The Harley Davidson motorcycle has become an integral part of Americana and the pop culture of this country. Once the favorite bike of outlaws and renegades, Harley Davidson collectibles have gone mainstream and they are more popular than ever. There are literally hundreds of different Harley Davidson collectibles out there, and sometimes it can be hard to know where the real value is. Here’s an easy guide to finding the best Harley Davidson collectibles.

Motorcycles

By far, the most valuable and sought after Harley Davidson collectible is the motorcycle that bears its name. Whether it’s a chopper, or a regular edition bike, collectors can’t get enough of them and many of these bikes will sell for six figures at auction or at private sales. The older the bike the better, and it’s always nice to find one in good condition. However, some of the fun comes from restoration, so don’t miss a great opportunity if you come across a bike that needs a little repair.

Lighters and Pocket Knives

The next most popular and sometimes valuable Harley Davidson collectible are pocket knives and lighters. For lighters, look for a classic Zippo with the Harley logo, while simple pocket knives that have just the logo are also popular. There are hundreds of different designs and many private collectors will end up with dozens of these in their collections. These can be found at flea markets, garage sales and at online auctions. This is a great entry level collectible.

Die Cast Models

If you can’t get the real thing, a die cast model Harley Davidson collectible is the next best thing. These are intricate, scaled down models of the popular bikes and many of them will be hand painted and have moving parts. If you find one of these models that is still in its original packing, you’ll have found quite a deal. These are popular items at flea markets as well, and many can bring a pretty penny at auction.

Apparel

The next few Harley Davidson collectibles fall under memorabilia, and even though they may not have the same value as a 1969 Hog, they are still sought after by fans of the bike and collectors. One look at the streets of Sturgis can tell you just how many people buy and wear this apparel. Some of the older designs will have value, especially if the apparel is in good condition, but generally, this is more of a novelty item.

General Harley Davidson Collectibles

These cover a wide range of products, from salt shakers, to socks, to temporary tattoos and everything in between. You’d be surprised at just how many Harley Davidson collectibles there are out there and while these may only have emotional value, they are still a lot of fun to collect. Dolls-and-Bears -> Bears -> Boyds

Boyds Bears are the creation of Gary Lowenthal and his wife, Justina Unger. Before they were married, they owned an antique shop together in 1979, and found that they couldn’t afford the types of antiques they wanted to carry. So in 1982 they started making and selling antique reproductions, beginning with their line of duck decoys. They began making miniature reproduction houses out of resin which they called Gnomes Homes. Business was good—they even sold wholesale to other retailers.

Then in 1984, they designed a 12” jointed bear, inspired by a line of Merino wool bears from China, and named it Matthew after their infant son. Boyds Bears were born. In 1993, they began making resign bear statues, as well as other items. Their catalogue of products is large with a variety of different things to choose from. But the soft bears are still one of their most popular items, with collectors clamoring to get them all.

Many of their products, including Boyds Bears, have won doll and toy industry awards, and their line is highly popular with teddy bear collectors. The bears can be found in chain and independent stores like Hallmark and other shops, and through many online stores, as well as eBay. They have a party plan that allows a party hostess to earn free merchandise by hosting a bear party to sell the plush bears, as well as a collector and fan club called the Loyal Order of Friends of Boyds, whose fee entitles you to special members-only versions of some items, as well as other perks.

As with most collector lines like Boyds Bears, the older and retired bears are more valuable and more difficult to find. When a bear is retired that means it’s no longer being manufactured, so the number is limited to how many have already been produced. These are hot items for collectors, so if you’re looking for a retired bear, you might have a lot of searching to do before you’re lucky enough to find it at a price you find acceptable.

Unless you just want every one of the Boyds Bears you can possibly find (and some people do!) then it’s best if you narrow down your idea of what your collection should be about. Just Christmas bears alone in both plush and resin could have you happily searching for new items for quite some time, but the other holidays are well-represented, too. You can choose ornaments, bears wearing different hats, bears made to represent the seasons, Boyds Bears themed Victorian or country, or almost any other kind of classification you can think of.

Ceramic piggy banks have an interesting history. Why pigs, exactly, and not bank shapes or a tiny safe? Apparently, we use pigs because of language, and a simple mistake. The word “pygg” was an old English word for an orange clay commonly used to make jars, pots, dishes, and almost anything we use ceramic for today. Extra coins in a household were commonly dropped into a jar made from pygg. Language evolved over the next few hundreds years, and in the early 19th century when some English potters were asked to make pygg banks, they made banks shaped like pigs. They were a hit with customers, and the piggy bank was born—or so the most widely believed explanation says.

One other version of the origin of the ceramic piggy bank claims that a young boy in the early 20th century wanted to raise money to help lepers. He sold his pet pig and donated the money from the sale to help leprosy victims. His generosity caused people to call it the Pig Bank Movement, thus staring the name piggy bank. A church in Kansas bears a plaque commemorating the boy and his generosity, and the piggy bank in general.

Who hasn’t had a piggy bank at some point in his or her life? Ceramic piggy banks are popular items today, and are often given to children at birth or as a first birthday gift, as an heirloom and to foster the good habit of saving money for a rainy day. Silver-plated banks are often engraved with the child’s name and date of birth or some other milestone date when given as gifts. And often tradition has the gift-giver putting the first coin into the bank before giving it as a seed for future wealth.

The value of collectible ceramic piggy banks hinges on a number of things like the age, the condition, and the significance of the design or the bank itself (did it belong so someone noteworthy, or was it created by someone famous, for instance.) What kind of piggy bank you purchases depends on whether or not you’re interested in it as a collectible, or if it’s simply because you love the design.

Vintage ceramic piggy banks can be called vintage simply because they’re not in a currently popular style. Be sure it’s not just labeled as vintage, but collectible as well, if you’re looking for an investment piece to add value to your collection. The uniqueness of the bank, and the quality and condition all figure into the price and the value.

Very old ceramic piggy banks will often have cracks, chips or crackling. If you can find a very old bank intact, you’ve probably found a nice collector piece. Just be sure to ask the seller, whether online or in person, if repairs have been made, if any chips have been glued, or if any type of re-glazing has been done to the bank. You’ll want one as close to its original condition as possible.

LPGA photos are a hot collectible item for a variety of collectors, from golf buffs to those who admire the strides women have made in what used to be typically men’s arenas. The LPGA or Ladies Professional Golf Association was only founded in 1950 by 13 women to be the official American organization for women professional golfers. They run the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour, which is a series of weekly tournaments exclusively for professional female golfers around the world, from February to December each year.

It’s no wonder LPGA photos are becoming increasingly popular as collectibles, considering that the sports has gotten much more attention in recent years, and this year, 2008, prize money for winning golfers has been more than $58 million dollars.

Other countries have their own versions of the United States’ Ladies Professional Golf Association, but the US LPGA is the largest and most well-known of them all. It’s the oldest female professional sporting association in the country. LPGA photos are popular collectibles just based on that distinction alone.

But to celebrate the sport of golf, LPGA photos are popular with fans, especially when the photos are autographed in person by the golfers. While not all of us are lucky enough to meet our sports heroes and idols in person, many people each year have the thrill of meeting their favorite female golfers and having photographs signed. The rest of us have to purchase signed photographs from autograph dealers in stores and online.

LPGA photos are popular items in online auctions and among online autograph dealers. Unfortunately, it’s easy to fall victim to a less than scrupulous person who might be passing off autographed photos that have never even come near the person who supposedly signed them. This is a large problem online among all autograph dealers, especially those who sell the most expensive and highly sought after autographs of celebrities and sports stars. Autographed photos and items, particularly those that were allegedly autographs by stars and legends who have died, command hundreds and thousands of dollars, or more, so it’s easy to see why some less than ethical people will try to sell unauthentic autographs.

When purchasing LPGA photos, be sure that first of all it’s an actual photo and not something printed on a laser or ink jet printer. Ask. At least you have it in writing that it’s not, should you ever need to try for a refund. Autographs are also commonly printed right into the picture. These are known as pre-prints, and while some fans still enjoy them because they’re inexpensive and more likely to contain an authentic autograph, at least know whether you’re buying a pre-print or a one-time original signature.

For those that claim the signatures are original, compare them to pre-prints for similarities, and search for the autograph in other places online. If the signature is exactly the same, you should be just as wary as if it’s wildly different because no one signs exactly the same each time.
