaval are the most popular of all.

The first figurines produced by the company debuted between 1912 and 1913. The very first one ever made was in honor of Queen Mary and carries the number HN1. The HN refers to the designer, Harry Nixon, who handpainted these Royal Doulton figurines. The vast majority if these figurines will carry his initials and that is a great way to tell if you are dealing with an authentic piece.

Between the years of 1928 to 1954, the company developed a new system to provide collectors with more information about the Royal Doulton figurines they were collecting. A small crown and a number appeared on items manufactured during this time. The numbers could be added to the year 1927 to determine exactly when that figurine was made.

By far, the most collectible Royal Doulton figurines were the ones that were made prior to 1939. You can easily tell if you have one of these rare finds due to the fact that the word “potted” will appear on the bottom of the figurine. This refers to the process of making the figurines. In addition, it easy to tell which figurines were produced after 1920, since a small lion will appear on these items.

There are several different highly collectible Royal Doulton figurines that are available at this time. They include the Bunnykins line, which was made during World War 2. Only six figurine types were produced during that time period and although production resumed after the war, the Bunnykins line remained incredibly popular. Newer models are available today, but collectors seek the ones that were made before 1945.

You can also find special editions of Royal Doulton figurines that are also highly collectible. These include models that are after specific historical figures, such as Queen Mary, or after fairy tale characters, such as Cinderella. When it comes to deciding which pieces you should collect, you can go for these first, but at the end of the day, it should come down to your personal preference.

Most Royal Doulton figurines are quite valuable, so as long as you are certain they are authentic, you really can’t go wrong collecting them. They have expanded their line to include animals and many other different types of figurines that are incredibly popular. Look for the most collectible ones first, but don’t let the others pass you by. In a few years, they may also be just as rare as the ones made before 1950.

Royal Doulton figures are especially fun to collect with children and offer a great way to start a child on a life of antiquing.

Although the first thing that springs to mind in many people when the term French antiques is mentioned is Louis XVI furniture, there are numerous antiquities from this region that are incredibly valuable. Many of these priceless French antiques are stored at the Louvre, or in other museums across the world. However, there are many private collectors that are quietly building up massive collections of these priceless items. If you are interested in history, or you are just looking for a unique collectible that is unlike any other, you may want to think about investing in one of these antiquities.

French antiques from this time period are not easy to find however, and it may take some time to build up your collection. The best place to start is by looking at high end auction houses to see if they are going to include any of these items in an upcoming auction. These are the places that the high end collectors will go when they need to sell off an item, or reduce the size of their collection.

In many cases, shopping at one of these auctions will give you access to world class French antiques that cannot be purchased anywhere else. The next time you see one of these auctions advertised, take the time to look through the catalog. You never know what incredible finds you may come across.

There is always controversy over private collectors having access to French antiques from this time period, but without their efforts, many of these items would have been lost to natural disasters or wars. No matter what side of the issue you belong on, everyone can agree that there is a market for antiquities from this time period. You can decide to loan yours out to a museum after finding it, or keep it for yourself, but you will get the rare change to own a real piece of ancient history and hold it right in your hand.

When it comes to collecting stamps that were produced during the second world war, many collectors gravitate towards what are known as “Third Reich Stamps.” These are stamps that were produced in Germany from a period between 1933 and 1945, when the Third Reich was in power in that country. To determine whether or not you have an authentic Third Reich stamp on your hands, there are a few things that you should pay attention to.

1. The Colors

Most Third Reich stamps are either green, red or brown. The backgrounds of the stamps will have the most color, while the designs are usually white or simply not colored at all. This creates a contrast effect and provides a backdrop for the artwork that is used. Many other countries used the opposite effect, where the background of the stamp was pale in color and the designs featured color, but Third Reich Stamps are usually different.

2. The Designs

This is where there is a lot of variation. Some Third Reich stamps will feature Hitler or prominent people from the Third Reich, while others will have sometimes strange designs that depict Egyptian figures. Other designs from this time period also feature soldiers, and as the country deteriorated into war, symbols such as the swastika were used in greater numbers. 3. The Commemoration

Many Third Reich Stamps were issued in commemoration of certain events and these are probably the most popular. They will typically contain the anniversary of a date that was important to leaders within the Third Reich, or of specific victories. These are typically the kinds of stamps that are collected by those that have a specific interest in the war with Germany during this time.

If you find a Third Reich stamp and you are wondering whether or not it is legitimate, pay attention to the colors that were used and rely on the above tips to help you determine whether or not it is authentic. Always look for stamps that are in good condition, have never been used, or still contain the original adhesive. These are the most valuable, in addition to the ones with specific dates.

You may also want to get an appraisal or have an expert examine a Third Reich stamp before you buy it. There are counterfeit stamps running around, and you may end up wasting your money if you are not careful and go through the authentication process. When it comes to finding stamps of great value, US postage stamps are usually the most popular. In fact, many of these stamps may be worth more than $100k, and frequently will go well above that. When you are shopping for collectible US postage stamps, it helps to know what to look for so that you can make a good purchase. Here are some signs that you have a winner on your hands.

1. The gum is still intact.

For stamps made after the last part of the 19th century, there should be gum attached to the back. Adhesives were introduced in US postage stamps during this time period and if you can find one that still has the original gum, that is quite a feat indeed. This can make a difference of several thousand dollars in terms of overall value.

2. The stamp was never used.

While some highly collectible US postage stamps may still have value if they are used, you should always look for stamps that are still in their original books, or were never actually used. If you can find uncirculated US postage stamps, they are worth even more money.

3. The overall condition is very good.

Used or not, the US postage stamp you are trying to collect should be in the best possible condition. Stay away from stamps that are torn, missing pieces or in general bad condition. It is better to have a postmark on one than it is to have half a stamp. Always try to buy the stamps that are in the best condition first since they will generally be worth much more money.

4. The hinge is still intact.

The small piece of paper that was used to connect US postage stamps together is known as a hinge. If you can find a stamp that still has its hinge, it is generally worth more money than those that don’t. However, the hinge should be firmly attached and not hanging lose. If that occurs, the value will go down.

5. The historical figure depicted on the stamp.

This can be a big determiner in the overall value of a US postage stamp. For example, stamps depicting famous presidents such as Abraham Lincoln are generally more valuable. The same is true for famous founding fathers, like Benjamin Franklin, or even present day celebrities.

6. The stamp has a mistake.

This is actually a good thing, as long as it occurred when the stamp was manufactured. Error stamps are actually worth quite a bit of money and many collectors will limit their collections to only these odd creations. If you find a stamp that just looks a little wrong, do a little research on it. It may be a very valuable US postage stamp.

Whenever you are collecting US postage stamps, the overall condition should be your guide. While damaged stamps may be cheaper to collect, they just don’t have the same value as those that are in perfect shape.

The history of Depression Glass is actually quite fascinating and it is a true testimony to its appeal that decades later it is still in high demand. These colorful glass items were made to be cheap, they had to be in order to sell them during this time period. If you are not familiar with Depression Glass, here is a brief guide to help you spot these rare treasures.

First, Depression Glass is quite heavy and although it was considered to be cheap glass, these items were made to last. They became popular following the market crash of 1929, when the United States was in the throes of the Great Depression. During this time period fortunes were lost and many families found themselves on the brink of financial ruin.

At this point, many people could not afford to purchase the niceties of life and it was a struggle just to get the things that they needed. In order to be able to continue selling products, many companies began developing cheap glassware, which would later be known as Depression Glass. These glass items were made out of the cheapest glass possible and the molds that were used were often imperfect.

However, these imperfections are now considered to be desirable. Since costs were kept extremely low during the manufacturing process, the vast majority of Depression Glass does not have a maker’s mark and generally there are no identifying marks whatsoever. The pieces are characterized by their heavy weight and the interesting but simple patterns that are featured on them.

Another characteristic of Depression Glass is that the pieces were generally made to be very colorful. You can find virtually every color in the rainbow, from blue, to yellow, red, green and even purple. These colors were vibrant and happy and reminded people of better times. In fact, many items made during this time period reflect the overall mood of the country and the grasping of small things like something colorful to keep hope alive.

Today, Depression Glass is extremely popular. It is rare to find a full set, but most collectors try to accumulate as many pieces in one color as they can. You can frequently find Depression Glass at local flea markets, at auction or online. However, it is important to make sure that you are getting authentic glass.

Remember, the piece should be slightly imperfect, there should be no insignia on the glass and the colors should be a bit faded due to age. If you find Depression Glass that is overly vibrant, very well made or carries an insignia of the manufacturer, there is a high probability that the piece may not be authentic.

Collecting Depression Glass is a great way to commemorate this troubled time in the history of the United States where little things like happy colors on glassware helped the populace through those dark days.
